DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER B, 1874.
Mow Webntcr Prepared Ilia
Speeehei.
In ono of the debates in Congress
which suddenly called Daniel Webster to
his feet, he made a brief but quite elo
quent speoch, apparently without any op
portunity for previous preparation. In
the course of his remarks he drew out tho
following sentence, which has ever since
been admired as one of the most harmo
nious aud expressive in the English lan
guage. He was speaking of our military
conflict with Great Britain : “Our fathers
raised their flag against a power to which,
for purpose of foreigu conquest and sub
jugation, Hume, in the height of her
glory," is not to be compared—a power
which has dotted tho surfaco of the whole
globe with her possessions and military
posts; whose morning drumbeat, follow
ing tho sun in its course and keeping
puce with the hoars, circles the earth
with one continnous and unbroken strain
of tho martial airs of England."
As he Hat down, ono of the Senators
congratulated hiiu upon his speech, and
alluding to the abovo passage, said that
to him it was inconceivable how Mr.
Webster, in a speech so manifestly un
premeditated, could have formed so per
fect mid ho beautiful a sentence, which
with hours of study he could not im
prove. Mr. Webster replied that the pas
sage M as not extemporaneous; that in his
Hummer vacation he visited Quebec, and
while standing on tho massive and al
most impregnable citadel there, looking
out upon the woundrons scene of national
grandeur and of nature's lovliuess spread
boforo him, the idea occurred to liis mind.
He immediately took bis seat upon a guu,
and with pencil and paper Hketched the
thought in the most appropriate language
lie could at the moment command. Upon
arriving at his hotel ho sat down and re
wrote it, with many interlineations and
erasures, until ho had moulded it into the
form of words which satisfied him. He
then laid it aside in his releutive memory,
to l»o used when the occasion should offer.
The opportunity arose upon that day.
Count Tliot $000.
An amusing, though and illustration of
tho way in which tho most of oar farmers
and planters have been conducting their
busiut ss for the past four or live years, is
proved in tho following anecdote, which
was htatod to us us being almost literally
correct:
A farmer consigned to his factor in this
city, a lot of cotton to meet one of his
maturing drafts, aud followed it and or
dered it sold. It netted nino hundred
dollars and was placed to his credit.
lie begged his factor for tho bare priv
ilege of carrying it homo with him,
that he und his wife might oonut it over.
“For my wife aud I," he said, “haven’t
bad tho plensuroof counting a dollar <
ing from our crop in throe years. I’ll bo
Hiiro to return it—I pledge luy word and
honor to bring it back.’’
Being a man of good character and
fine integrity, liis factor handed it to him.
Tho planter went home. At night, after
suppor, he aud his wifo drew their chairs
to a table, carefully, and with pleasurable
emotions counted, bill by bill, the package
of money, wrapped it up again, i>nd the
following day returned it to his factor—
perhaps with a sigh, uud may-bo with a
groan—that this system of farming was
making him a poorer man year by year.
Farmers, point the moral for yourselves
—put on your brakes—reverse your en
gine—mike your own supplies—avoid
lions aud mortgages for Western corn aud
bacon—make your own manure heaps—
amt then you may hope and expect to
count over your money with your wives
and not have to return it to your factor.
Count it as your own, the fruit of your
honest and laborious life, and hold it ns
long ns you wish and spend it ns you wish
with 110 ghastly mortgages to intervene
betwoen you and its enjoyment.—Macon
Tel.
Wiiat Hester Says of Himself.—From
the Now York Sun's correspondent we
loam tho following:
Hester is ono of tho follows who was
used in Ku-Klux trials in North and South
Carolina to convict innocent men. llo
was an applicant for the position of Chief
of the Secret Service of the Treasury De
partment, and failing to get it, came into
the Sun oflieo to complain of tho treat
ment ho had received at the hands of men
lio had served, lie acknowledged to your
correspondent, that he was hoartily sorry
for the puft he had played iu the Ku-Klux
business, and declared that many of tho
persons who had been convicted and sent
to tho penitentiary wero innocent of any
intent to do wrong, lie said that I10
would never again have anything to do
with this sort of business.
The Pittsburg iron manufacturers in
their endeavors to reduce tho cost of iron
making to the lowest possible point are
now experimenting with natural gas as a
cheaper fuel oven than tho exceedingly
cheap coal that abounds in that region.
This gas may bo obtained for tho boring
ovor large areas of territory, aud at Erie,
Pa., it is now used for wanning and
lighting houses, gfDerating steam and
various oth«*r purposes. Tho first practi
cal use of this fuel for iron making is at
the iron works of Messrs. Rogers & Burch
field, at Loechburg, near Pittsburg, and
at works of tho same firm at McKeesport,
where gas has been partially, if not en
tirely, used in the manufacture of iron iu
puddling and heating furnaces, and to
generate purer for tho machinery. Tho
advantages obtained are, first, nn econo
my of some $700 per week—the cost of
tho coal previously used in tho works
named—and a very considerable gain, or
more strictly speaking, avoidance of waste
in the amount of iron made, together
with a decided improvement in quality of
product.
—The cave of Gacnhuamilpa, in Mexi
co, is said to be the largest in the world.
It is covered by a volcanic mountain with
an extinct crater. Mr. Porter C. Bliss has
twice examinod and explored it, the last
time in February of the present year. Six
hundred persons constituted the last ex
ploring party, und they were provided
with lights aud scientific appliances. Af
ter reaching a level at perhnps fifty feet
depth, they proceeded tty miles into the
interior. The roof was so high—a suc
cession of balls—that rockets often ex
ploded before striking it. Labyryuthino
passages leave tho main hall in every di
rection. Stalagmites and stalactitios uie
abundant. Below this cave, at great
depth, are two other immense caves, from
each of which issues n branch of a great
river, uniting here. These two rivers
enter some five miles distant at the other
side of tho mountaiu, flow parallel, aud
issue at lust together.
Wiikke Texas Cotton Goes.—The Gal
veston (Texas) Neil's says that the town of
Sherman is shipping most of tho cotton
received at that point North. Up to the
23il inst. there had I eon shippod since the
1st. of September 2,740 bales to the North
by rail, and I,."10 si lipped South, besides
r.r»3 bales hauled to Denison for shipment
North, muking a {total of 4,003 bales
shipped from Sherman to October 23, this
season, of which 3,31)3 bales w'oro sent to
St. Louis and New York.
—The King of tho Sandwich Islands
will arrive at San Francisco about the last
of November. Ho, together with tho
ambassadors, will spend their time iu
Washington, and will probably be there
at tho opening of the next term of Con
gress. Honolulu papers say that while
the personello of the Embassy about to go
to Washington to negotiate a reciprocity
is not oil that could desired, still tho
members are well qualified for tho emi
nent mission.
