Terrible Tragedy at Brookrviixe,
Miss.—From a gelloman wl>» oame
down on tho train yo.tcrday from Mis-
siwippi. we learn that a terrible tragedy
occurred near Hrooksville, in that State,
ou Sunday morning^ last, which involved
the death of nearly a whole family. It
aeems that a young man named Jamea
Thompson had a misunderstanding with
his father, T. K. Thompson, about the
title to some property bold by the latter
nnd that ho went to the house Sunday
morning about daylight, and killed Ins
mother, his two sisters, Jennie and Mar
garet, nnd his brothor, Clay, andattempt-
ed to take tho life of his remaining sister
wounding her severely. He thenwont
to the river, where his father was at tbs
time, and attempted to kill him also,
snapped both brrrols of a shot-gun at
him. and then wounding him with a pistol.
The murderer was arrested and takou
to Biooksville on Monday, when he was
taken up and hanged by the citizens.
This story is confirmed by a loiter
from a friend in that section, who says
the murder was tho most fiendish and
diabolical act over perpetrated, and that
the murderer richly deserved the punish
ment ho received.—Rrgisltr and Adver-
liter.
. The True Philosophy.—One sultry hot
summor day an honest old man was
i dewing his field, when suddonly he be-
leld a godlike figure sowly approaching
him. The man started hack. ‘1 am Sol
omon,’ suid tho phantom, in a confiding
voico. ‘What art thou doing hero, old
ninn?—If thou art Solomon,’ wns the re
ply, ‘how cans't thou ask mo T When I
was a youth thou didst send me to the
nut; I saw its method of living, and it
taught me to ho diligent, industrious, and
gather the superfluous for u stormy day.
What I then leurned, I still continue to
do.’ ‘Thou bust studied thy lesson but
half,’ replied tho spirit, ‘go onco more
to the ant and loiiru from it also howto
find rest and quiet in the winter of thy
years, nnd how to enjoy that which thou
hast hoarded up.
A Tradition.— It has been a ipies-
tion for discussion among philosophers,
how it happens, that women, iinturally
amiable, when aroused, can say suoh
sharp nnd penetrating things. Tliemys-
tery was solved not long since, by tho
discovery of some very old archives, that
gives the following explanation of the
matter. It is said that when Iait sepa
rated from Abraham, that he determined
to invest his surplus funds in real estate;
nnd the city of (Sodom presenting an in
viting field, ho turned his fuce thither,
and the re located.— But so great wua.tlio
wickedness of the people, tlinf it was de
termined by tho Creator of tho universe
to destroy the place ; accordingly, mes
sengers were sent to lend l.ot and his
family out; they departed reluotantly ;
and Mrs. Lot giving her bonnet box to a
servant to bring along, wns wntchiug
and stopping for her nnd scolding with
ul, when she was suddenly turned into
a pillar of salt. Thus by n strange and
wonderful sympathy, a woman’s tongue
oven to this day.is quite salty, whonovor
she feels disposed to convert it Into a
saline weapon, especially, if her bonnet
is missing or a subject of critiquo,—

Cheeky.—A New York correspond-
ont tells an nneodoto of a robbery that
lately took placo at olio ot tho largest
bunking houses in that city. The bank
er stood inside his counter, near the
safe, A mull enmu in without a hut, und
with n pen behind his ear. He walkeif
round to the spot where the buukor stood,
who wns talking with a gentleman, and
said to him. “J’lease to movo sir,” and
tho banker did. The fellow cooly took
out of tho safe several thousand IJ' S.
bonds, and cooly walked uway, and has
never been seen from that time to this.
Near the closing hours of business the
bonds were sought for anil could not be
found. Tho banker turned to ouo of the
clerks nnd asked him for them, stating
that he snw him remove them from tho
drawer. Fortunately the clerk was able
to prove an alibi, und tlion the nudaoity
of the thief wns mude apparent.
Tho waterfalls which form so impor
tant a part of tho toilet of a modern lady
of fashion, are procured, it would seem,
at tho expense of a great ileal of nnnoy-
unco to the softer sex of Germany, Ac
cording to tho Europe newspaper the
whole country is in an itiprour on aooount
of the people who go about, scissors in
hand, with the express objeot of cutting
the lmir of every woman who wulks with
it dressed nttor the fashion of tho coun
try, i. e„ hanging in long plaits over tho
haok. Even the churches are nut free
from these pestilent thieves, the lastonsu
reported being that of a lady whose hair
was cut oft’ whilst engnged In hor devo
