Spider Again Wins,
Tho race ut Atlanta on Friday for trot
ting horses was again won by Mosoly’s
“Spider,” of Columbus, in threo straight
heats. His compoditors were Ralston’s
Lnoy, a gray horse from Nashville, and
another we have forgotten. “Spider”
in 2:41, 2:88 and 2:37, milo heats,
had nothing really to oppose him. The
first money was four hundred dollars. Ho
had uo competitor to increase his speed.
Tho general impression of those who
have returned from Atlanta is that Basil
Duke, owiug to the injuries received in
the runaway we mentioned yesterday, will
not he entered iu Tuesday s raoe, and
‘•Snider” will have a wulk over tho track
and
—No Mayor’s Court yesterday.
—The factories paid out on yesterday
about $12,000 as wages to operatives for
tho past two weeks.
—Iu noticing the grand bull iu Atlanta
on Thursday night tho Constitution says :
From Columbus came Mrs. Leo Jordan
and Miss Lucy Ellis.”
—There is hut one university in life,
and that is where the heart is educated.
—The residents of Bardis, Miss., are
disrespectfully spoken of as “Sardines.”
—The colored people of Georgia own
property to the amount of $t»\ 157,758.
This is in a Democratic State. In Ala
bama, ruled by Republicans, they do not
return one million. Which is tho best
government ?
Perseverance is a strong will; obsti
nacy is a strong won’t.
—Tho firm of Win. Henry Woods &
Co., iu Suvanuuh, has been dissolved by
tlidrnwul of Win. Henry Woods
and 11. E. Barkus. Their successors aro
C. B. & C. li. Woods.
—Where did you got those handsome
eorcoata and talmas, was tho general iu-
cpiiry of thoso who appeared on the
streets in tho cool hours of early yester
day. “At tho Baltimore Store, of course,”
was tho answer.
—A barber is one who has tho razors
to shave, and a mother the shuveis to
raise.
—The bonnets now aro remarkable for
presenting pressed ribbons; the corsets
for pressed ribs.
“Lord, wliut a cow !” was the nppiov-
ing remarks of a tetotl* r after uwnllering
a potout punch, which had been offered
as a glass of milk.
—Au old Columbus negro being ask
which ho preferred, work for wages,
part of the crop, answered: “I ’elui
link bofe do best, ef yer kin only bruug
’em togedder.”
—Those who desire rich, warm clothing
nt tho very lowest prices aro very fond
of visiting the Baltimore Storo of liollin,
Rich A Co.
—Tf you givo ft beggar in Rome te
cents he will bless your soul; if you don’
ho will bless your eyes.
— The receipts of cotton were quite
heavy yesterday. An immense qnuntit.v
iH exposed in tho fields, which will be in
jured if we have much rain.
Tho now boat us completed draws
fourteen inches of wator. Bbo cun be
trimmed to twelve.
—Noah's bus kept up the ark-hives
while he whs nil oat.
—Go to church to-day, and you will feel
otter to-morrow, and make tho heart of
tho minister happier by giving him a full
congregation.
—The great demand yesterday was to
borrow umbrellas.
Our best instrumental performer is
tho “Katydid.” Each wing contains a
tambourine, and by opeuing and shutting
them they aro rubbed against the other,
and produces tho sound of “Katy did, she
did.”
There aro said to be many thousands
of bales of cotton along tho river awaiting
shipment to Columbus.
—This is a doubting age, but a call nt
tho Baltimore Store will remove all doubts
that the proprietors have one of tho
choicest aud most complete stocks of
mule wearing apparel ever shown iu Co

tho quarter ending October lHt: Money

From July 1st, 187”., to June 30th, 1874,
the orders sold were $05,785. The orders
paid will bo given in a day or two.
This shows tho largo amount of busi

Wo again reiterate tho opinion that the
present officers in chargo are as courteous
aud attentive as gentlemen could he.
The only objection is political. They aro
all Republicans. If a petition were cir
culated every white man in Columbus,
aud a largo majority of the colored peo
ple in Columbus would sign it to retain
tho present officers, under a Republican
Administration. All know them to be

Fays Better than Law or Medicine.
The general idea is that a man of edu
cation should be either a doctor, lawyer
or physician, editor or follow a literary
profession. Numerous instances might be
cited to show thnt for brains there are oth
er avocations nud moro lucrative incomes.
Skilled labor receives just compensation.
It may not be uninteresting to know that
tasteful and inventive tailors—cutters—
aro to-dny receiving salaries equal to a
lepartment officer. Harry Skiff, of Now
York, receives $7,500 from C&shaud,
Whitford A Co.; Fitzpatrick, with Mor-
hmik, of Cincinnati, receives n snlnrv of
$10,000; Bomfaine, with .Hale, of Pitts
burg, receives $4,500; Dillon, of St.
Louis, receives $4,000; Mr. Bartraui, of
Washington City, was offered $5,000 a
year to go to Chicago, with tho position
guaranteed for five years. Numerous
others obtain salaries ranging from $2,-
000 to $3,000 per annum, while a cutter
of ordinary ability receives from $1,500
to $ 1,800 per year.
Shirt cuttors frequently receive $2,500
per year. Is this not better thau showing
off dry goods at $1500 por year, or practic
ing law or mediciuo without muking a
living? Many tailors iu New York are
