COL. BEVERLY A. THORNTON,
FOR SENATOR.
Editor Enquiv< r: As it is now evident tha^
tiie Convention will not change tho present
Senatorial District, and us tho action of the
next Legislature will be very important and
need our best men in that body, I would re
spectfully suggest Col. U. A. Tuorntux for our
next Senator. 1 know Col. Thornton well, and
consider him one of the most intellectual men
of his ago in the State, When in tho Logisla*
ture from Muscogee county, eight or ten years
ago, although then young ho took a very prom
inent staud. and it was then thought that no
young member could cam pete with him. By
ordinary rule, Chattahoochee county is now
entitled to tho Senator, and as Mr. Thornton is
living in Chattahooo .co county, I trust that
thero will be no opposition to him.

For Congress,—2d Dislricl.
Lumpkin, Ua., Oct. 28, 1865.
To tli*- Votira of the 2d Cungrcttiionul District:
In view of tho present condition of our coun
try, the result of tho lato revolution rondoring
our promiuent friends ineligible to a sent in
Congress lor tho present, L have been induced
by friends from different parts of the District to
become a candidate.
If I am your choice I will support the resto
ration policy of President Johnson, looking to
a complete return of tho Southern States to
their former status in tho Union. Tho only
hope for peace, happiness and prosperity is in a
free aud ehccrt'ul support of tho union of tho
States upon constitutional limitations.
Thero is sorrow at the grave of a first born,
anguish in tho house that weeps a parent dead,
I remember the touching lamentation of that
ardent and impassioned nature. Edmund Burke,
when he mourned an only son, the heir of his
house and his nauio. You hnvo Jill heard the
wail of tho King of Israel at the death of a
rebel son, but no such sorrow is ever felt for tho
soldier slain in battle or fur kindred gone down
to tho grave, as the exile feels looking for tho
time upon his native homo, or tho patriot when
ho sees the soil of his country crimsoned with
fraternal blood, May our eyes never weep
thoso tears again. Your country hangs weep
ing on your neck and beseeches you by the
memories of tile past and the hopes of the fu
ture. to stay reproach aud crimination and
send healing waters along all the channels of
social and;Politic»l lito.
