Yesterday afternoon, at half past three,
We refer our readers to the sohool
notice of Mr. B. H. Goetohius. This
gentleman has been working quietly but
earnestly with the pupils committed to
his charge during the paat term, and the
unanimous opinion of his patrons is, that
their boys have made most wonder
ful progress. We oen eafely recommend
his sohool as one of thorough discipline,
earnest work and moderate tuition.
Parents committing their boys to the care
of Mr. G. will find that they have not
done amiss.

Mr. Cobb, on Wednesday night last. The
parties engaged were Messrs. Mitehell
Smith and John Hinson, both young
men scarcely twenty years of age. They
were at a party at the place above named,
and got into a dispute about a hat. Hin
son became enraged with Smith and
stabbed him iu the left breast, inflicting
a wound from which Smith died in two
hours. Hinson is in jail.

More Sunday School Festivals.
The Brownoville Methodist Sunday
School had a delightful Christmas enter
tainment Friday night. The church was
tastefully decorated. The festival con
sisted of songs, speeohes, recitations, dia
logues, distribution of presents, Ac., See.
The boys and girls acquitted themselves
in their respective roleB with unusual
oredit, and reflooted honor upon their
school and community. The house was
crowded from beginning to end, and the
best of order was maintained. There
were some fifty ladies, gentlemen and
children who took part in the varied and
interesting programme, all of whom elic
ited warm aud enthusiastic plaudits from
the audience. Where all did so well it
would be unjust to particularize. Trinity
School is in a very flourishing condition,
numbeis about one hundred and fifty
scholars and occupies fine ground for
Sunday School effort.
The Broad Street Methodist Sohool also
had their Christmas festival Friday night.
A Urge number of persons, old and
young, were present. The exercises con
sisted merely of music, and the distribu.
tion of small bags of confectionery. The
little folks were made happy and the
evening passed off delightfully. This
school numbers nearly two hundred teach
ers aud soholars and is accomplishing a
good work among the ohildren of the city
and suburbs. Mr. A. D. Merchant is Su
perintendent,
A Good Time.
Perhaps no part of our population have
eujoyed the holidays so much as the opera
tives of the Eagle end Pbenix Manufac
turing Company, who have been so liber
ally dealt with by the officers of the com
pany. These operatives were given two
days in which to rest, sod were supplied
with fine, fat turkeys and other dainties
upon which to luxuriate, and that the
liberal treat was appreciated and enjoyed
we have no doubt. We have never seen
this important claas of our community in
■neh high spirits. The little factory boys
were supremely happy in firing the oraok-
ers famished by their ‘'bosses, ’ and such
a universal popping has rarely been beard
In these parts. We cannot too highly
commend the kindness of beart and liber
ality of purse which have characterized
the Eagle and Phenix Company in this
regard. It is well calculated to briog
about a better state of feeling between the
officers aud their laborers, and to secure
more faithful service from the bone and
sinew which contributes so largely to the
prosperity of our city and section. Such
kind consideration on the part of our
capitalists for those in their employ, gives
ue a better opinion of human nature, and
oonvineee us that there is really no an
tagonism between labor and oapital—At
least in Columbus.
Matt. Murphy, the Marahal of Columbus,
was shot under the following circuuiaUn-
ces:
THE B AGLETS.
There is a family named Bagley living
near Cusseta, Chattahoochee county, and
in this family there are five boys, noted
for being boystering bullies, local
terrors and habitual pistol toters. They
add to their list of acoomplLhmenta that
of being hard driukers, rough swearers,
and as their admirers say, for such creatures
have admirers, “they are powerful n »)y
fellers to rile/' On Thursday night two
brothers of this peculiar family oarne to
our oity, ostensibly to see the show, but
in truth to continue a quarrel began with
police officer Duucan last summer. One
of these brothers is named Benjamin F.
Bagley, aged twenty-four; the other is
Milford L. Bagley, aged twenty-two.
The latter is a married min, a big coarse
looking, pock-marked min, who has bean
heard to boast that t( he was the only man
iu Chattahooohee county who could lick
his (Bagley’a) father." The elder Bagloy
is said to be in easy, circumstances, aud
from what we can learn he has doue but
little to correot the innate tendency to
broil, drink and pistols in bis sons.
TUB VBBBARATIOM.
The Bagley a, after the trouble with
officer Duncau, were arrested end gave
bonds for their appearance, but as too
mauy criminal oases have been settled,
this one ugaiuHt an offloer of the law was
permitted to go unpunished, the Baglays
promising to behave. Yesterday they
drank freely at the saloon of Heyman A
Co., on Broad street, and after having
filled themselves with '‘Dutch" courage,
as the boys sometimes call whiskey, Mil
ford Bagley began to swear at and threaten
the police, aud vowing that he would kill
Mr. Duncan. Ilea. Bagley swore that “he
and his brother could take auy eight po-
Uoemen in Columbus and put them in the
look-up ;" that “they were from Chatta
hoochee, and if any d—d man dare to in
terfere with them, By-Ged, they would
put daylight through him." They swore
aud rared like the oowardly blackguards
that they are, till they got down to the
store of Watt A Walker, under the Ran
kin House. Here Matt Murphy made au
effort to get them to leave town quietly.
THE BHOOTINO.
We eaw the men about thie time, but
there was nothing in their walk to denote
they were drunk, only their blasphemous
words, and that desperado swagger and
bearing that in the presence of a Western
crowd would have resulted in their lynch
ing, for both men had their pistols in
their hands, and like tigers thirsting for
blood they glared about for the slightest
provocation to shoot. Both men mounted
their horses and Marshal Mnrpby begged
them to go home, and never onoo used a
harsh word, though the pistolled despera
does were pouring out torrents of vulgar
ity, blasphemy and threats. They rode
past the Opera House, the officers following
at a respectful distance. When opposite
Mayor Mcllhenny’s house, right at the
oornsr of the Court House squaro, Mil
ford Bagley, with a terrible oath turued
his horse and came back at the officers,
Murphy, McEaohern aud Duncan. Dun
can walked ahead to stop Ben Bagley, and
Murphy made another effort
get Milford to go homo. He laid his
hand on the horse’s bridle, intending to
arrest the man if he did not leave. But,
while he was speaking, Milford Bagley
raided the pistol, whioh he held in his
hand, and fired at the Marshal, the ball
striking Mr. Murphy on the right side of
the neck and ranging down towards his
heart. The Marshal staggered buck,
drew his pistol from bis pooket and fired,
the ball striking Bagley in the stomach.
At the same instant Officer McEaohern
drew his pistol, and though the desperado
had turned his horso aud was galloping
off, he shot him through the body. Iu
the meantime Ben Begley had firod at
Officer Duncan, aud the shot was re
turned; then both with the speed of the
wind galloped away.
thr CHASE.
The intention of the desperadoes was to
escape from the town and reach their
home in Chattahoochee, where they, no
doubt, felt they would be safe, but Provi
dence did not so order it. The best proof
that both men were conscious tnd respon
sible is that they made to Bush’s corner,
on6 mile, inside of threi minutes, aud
this while Milford Bagloy had two bullets
through his body. At this point the
wounded man reined in, and fell from his
horse, and his brother and partner in this
work came book. In the meantime the
officers started in pursuit. Mr. Mc-
Miohael tried to get a horse at Mnndy’s,
but that good citizen refused to give him
an animal. 8o chase was mode in an ex
press wagon, and the men were captured
in a house into which Milford Bagley had
been carried.
the baoleys.
Nothing could exceed the indignation
of the people when they heard Murphy
was shot, and this indignation reached
the boiliDg point, when a few miuutes
after they leamo 1 the Bagleys were cap
tured. Ben. Bagley, who escaped unin
jured, was the first brought back, and
they only required the lead of one de
termined man to tear him from the police
and bang him in the court-house yard,
but fortunately prudence prevailed. Ben.
F. Bagley is a man of small stature, with
a coarse, besotted face, and brown eyes
bleared by passion and intoxioation. He
cowed terribly when he met the eyes of
the crowd, and he kept his eyes fixed on
Mayor Mollheuny with the pleading
look of a man who dreaded the conse-
madness and intemperance. We con
versed with Beu Bagley last night iu jail,
but be seemed sullen aud defiant, and at
tempted to defend his condoot and that
of his brother.
MR. MURPHY.
Mr. Mnrpby «w very low last night,
and the chsnoee are against his recovery.
He has been Marshal of onr town for
many years, and is universally esteemed
as au honorable, upright eltiEen. He is
about thirty-three years of age, of Irish
extraction aud a Catholic in faith. He
has been twice married and has two ohil
dren, one of them a baby. After being
shot he was curried into Dr. Gheney’a
drug store, and the Doctor, assisted by oth
er physioians, who soon appeared, did all
they could to aid him. Late last night he
had been spitting blood, yet he retained
his consoioumess, and the dootora feel
more eneeuvaged.
PISTOLS AND WHISKY.
The Bagleya had no reason to hate Mr.
Murphy, or any of the officers at whom
they so recklessly fired in a crowded
street, bnt when they oatne to Columbus,
like the cowardly blackguards that they
are, they came sober, and with that in
signia of a eoward on their persona, pis
tols. Their attack on the police, after
driukiug mean whisky, was an attaok on
the people. One of them has gone to hia
account, but the other is equally guilty.
We feel sure the law will be vindioated,
and that no technical quibbles will be ac
cepted as a reason for releasing Ben
Bagley ou bond. Only a jury ahould
have the power to do this. An indignant
and outraged people will anxioualy watch
the course of the law.
LATBR.
Since writing the above we leam that
Milford Bagloy is still living, and that he
has been released from jail at the reqw
of the physicians. Ho is at the House
of Col. ltaiford. Mr. Murhy is reported
sinking fast.

The holidays have been npon us in fall
blast for the past three days. Immense
numbers of people, principally oolored,
have boon in town, giving at least the ap
pearance of business. The general ver
dict is, however, that outside of a small

A petition ia beiug extensively circu
lated and numerously »igued by onr citi-
sens asking the Legislature to repeal the
law putting the jail in charge of the
County Commissioners. Many signers of
this petition hays no doubt given their
signature without -examining into the
foots. Petitions signed by the publio
seldom express the publio's opinion, as
nine men out af ten will sign e petition
when solicited, never enquiring into the
merits or demerits of the petition. I
have, therefere, thought it best to prsssnt
few facts to our people that they may
see the great injury thoy will do our
ooanty in getting a repeal of this law.
Besides this petition is not for the benefit
of the people, but for the sole benefit of
one man, the sheriff. Now, our sheriff is
no doubt a very worthy man and a good
offloer, and he has a good ojjloe, but it
would be $2,000 to $3,000 a year better it
he can get oharge of the jail. As a tax
payer, I prefer the present plan. If the
sheriff thinks the office don’t pop without
the jail, he will not be foroed to keep it.
His term of office expires in January, and
there are many “pood men and true” who
will be glad to get the office for the pres
ent perquisites.
It ia a well known foot that the county
was heavily in debt when the Commis
sioners went into offioe. I believe about
$60,000. For two yeara taxes have been
burdensome to pay off ibis debt. Tbs jail
was one of the principal items of expense
The oouoty is now out of debt. Must we
be >o foolish as to re-enact our follies.
If we do, it will be but a few years henos
before we’ll find ourselves again groaning
under high taxes. Timas are hard, truly
hard. It behooves States, oounties and
oities, as well as individuals to adopt
rigid eoonotny. It iaa terrible souffle with
uiauy a poor widow and orphan to pay
their tales. They have no voica in this
matter. WiH the men of Musoogee, by
their petitioning the Legislature, cause
the repeal 8f a law that will result in the
oppression of so many and will benefit
only one man, the Sheriff, and he a strong
able bodied man with an offioe that with
out the Jail, ought to pay $2,000 to $3,000
per annum. The Commissioners hsvs
offered the Sheriff the position of jailor,
with ti^e salary, provided he wotld live at
the jail and take oharge of it; bnt ha re-
fqiea. My time being limited, I have not
gotten the figures as full and oomplete as
I would daoito. But sufficient, I think,
for this communication. I gain from the
Ordinary’s books that the oounty
paid the jailor tbs year befors the
Commissioners want into offioa
from November 1, 1871, to November 1,
1872, $4,810 50. Tbs Commissioners
took charge of the jail on November 1,
1872, and paid expenses for jail from
November 1, 1872, to November 1, 1873,
$1,433 84; from November 1, 1873, to
November 1, 1874, $1,780 08—a saving
the first yasr of $3,376 66; the second
year, $3,030 42.
In fact the expenses of the jail under
the control of Commissioners are about
ooe-third the amount as under the sys
tem proposed by this petition. Will our
people, koowing these faots, permit them
selves to be used to get a repeal of this
law? I will not believe it. Several gen
tlemen have informed ms that they gave
their* signature without knowing the
faot| believing it would not in
crease the burden on the county.
Others have said that they were under the
impression the Commissioners sanctioned
the petition, and knowing the Coininis-
aiouers to bo good men thoy were willing
to endorse them. Others signed without
reflecting, being solicited to A so, yet
a great mauy of our host citizens have re
fused, but their refusal carries no weight
as our Legislature will only see the peti
tion that is signed, unless a counter p#
titioo Is gotten up. The late grand jury
recommends the present plan. Won't
some active oitizen take bold of tbs mat
ter and have the wishes of Musoogee
county put before the Legislature ?

PLANS or THE INSURGENTS—WHAT THR
DIAIUO HAS TO SAT.
Havana, Deoember 26.—The IHario
says Honors Aldma and Aguilera havo pur.
chased two steamors for the purpose of
bringing flllibnsteriug expeditions to
Cubs. Gou. Jordan will return to the
island accompanied by Aguilera and the
formor wi'l assume chief command of the
Insurgents.
Tbe JHarin fnrthor states that Aldma and
bis companions intend to ra-estabiish the
Cuban Junta in New York, with the ob-
juct of regaining the influence and power
foriuotly bold by that body, and crcatiug
a situation in Cuba similar to that exist
ing in 1863, by the commission of all
possible depredations by tbs In
surgents. It says Captain General
Concha knows much mors of
the plans of tbe Iusurgeuts than what it
now publishes. It given publicity to the
foregoing because Concha dislikes myste
ries. Concha is resolved, an on former
occAHions, to combat tho enemies of Spain
everywhere.
A letter to the IHario reports that
strong efforts ara being made in Wash
ington to obtain the recognition of the
Cubans as belligerents. Tho letter couples
the uames of AMauia and Collector Casey
with these efforts, snd says tbe object is
to throw on the market the Cuban bonds
held iu Washington.
