Not a great while since, Judge Lump
kin was organizing the superior court in
Madison county. The court was delayed
by n search for a Bible upon which* to
swear the jury. The judge beenme vexed
and in a rather short wav said; “Balin', go
out and buy a Bible.” “B-b-b-but, judge,
there ain’t nary Bible in this town,” quick
ly answered the frightened official.
The Savannah and Western railway has
perfected a temporary organization by the
election of n board of directors, with P. W.
Meldrim, President, Herman Myers,Secre
tary and Treasurer. The road has a char
ter allowing them to run through Bryan,
Effingham, Tatnall, Montgomery and other
counties in proximity to county seats con
necting with the East Tennessee, Georgia
and Virginia at Eastman.
There lives in Lumpkin county a
preacher, whose wealtli is estimated at
|2000, uni yet he allows Ids mother to be
placed on the poor list of the county, and
is absolutely careless to the want's and
necessities of this aged one who should be
the dearest to his heart, and even allows 1
her to wander from one place to another i v,.,j
in search of a home. The man claims to >■'
be a Methodist preacher, and is known to
live well and have plenty.
A gentleman from Madison county says
that Seagraves, the white youth who killed
a little negro on Dr. Simpson’s place has
not yet been captured, and is thought to
have made good his escape. The dead boy
was reared by and bound to Dr. Thompson,
who thought a great deal of him. That
gentleman is outraged at the killing, and
says he wiil lind young Seagraves and
bring bill! injustice if bo is in Georgia. He
is taking every step possible to this end.

the killing, ami indignant at the sheriff.
They say that Seagraves was in his father’s
house while that officer was in search of
him, and lie knew it. lint would not cuter
to take him.
