Fortress Mon bo*, November 20.—The
Oaslppee, from Newport for Norfolk,
. passed here to-day.
Washington, November 20.—The fol-
Sp lowing significant paragraph is furnished
" from a reliablo source :
2 “Evidence accumulates that Cuban
matters will require mnoh correspondence
and delay. No complications need be
feared, as the Administration sees its way
clear : and while a war will be avoided,
Cuba will be free.’’
It is understood that Mr. Secretary
Irish has made an imperative demand
Upon Spaiu for the immediate restoration
„of property soized from American citi-
*©ns in Cuba, as he is desirous to report
to Congross that the stipulated restoration
has been made.
Tin: DON'S) AT HAVANA.
New York, November 20.—The officers
of the 8teumpship Moro Castle report that
on arrival at Havana the vessel was board
ed. While aboard the passengers were
unmolested, but upon landing six, of sev-
/ ontaon steorago passengers, were arrest-
» ml, but discharged after being searched.
£:■ The Spanish officers explained by saying
M they wore suspected of bearing despatches.
Tbo persons for whom they were soarcb-
ing came on tbo City of New York. She
f was boarded upon arrival, and her passen-
gers seized and searched. Six of them,
three of whom are women, were declared
guilty. Extensive correspondence was
aL.fouud secreted on their person. One was
nuice of Almeda, who had attracted con
siderable attention during the passage by
her great beauty and brilliant conversa-
*?tional powers.
jj The prisoners were confined in the
c ibin andtbeir fate is unknown. When the
■ Moro Oastlo left Bombalier, the express
: • agent attempted to throw some papers out
at the window, but they fell short. He was
at once condemned to death. Extensive
v correspondence, which had been seized,
* showed that many persons on the island,
* * .heretofore unsuspected, were implicated,
aud as tho Moro Custle left Havana they
wore being shot without mercy. It was
v estimated that about forty patriots, on
• various portions of the island hail met
.their fate. Meantime most extensive pre-
. partitions, for the reception of the Tor-
n tdo, wore going forward in Havana.
Sl'he captain and engineers wore lauded to
*i -the skies, and the admiration for their
jAeroism and valor was unbounded. Snb-
#%ciiptiou« in Ilnur behalf met with great
, response everywhere, and papers were cir
culate! to the must distant parts of the
island.
in tho meantime the General of the ma
rines, o. Admiral, addressed the people,
,*ayiug that the officers had only done
their duly and desired no publio domon-
—Uftration; they wore paid for it by the
Davy in whose service the glorious deeds
had been accomplished, but the people
aud press took a different ground. The
heroes had accomplished achievements in
!*hehalf of the people. They belonged to
the people, and the people were deter
mined they should not go uurowarded.
Tbo following is an extract from a pri
vate letter received from Cuba,Monday
“On the (5th inst., at 5 i\ m., Captain-
General Jovellur telegraphed to Burriel
that tho Spanish Minister at Washington
*>Wad advised him not to shoot any more
men. Tho said telegram was received by
Burriel at Santiago de Cuba early on the
8th. On the 10th he shot tho fifty-seven
men. Gen. Jovcllar says that he com
prehended the necessity of saving the
lives of these men, but was overruled.”
