berg offered a resolution for tha appoint
ment of a select committee to enquire
whether any ofttcor of the Government

Columbia, particularly relative to tbe so-
called safe burglary conspiracy.

Hays offered a resolution for a select
oommittee to enquire into the political
affairs of Alabama, and aa to the use of

sufferers by the floods last spring.
Hays said he had no objection to thet,

Mr. Sloes, at the request of Mr. Young,
of Georgia, offered a resolution calling on
tha Secretary of War for information as
to whether any army offloer in the South

the Legislature of any Slate compensa
tion for his services, or has, while on
doty as auoh officer, been admitted to the
bar, or praotioed for hia personal emolu
ment.

train on the branch of the Great Western
Railway was thrown from the track near
Woodstock to-day, and precipitated down
an embankment. Several of the carriages
fell into a oanal skirting the road and six
teen of the passengers were drowned.

The Montgomery Advertiser has tha

Mobile, Deeember 23.— A fatal duel in
lliMhaippi, near Grand Bay, waa fought
mt noon to-day with duelling pistols, ten
pmoea. The principals were A. H. Tardy
and B. D. Lay, both of this city. Second
for Tardy was Col. J. M. Williams—for
Lay, Capt. P. U. Murphy. Tardy waa
killed at the first fire. He was Rbot
through the heart. The body waa brought
in to-night on tbe New Orleans train.

Tardy, and construed by Lay into a re
