Arrival of the Gorcrnment Hnat, Clara
Dunning— Hirer Improvement—Wyt-
ty Brings Vp 300 Halve of Cotton.
The Clara Dunning arrived Sunday
morning in charge of Captain James
Campbell, bringing with her Major Dam-
roll, the United States engineer in charge
of tbo works on tho Gulf coast, with head-
quarters at M obile. He was met at Neal's
landing by Major Oladowski on the
Dsudy, who baa charge of our river im
provement.
The Clara ia a stern wheel boat, 105
feet long, 110 feet beam, aud was bnilt
tun years ago for tho Alabama river trade.
She wax recently condemned, and was
purchased by Major Daturell for $2,000.
For a number of weeks she has been on
the dry docks at Mobile, and thoroughly
overhauled, strengthened and repairod at
an expense of $1,500. On board in every
applianco for tbo work on our river. Her
capstan ia worked by stoam. She takes
the place of the Daudy Mooro, rented
from tho Central Line, in tho government
service of denning out tho river, for
which river men protiouuco her admira
bly fitted, as she combines great strength,
power of ongiues, and draws only twenty
inches of wator. After seeing her, all
have become convinced tho purchase has
been a wise one.
Major Daturell warmly approves the
plaus of Major Oladowski, aud tho build
ing of tho dam at Woolfolk'n bar will be
coiutuencod at once. We hear it stated
that Major D. expressed tho opinion that
tho Government could very wisely ex
pend $150,000 upon our river, and that
such nn Amount would bo recommended
to Congress to finish tho incouipletod
work. Ho carefully, with the assistance
of competent steatubuutmon, examined
the stream ns he cutue up. He, with tho
crew that catun up on tho Clara, left for
Mobile yostorday morning.
Tho Clara was piloted from Apalachico
la by Juno Jonkiiis, assisted by Mr. Geo.
Laphain. Captain Drockaway now bo
comes tho captain and pilot, Mr. Win.
Bsuls the onginoor, and Mr Geo. Liphnm
mate, all under charge of Major Oladow*
ski. Bho will probably go to Woolfolk's
to-day.
The Wylly arrived Sunday night with
1W0 boles cotton aud othor freight,
amounting in weight to ten bales—making
in all 1100 bules. She drew with that
load 27 inches water, and came over tho
bar without difficulty. With tho excep
tion of tho slight accident of breaking
two of her log chains in going down, she
work* d like a charm, and to tho entire
satisfaction of her officers. She is con
sidered just tho thing for low wator. The
hog chains wore too light. They uro be
ing replaced by tho heavy ones on the
New Jackson. Tho boat will leave 011
Saturday.
A steamer is duo to-morrow or next
day.
Tho Julia Ht. Clair arrived last aftor-
noon with 105 bales of cotton. Homo
three hours was consumed in pulliug over
tho bar. Sho loaves to morrow morning
at 8 o'clock.
H\ U. Blakely Drowned.
He left here on tho Julia Ht. Clair last
week. He is the owner of a bar-room up
town, and had been drinking heavily. At
Eufaula ho left the boat, seemingly with
tho intention of stopping, but fainted
when half way up tho hill. Ho turned to
go back to the boat sod again fell in a
fainting fit, when the hands carriod him
on board. Tho clerk, Mr. M. Sparks,
thou asked him if he desiro J to go on to
Haiubridge. He answered “Yes,” and de
posited his money, $205, with the clerk,
telling him to deduct his pasaAgo wherever
he stopped, and give him tbo
remainder. He bad several danger
ous spslls on tho boat, resulting
from the effects of delirium, and was
once prevented from walking overboard.
Ho had f.trango visions, but his senses
were readily recalled by a few words spo
ken by others. He was last soon Sunday
morning about five o’clock just after the
boat left Columbia for Eufaula. When
next looked for, some miles below tho
latter place, he was found to bo missing
and nothing of his whereabouts could be
discovered. Tho boat bad mado no land
ing. It is supposed he stepped off the
how, was immediately swept under the
boat and found a watery grave. Ili*
effects $Kt5 in money (after deducting
fare), valise, overcoat and gun were
brought to the city and deposited in tbo
office of tho Central Line. The deceased
was a young man.

WhUvly on Trlnl-A Meeting
The people of Columbus will hardly
ever forget the former detective Whitoly,
who tyrnnized over our people when tho
military were over ns, and arrosted so
many of our best young men in the Asli-
bnru business and manufactured testimo
ny to convict them of murder—in the lat
ter of which attempt ho was so signally
foiled by his witnesses being proved liars.
Whituly hns uow been doposed front his
office, and is on trial for robbery. Tho
chances are promising that ho will end bis
days in the penitentiary. The proof thus
far adduced is strong that he it was who
procured men to break open tho safe of
tho District Attorney in Washington. In
tho corridor of tho Bocorder’s Court at
Washington, whou Whitoly was in custo
dy, it was tho pleasuro of one of tho ex-
Axhhurn prisoners to soo him. Whitoly
tried to nvoid mooting the gentleman's
eye, but the latter forced him to look and
eyed his formor oppressor—the detected
robber—with exultatiou aud scorn.
Whitoly appears all over tho villain, and
looked on that occasion as mean as a yel
low' dog. and dropped hi a gaze at once.

LOOK AT YOUB TICKETS I
Tbo Badical* have virtually given up
their State ticket in Alabama. They are
trying a trick which can decoive no one
upon examination, aud Democrats thould
read over every ticket before they vote it
or give it to others. The great endeavor
is to elect Betts over the river. lie has
had the Democratic Slate ticket printed,
including the Congreaituen at Large, and
then added his own name for Congress in

The county tickets are many and vari
