Quarters of the public free school fund of
Dougherty county, which will be about
fS20*> for this year. The amount is regu

opportunities offered by the system. The
white population has never" seemed to
take much interest in the matter, os the
free schools opened in and continued
through the summer, a time when rest

children than a tew dollars towards edu-

A DISASTROUS FIRE. 5
Ni .irl) :i Million hol-nrs' ll'nrth of Priqifriv
Ib'-fri Hit til Chll'IlBU.
Chicago, May i’ll.—A disastrous lire oc
curred in n large brick and stone structure
nt the corner of Congress street mid Wa
bash avenue eavlv this morning. The loss i
will approximate .OOO.rsQO. Among the
principal losers are publishers Bel ford,
(.'lark ,t Co. and the large book bindery
firm of Donahue & He.'int berry, The
structure in which the fire originated is at 1
the northwest corner of tic- two thorough
fares and six stories in height. The first
alarm was turned in shortly before 5
o'clock, but before the arrival of any
fire steamers the flames burst
out of the building with such
fierceness as to insure the destruction
of the entire building and contents. In a
short time after the Mare was discovered
the building was; on fire from lop to bot
tom. It was filled with material of the
most Inflammable description. The occu
pants were Beltord, Clark & Co., publish-
err: Van Antwerp Bragg & Co., in the
same business: Itonuohue & Henucherrv,
hook hinders: R. II. Beale A Co., litho
graphers. and the C'< ntrnl I.ithogrnping
Co. Beltord. of Be)ford Clarke J: Co.,
places his les; at s.Vi'0,000, many valuable
plates being destroyed.
Next door was a five story building own
ed by A. A. Slaughter, and occupied by the
furniture film, of R. Iieimel & Co. This
firm was burned out a short time ago. and
was just going back, and had only a small
stock on band. Their loss will not exc- d

The most exciting part of the tire was a
panic which occurred among the guests of
the Hotel Brunswick, directly opposite the
burned block. The heat was so intense
every pane of glass ii the Wabash avenue,
front of the hotel was broken, and
the sashes and window frames
scorched. The guests became alarm
ed and without stopping to dress
themselves, fled from the hotel. The loss
by heat and water to the hotel is $50,000.
Capt. Joe Keution. truck No. 21. was seri
ously injured. In jumping from the truck
on arriving at the fire he fell, and a wheel .
of the truck passed over him. Both legs:
were broken one of them was so mangled
that ; t will have to be amputated. William
Langdon, truck No. 1. was badly cut on
the hands und right arm by falling glass.
John Brenu and Fireman O’Neil, both of
truck No, 1. were cut by falling glass. The
truck, which is a new one, was caught
under the falling Congress street wall and
