My Native Laud.
Before all lands in East or West,
1 love my native laud the best—
With God’s best gifts ’tis teeming;
Nor gold nor jewels there are found.
Yet men of noble souls abound,
And eyos of joy are gleaming.
Beforo all tongues, in East or West,
I love my native tongue tho best;
Though not so smoothly spoken.
Not woven with Italian art.
Yet when it speaks from heart to heart,
Its word is never broken.
Before all people, East or West,
I lovo Virginians the best;
A race of noble spirits—
A sober mind, a generous heart,
To virtuo trained, yet free from art.
They from their sires inherit.
To all the world I give my hand.
My heart I give my native land;
I seek hor good, her glory:
I honor evory nation’s name,
Kespect their fortune and their fame.
But I lore the land that bore me.
A ViROiiruK.
Rather Hough Honey moon.
On lust Friday morning: an athletic
young: farmer, in tho town of Waynos-
t>ur£, took a fair girl, ‘all bathodin blush
es,’ from hor paronts, and started for the
first town across tbe Pennsylvania line, to
bo married, where the ceremony could bo
performed without a license. The happy
pair were accompanied by a sister of tbe
girl, a tall, gaunt, sharp-featured female
of some thirty-seven summeis. The pair
crossed the line, were married, and re
turned to Woilsville to pass tho night.
People at tho hotel whore the wedding
party stopped, observed that they con
ducted themselves in a rathor singular
manner. The husband would take his sis
ter-in-law, the tall female aforesaid, into
one corner of the parlor, nnd talk earneot-
lv to her, gesticulating wildly all the time.
Then the tall female would ‘put her foot
down’ and talk to him in an angry and
excited manner. Then the husband would
take his fair young bride into a cornor ;
but he would no sooner commence talking
to her than the gnunt sister would rush in
between them and angrily join in the con
versation. Tho people at tbe hotel ascer
tained what this meant about nine o’cleck
that evening. There was an uproar in the
room which had been assigned to tho now-
ly-married couplo. Tomato shrieks and
masculine ‘swears” startled the people in
tho hotel, and they rushed to the spot.
Tho guunt female was pressing against tho
door of the room, and the newly-married
man, mostly undressed, was barring her
out with all his might. Occasionally she
would kick tho door far enough open to
disclose the stalwart husband, in bis Gen
tleman Greek Slave apparel.
It appears that the tall female insisted
upon occupying the same bed with tho
nowlyrinarriod pair; that her sister was
favorably disposed to tho arrangement,
and that the husband had agreed to it be
fore tho wedding took place, and now in
dignantly repudiated the contract. ‘Won’t
you go away now, Susan V 6«id the newly*
married man, softening his voice.
‘No,’ said she, ‘I won’t—so there!’
‘Don’t you budge an inch!’ cried tho
married sistor, within the room.
‘Now—now, Mnria,' said tho young
man to his wife 4 in a piteous tone, ‘don’t
go to cuttin’ up in this way ; now dou’t.’
‘I’ll cut up’s much as 1 wanterl’ she
sharply replied.
‘Well,’ roared tho desperate man,
throwing the door wide open and stalking
out among tho crowd, ‘jest you two wim-
min put on your duds and go right
strnight home and bring back the old man
and woman, and your grandfather, who is
nigh on to a hundred; bring'em all here,
and 2'll marry the whole caboodle of 'em,
and toe'll all sleep together /'
Tho dilliculty was finally adjusted by
tho tall lemale taking a room. Wells-
ville is onjoying itself over the sensattion.

A PiiRicKor.oai8T on Soldiers.— Some
enthusiastic believer in phrenology has
been pursuing his investigations even
amid tho mournful relict of the battle-
Hold. Ho furnishes his conclusions in the
following lottor to the Philadelphia Jour
nal:
1 lately took a ramble through the bat*
tie fields near Spotsylvania Courthouse,
where Generals Grant and Lee. and their
vast armies, had tho memorable engage
ment in May, 18G1; and knowing that you
highly value facts that may benefit tbe
science of which you are one of the lead
ers, I will givo you the substance of somo
observations I made on the skulls of
Northern and Southorn soldiers who wore
killed in battle.
Tho skulls of tho Southern soldiers have
a greater development of the organs of
Comparison, Destructiveness, Benevo
lence, Spirituality, Self-osteera, Friend
ship and Parental Love than those of
Northern soldiers; whilo the skulls of the
men of tho Norlh have more of the fac
ulties of Individuality, Cuusality, Human
Nature, Constructivenesu, Conscientious-
nees, Firmness, Approbativeness, Inhabi-
tivenoss and Combativeness than those of
tho South. Now, these are facta, and
hold good in the case of a majority of
skulls which I examined; hut whether
they will bear tho test of standing side by
side with examinations made heretofore,
I am unuble to say.
Thk Yatiit Wandkrkr.—This noted
craft, sold by tbo Government several
months since to purtics in Rockland, Me.,
is now on tbe marine railway there, being
rebuilt throughout. The purchaser of the
vessel, o/i opening hor, found her rotten,
and she is to bo entirely reframod and re
settled; only tho original outside planks
and a few timbers will lemaio in her. The
parties paid the Government $0,000 for
hor, and those who have examined her
say it will cost $7,000 to repair her. She
will cost her purchasers more than a new
vessel of tbo sAtne tonnago, but they will
save her beautiful model.
