KaimltvcrHan,
There wan once an honest German
who wanted to see a little of the northern
world, and bo loft his little village Tot-
tlingen, and set out on foot for Amster
dam, the great and rich capital of Hoi- |
land. He knew not a word of Dutch, |
and quite forgot that the people do not
apeak Germau, hut quite a different lan
guage. When he arrived at Amsterdam
ho wandered through the fine street* in
amazement at the rare sights. He had
never seen such splendid things before,
and now he could not enjoy them enough.
At last his eye fell upon one louse finer
than any other. A long time he stood
before it, and looked at tho beautiful
flowers in the windows, and the rich cur
tains and the costly marble palaces, and
the great pictures that he could see with
in. Tho very windows were larger than
the front door of his little house in Tot-
tlingen.
At last he could not help stopping a
gentleman who was going by, and say
ing to him in honest German, “My good
frieud, can you tell mo what tho name of
the gentleman is who owns this great
house opposite ?” Tho man whom he
accosted was probably thinking of some
very imyortant matter, and so be turned
off poor Hans with tho simple answer,
“Kannitverstan,” which iu English is the
same ns tho words “Cannot understand,”
kan being ran. nil being not, verstan be
ing understand. The good Germau,
however, did not know the man answered
anything but the name of the rich man,
hut stood and stared at the house, and
thought wlmt n happy man Mr. Kaunit-
verstan must be to live in such a magnif
icent mansion, and have everything that
heart could wish.
.By ami by Hans wandered on till lie
got to tho great docks of Amsterdam.
He was amazed at the size of tho great
shins, aud at the number of the masts,
unit wondered bow his eye would fight
its way through, and come to the cud of
tho forest of them.
A while after lie spied one ship larger
than the rest, and began to wutcli the
sailors as they unloaded it. It bud just
come in from tho East Indies, and was
full of nil manner of costly goods. Tho
men brought out tho bags of rieo and
camphor and sugar and coffee and pep
per, and placed them on the shore.
“Ah!” thought linns, “1 wish 1 knew
what is the name of the fortunate man
who owns all these things!” So ho turn
ed to one of the workmen. But lie re
ceived for his answer a blunt Kunnitver-
stan. “0,” said llans to himself, “of
course such a splondid house as that, I
sec uow where it all comes from.” So
the poor fellow began to fall into a very
gloomy fit, and to think how unequal
things are in this world; how poor he
was, and how rich other people are, and
to get very miserable indeed. So lie
wnlked away from the wharves, and kept
thinking: his face was loug, and his heart
was heavy.
All at once however* ho suw a new
sight which called his thoughts away
from himself. There came round the
corner a great funeral procession. It was
plain that it must be some very rich mau,
for the number of horsos, and the fine
clothing of the undertakers, and the rich
carriages, and the great plumes and the
heavily draped hearse, assured him that
it must be so. He slopped with his hat
in his baud, and felt a pity as every good
man should do for those who had been
left behind, When the long procession
was just closiug, IIuus ventured to ask a
gentleman who was walking beliiud
whose funeral it was. and who, although
with the mourners, was just then busily
engaged in reckoning up how much lie
should gain that day on his cotton, it hav
ing risenJten gilders a bale. So without
much attention to the question of tho
honest German, hejust answered, Kan-
nitvorstan. “O dear, dear,” thought
Hans, “then poor Mr. Kannitverstuu is
dead! For all his riches, for all his great
house, and great ship lie has had to die
just us I shall have to some time. Poor
man, there he lies, and all his money
can only buy him a shroud and a bunch
of rosemaries to lay on his breast! I am
sorry, I can't envy him.” The poor fel
low found his wav back to the tavern,
sat down to a good slice of black bread
and Limburg cheese, and ever afterward
when lie was tempted to wish ho was
richer than he was, lie thought of poor
Mr. Kuiniitverstnn away in Amsterdam.

Ja an English paper wh find the following
characteristic anoedotos of tho deceased
Premier:
When Lord Derby’s translation of the
Iliad was tir~t announced, n guest at
Jiroudlattds told bun he mu*t keep p;»co
with his great rival by transluting the
Enoid. "Stop til] i him out of office, and
the parallel will bo complete.”
He laughingly quoted the authority of
»,n eminent poysiemn, that continuance in
office, with resulting employment, whs
good for the health. “Would not active
opposition do as well?” "No, no; that
stirs up the bile and creates acidity. Ask
DLraoli if it does not.”
Nothing, by the way, created acidity in
him ; he never said, or sanctioned an ill-
natured remark on anybody. On being
told that a clever assailant regretted a
persona! attack, ho said, “Tell him 1 am
not tho least otVended—the nioro particu
larly bocauso 1 think 1 had tho best of it.’
It was mentioned to him that bis Chan-
cdlor of tho Exchequer, Sir George Lew
is, had boon writing letters to Notea and
(^uorrios on 'Tho Wakeful no=s of Geesi-.**
'•The wukiifuliio-s of goctel Why the
Opposition will think ho means them;
and, what is worse, they may say they
are the goeso that saved the Capitol.”
A couple were censured for going to
country houses without an invitation.
.“Don't he hard on them,” wus his sug-
ostion, “for if they waited to be invited,
they might go nowhi re ”
On its being stated as a good sign that
L*dy was only attended by a pop
ular physician, who shall be namele-s, lie
said, “Ah, very true, when you trust
yourself to Dr. you should have a
superfluous slock of hoalth for him to
work upon.”
When at Hr.Midlands ho was a regular
attendant nt Komsey Church, but was oc
casionally la'e. Once, when ho did not
appear till towards the end of tho second
lesson, tho sermon was nioro than ordina
rily long, which a guest attributed to the
complacent consideration of tho clergy
man, who was determined that his lord-
ship should gain in nno way what ho had
lost in another. “I never saw it in that
light beforo. 1 will lake good care not to
tax his kindness again.”
He was a purist in language, grammar
and orthography, and fomo curious illus
trations of his zeal for their reformation
are preserved in the Foreign Office. Hu
had a confirmed dislike to “that that”
and “bad had as in n sentence thus
constructed : “It wus said that that gen
eral bad had a check.”
A Cautious Hkt.—Au old and most
respectable tradesman at Chichester, on
being asked if be over speculated on a
race, replied : ' I never bet more than a
halfpenny bun iu my life and then I
made a stipulation that if 1 luatl was to
