whose'memory the foregoing tribute is
devoted.
We knew him from the time that he
had scarcely attained tho fourth’ year of
his age, and, oven then, recognized in
him genius of the most extraordinary
character. Ho was, indeed, an intel
lectual prodigy. In conversing with
him, wbon under ten years of age, one
was reminded of all that liss been said of
Safford, the boy Mathematician sad As
tronomer, though tbs superior talent, of
“little Frank” lay not in that line.
Ho was aa observer of man and things,
and, at luelee, evinced an iusight into
character almost intuitive, aud a matu
rity, II well sa correctness, of judgment
upon publio affairs, equaled by but few of
the ablest aron of the land. Being severely

But, to her in this most afflictive be-

Had Frank lived, like another Prentias,
he might, and moat probably would have
attained a high position among the most

Tlie Condition of the South
Baye President Grant, “is unhappily,
not such oi all true, patriotic citizens
would like to see.” Hxoctiy so. Aud
who is responsible ? Nobody but Grant
aud Congress, who have oaused this state
of tilings by their “disabilities” and ty
rannical legislation. He accuses the
Southern people of eucouraging “social
ostracism for opinion's sake, personal
violence or threats towards persons enter
taining political views opposed to those
eutertained by the majority of the old
citizens." What sublime impudenoe to
Bpeak thus of tho Southern people, who
are to this day the victims of political
“ostracism for opinion’ssake," subject to
“personal violence or threats,” from gov
ernment officials "entertaining political
views opposed to those entertainod by
by the majority of the old citizens. What
a multitude of camels this Northern mes
sage deliverer swallows, while straining at
Southern gnats! It ie horriblef or the Bon th
em people to measure out to other* as it is
measured to them. Had there been a
general amnesty at the close of the war,
as originally agreed upon, there would
have been as much harmony at the
South to-day os at the North. But a
cowardly and truculent Northern Con
gress was afraid of the nnoonquered mind
of tho Southern people. They dared not
go into a conflict of argument, so they
politically grgged and bonnd their ad
versaries, and have kept them in chains
to this day. Remove this political bon
dage and the Ku-Klux will expire for lock
of food. Just look *t this twaddle:
“It will be * happy ooudition of the
oountry when the-uld citizens of these
States will toko on interest in public af
fairs, promulgate idea* honeatly enter
tained, vote for men representing their
views, and permit the arme freedom of
expression and ballot in those entertain
ing different political convictions.”
What chanoe have they to "vote for
men entertaining their views ?" Are not
their elections invariably set slide t Ev
erybody knows that no man entertaining
Southern opinions would bo admitted to
Congress. —-Pontiac, Michigan, Jack-
