A Hood Man,
There are rumors that Postmaster John
son will bo the Republican nominee for
Congress. He is quite s young man, but
he is honest in all his acts, and able for
his years.
Tho l*avement.
The Hootchmau who blessed tho Duke
of Argyle for the mile posts, which were
found so handy to scratoh against, had
leas cause for congratulating that noble
man than have wo for praising (he men
who invented patent pavements, and those
who have (ho public spirit to use them.
Hirard Military Company,
A movement for tho formation of a vol
unteer company has been progressing in
Girard, Ala., for a week or more. On
Haturday night tho company was organ
ized by the election of M. R. Fly, Csptsiu,
and other ofllcors. Suoh au organization
was needed over there, as it will no doubt
aid in keeping the peaco, or to repress
auy disturbance that may bo uttempted.
Another Kero ten* Accident.
On Sunday night, s boy about fourteen
years old, a sou of Dock Oliver, negro
train hand on tho Mobile and Girard Rail
road, wa* pouring korosene oil from a tin
can into a lamp which was lighted, the
dame caught and exploded the oau, burn
ing the boy so badly that no hope is en
tertained of his reoovery.
Coal Supply.
Our coal dealors have well supplied
(heir yards for wintor custom. Tho con
sumption of coal has been quadrupled iu
the iMt three winters, and wood has been
kept at a low rate. Wo notioed, in addi
tion to a large pile of Moutovallo coal,
quite a lot of Pennsylvania anthracite
ooal at one of the yards.
Savannah and Memphis Mtallroad.
We uuderstaud that the Savannah and
Memphis Railroad have secured seven
more milos of iron. This will carry the
road to Atkins' Gap, a poiut sixty miles
from Opelika, Ala., and twenty-three from
Childersburg, on the Selma, Rome aud
Daltou Railroad.
The First o/ the Heaton,
liast night the first "German" of the
season wan given. The rooms were bril-
liautly lighted, and beauty aud grace
were thero assembled. Shop's Hiring
baud struck up the "beautiful blue l>au-
ube," aud the pleasure season of 1H74
ooiumeucod.
Cheering News for Alabamians.
We heard a gentleman from New York
aay that bo heard Gov. Lewis say, a short
time siuoe, that he had no idea the Re
publicans would carry Alabama next No
vember. Wo hopo tho Doiuooracy of that
Stato will not permit their Radical Gov
ernor's prediction to prove untrue. Ala
bama oau elect the Democratic ticket, if
her people will work until tho eleotiou,
aud then watch the counting of the votes.
Religious /feme.
Rev. ('. A. Kendrick, who has been for
some days iu attendance upon a district
meeting of the Columbus Assooiatiou,
held at Bethel Church, in this county,
returned ou Sabbath evening in time to
oocupy his pulpit at night. He reports a
large attendauce at Bethel and au inter
esting series of meetings. Many persons
from the city wout out to tho meeting on
Sabbath morning and returned iu the
eveniug.
Kail road Business,
Business ou our railroads ia fast im
proving. Much freight from New York
is passing through daily for morohauts iu
the southwest. Wo suppose the railroads
will Boon commence running their regular
winter freight trains. The past summer 1
has been a hard oue ou railroads, aud 1
many employees have been out of work,
but the incoming season bids fair to be a 1
prosperous oue.
Hirer Net re.
Such a rise in the Chattahoochee as we
had yestorday is a very unusual event for
August. It would pass very well for a
respectable wintor or spriug freshet. The
water was over tho first bank all day,
covering the lower portion of tho wharf,
aud almost reaching to the top of the
granite woik in tho piers of the lower
railroad bridge. We heard a plan tor ex-
preas the opinion that some of the lowest
of the river bottom lands in cultivation
would be overflowed. There must have
been heavy rains up the country, aa well
m here, aa the rise was sustained all day
yaaterday.

ditches and streets of the city.
—For tho ps*t two weeks tho Tallassee
Factory, of Alabama, has been shipping
over the Western Railroad, nearly every
day, twenfy-flve bales of cotton, bought
here in (he summer.
—The oottou and woolen factories seem
to he doing a brisk business, judging
from the quantities shipped daily to the
West and Houthwest.
—If the quantity of iron ties received
here the pMt week afford a criterion, wo
would say that Oolutnbns will receive
much more cotton during the ensuing
season than the past.
—The frolicsome oyster had beet keep

Our Necessities.
Macon, Atlanta and Montgomery seeui
more like cities than Columbus simply
because they have wholesale houses and
Columbus, with tho exception of Gawley
A Lewis, has none. Now that our river
is about to he cleaned out, and we can
huve water communication all tho year,
there is a chance here for live wholesale
houses unsurpassed by auy point in tho
State ; and there is a certain fortune iu it
to those who have the pluck and energy
to take hold. We need another dry goods
house, a grocery establishment, and a
hardware and dnig firm, with live rivals.
This will stir up trade, and the splendid
position of Columbus should make her
command it. All the large Georgia aud
Alabama towns sell under our very noses,
when we should command much of their
trade, and hold the monopoly on the
Savannah A Memphis Railroad, as well
as the river country of West Florida,
Houthwost Georgia, aud Southeast Ala
bama. Who will take hold ? Whoever
does is sure to win.
Tli® Hirer Improvement.
This week the engineers will begin
work on Woolfolk's bar. The river is un
usually high at this time, but it is thought
it will not interfere with the preliminary
work.
TAe Sheep.
The are forty fine sheep in Muscogee
county, and it is said that every time they
hear a pistol report that announces the
death of a cur, they cut up all kinds of
didos aud assume the fieroest kiud of ex
pressions—for sheep.
Our Sympathies
Are with Mr. J. H. Martin, editor of this
paper who yesterday received the aad
news of tho death of n younger brother
in Sunflower county, Miss. Mr. Martin,
the deceased, was a good Confederate
soldier. He was a planter aud unmarried.
KtlUor Knquirer:—There are two
places in Columbus which require atton
tion badly : Olio is at tho eMt cud of the
upper bridge, and the other at the orossiug
on the west sido of Broad street, over the
M. A G. Railroad. A few loads of earth,
properly put in, would improve matters
vastly at those two spots, I believe. Can't
they be attended to ? X.

Warm Springe.
Wo learn that Colonel Mustaiu has
made his famous Warm Springs unusually
attractive this year. It has become quite
a family resort. A Gorman would call it
a "Kindergarten," aa at this time there is
said to be thirty children there under ten
years of age, and less than that number
of adults.
The Enquirer-Hun Tent,
Major Calhoun, with his ageut, will
have a tent at the Meriwether oamp meet
ing, near the White Sulphnr Springs. He
wishes the cause of the meetiug all good;
I hut ho is going thero exclusively to show
that a live newspaper in a large family is
uoxt to godliness.
Crops,
We learn from a gentleman who has
just returned from Harris aud Meriwether
counties, that the cotton crop is unusually
good, and is uow safe. The cottou has
suffered a little from drouth, but so far
thero have been no indications of worms,
i aud on many plantations hands are busy
picking. Within two weeks cotton will
come pouring in, and there will be leas
talk of impecuuiosity.
