Dr. B. P. Bettinton, an Atlanta dentist,
has been adjudged a lunatic.
Cunning is excited over a threat to lynch
a negro boy who is in jail there for out
raging a little white girl.
An Atlanta man has telegraphed Mr.
Horn that he will give $100 toward locating
the school of technology in Macon.
Mr. Charles B. Martin died Wednesday
afternoon at the home of his mother, Mrs.
M. W. Martin, in Madison county.
Mr. Daniel Fargason, one of Henry
county’s oldest and best citizens, died
Wednesday at his residence in that
county.
Two mutes were married in Athens on
Wednesday. Because a woman can’t talk
it doesn’t prevent her using the broom
stick with vigor.
There is only about seven hundred dol
lars more to raise to make the seven thou
sand dollars to build the Marietta female
high school.
Upon revision of the ballots in the pri
mary election in Columbia county for clerk
and treasurer, the vote between Messrs.
Gray and Olive was found to be a tie, and
another election was ordered.
The convention at Cuthbert, after a num
ber of ballots, selected Mr. C. C. Taylor to
represent Randolph county in the next
general assembly.
Hands on the Dublin and Macon railroad
are off on a st rike on account of the failure
to receive pay. The contractors claim the
failure in the company, and the latter
claim that the contractors have failed in
the contract.
A meeting of the democracy of Bartow
county is called for the first Tuesday in
September, for the purpose of healing the
differences which exist in the party. It is,
supposed that the rival executive commit
tees will resign, and that the meeting will
elect a new one.
Miss Ella Walker, a very promising
young lady, after graduating at LaGrange,
last term, was visiting her relatives, Mr.
and Mrs. W. E. Coleman, at Millner, and
while there was stricken with typhoid
fever and died at their residence. •
B. F. Reynolds, a young Cincinnati drum
mer, had his throat cut about 10 o’clock
Thursday night at the Adams house, on
Wall street, in Atlanta, directly opposite
the Union passenger depot. The cutting
was done by Charles Waring, of Salisberry,
N. C.
At 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon Jose
D. Pares, book-keeper for Charles Greens,
Son & Co., at Savannah, dropped dead at
bis desk from heart disease. He was
Spanish consul for Georgia and South Car
olina, and was highly esteemed. He leaves
a wife and two children.
The coroner's jury convened to inquire
into the cause of the death of John O’Con- j
nor, at Gainesville, has adjourned sine die.
Some witnesses whom they deem impor- |
taut are on the “wing” and the investiga- I
tion ceases until they arc brought to the !
front. Thus far it seems that the murder j
is shrouded in mystery.
Considerable excitement was occasioned
in Savannah by the finding, early Thurs
day morning, of a human foot and the por
tion of an ankle on south Broad street.
The matter was investigated, but it is not
known how it came there. The supposi
tion is that it is a portion of a body dis
sected at the hospital and had been taken
off by a dog.
Thursday morning in Savannah, R. E.
Cobb, superintendent of the Coast Line
railroad, was dangerously cut in the left
side by Conductor John T. Taylor. The
difficulty occurred in the office at the ter
minus line. The superintendent censured
Taylor about the condition of his car,which
was not kept properly cleaned, and de
manded the duster that Taylor had m his
hand. Taylor refused, and Cobb attempt
ed to take it from him when a struggle en
sued and Taylor cut him. Physicians pro
nounce the injury very serious. Cobb was
conveyed home. Taylor is under arrest.

O. R. Prit^e, of Fminsdale, was in Selma
rhursday soliciting subscriptions for the
erection of a Presbyterian church in his
town.
Farmers around Midway,Bullock county,
report crops much better than was ex
pected three weeks ago. A few worms are
reported, but no harm is predicted.
There was on exhibition at the Cotton
Exchange in .Selma a stalk of corn which
had borne six ears. The corn was raised
in East Selma by Mr. M. L. Rogers, who
planted it as late as May 1st.
The laying of steel rails on the Alabama
Great Southern road is progressing rapid
ly. only about twenty miles of the old rail
now remaining between Birmingham and
Meridian.
Governor John Ireland, of Texas, passed
through Birmingham Wednesday night en
route to Washington. He was in the spe
cial car of Receiver Sheldon, of the fSew
Orleans division of the Texas Pacific, who
accompanied him.
The Pettus Rifles have presented their
sponsor, Miss Belle Siddons ? formerly or
^elma, now of Faunsdale, with a beaut iiul
Third Regiment badge, bearing the initials
of the company and the letter of its assign
ment in the regiment.
Around Perote the crops are considered
low the average, the corn crop being
poor, but cotton is doing tolerably

Newton Nash Clements, jr., son of Col.
N. Clements, died at Tuscaloosa Ihurs-
y morning of typhoid fever. He was a

Mrs. Powhatan Lockett, who was killed
ar Brenham, Texas, a few days ago by
e derailing of cars, was the wife of
dge Lockett, who once lived in Mont-
niery. After the death of her husband,
rich occurred at that place, Mrs. Lockett
en moved to Marion, at which place
e taught school.
Mr. J. E. Hargrove, who resides near the
athews cotton mills in Selma, tells the
[lowing which is a strange happening,
which he is willing to swear. Said he .
had on both my eyes cataracts of the
nature - Prominent physicians said
that they would necessarily have to be re
moved with the knife. I by accident found,
however, that every time I looked 'at the
electric lights my eyes would burn seven -
ly, but the same time I could the more I
looked see better. This I kept «up mriil

aside.

General Abe Sawyer is a candidate for

A man and family arrived iu DeFuniuk
Springs last week, who came there in a
wagon from Dakota.
The shedding of cotton and the appear
ance of caterpillars is reported from Pine
Hill, Bradford county.
A large addition is to be made to the
Hotel Seville, at Seville, Fla. A school
house is also to be built.
Almost the entire orango crop in and
about DeLand, and in Orange county, will
be “rusty” this year. Rusty oranges
bring 25 cents per box more in some
markets than bright ones.
Commodore Stewhard, oEDaytona, while
going out in a boat from Port Orange to
Panee’s Park, August 12, came across some
fishermen who were towing fish when a
big shark attempted to help himself to
them. The commodore happened to have
a celebrated Boston shot gun on board
loaded with buck-shot, whose contents
soon settled his hash. It was a regular
man-eater and weighed over 900 pounds.
A man named Penaker was killed nt
Yalaha last week by one Gold. The kill
ing was the result of an old feud between
the two men, but the shooting seems to be
regarded as unjustifiable. The shot was
tired from a pistol, the bullet entering the
victim’s abdomen, penetrating the bladder
and almost severing the bowels in several
places, as was shown by a post-mortem ex
amination. He survived, however, until
Wednesday. Gold was arrested and
placed under a $500 bond.

The Chattanooga Times says an old lady
came into one of the stores of Sparta a
short time since, when the merchant, an
old gentleman, bowed to her very politely
and asked her if lie could sell her some
