iioTv ben purtle got mid
WIPE.
The very climax of ugliness was Ben Pin
tle. Ho was red haired and each hair stood
as if it cherished the supremest contempts
for its next neighbor, llis face waB freckled
as the most bcspotted guinea egg. His nose,
supported at the bridge, a huge hump, while
the end turned viciously, to one side. His
mouth had every shape bat a pretty one-—
His form was uncouth as his face was ugly.
The very climax of ugliness was Ben Pur-
ilc—what was more still, Ben had a hanti-
soioo, bouncing, blooming wife—such as
can only be grown upon a country farm.
How the deuce, said I to Ben one day,
did you ever get such a wife, you uncouth,
mishappen, quintessence of monstrosity 1
Ben was not at all offended by the imper
tinence of my question, and forthwith pro
ceeded to solve the mystery thus :
'Well, now gals what's sensible ain't cotch
by none of your purty aud hifalutin airs.—
I’ve sued that tried more’n once. You know
Kate was alters considered the puniest gal
in these parts, and all the young tellers in
the neighborhood used to try to cotch her.
Well, I used to go over to old Sammy’s too,
just to kinder look on, you know, and cast
sheep’s eyes at Kate. But Lord sakes ! I
had no more thought that I could get Kate
than that a Jerusalem cricket could hide in
the hair that wasn’t on old Sammy’s bald
bead—no sir-ee. But still I couldn’t help
going on, my heart would kinder flutter, and
my ears would burn all over whenever I’d
go to talk to Kate. And one day when Kate
sorter made fun of me like, it almost killed
me suro. I went home with somethin like
a rock jostlin about in my breast, and swore
I’d hang myself with the firs* plow lino I
found.
Did you hang yourself, I asked ’
No, dady blazed out at me lor not taking
old Ball to the pasture in the morning and
scared me so bad I forgot it.
Go on, said 1, seeing Ben pause with ap
parent regret that be had not executed his
vow.
Well, soon one Sunday morning [ I reck
on it was about a year after the hanging
scrape] I got up and scraped my face with
dady's old razor, and put on my new copp’-
rus britches and a new linscy coat mammy
had dyed with sasafrac bark, and other fix-
rns, and went over to uncle Sammy’s. Now,
I'd got to loving Kate liko all creation, but
1 had nevor chcaped to anybody about my
toolings. But I know’d I wsb on the right
aide of the old folks.
Woll, now, ain’t it quar, continued Ben,
after a slight pause, during which ho rolled
his quid to a more convenient place in his
mouth, how a feller will feel sometimes 1—
Something seemed to say as 1 went along,
Ben Purtle, this is a great day for you, and
then my heart jumped and fluttered like a jay
bird in a trap. And when I got thar and
seed Kate with her new checked homespun
frock on, I raily thought 1 should take the
blind staggers any bow.
Ben paused again to brush the fog from
his eyes, and then continued:
Well, T found the order of the day was a
muscadine hunting. Joe Sharp and his two
sisters, aud Jim Boles war thar. I’d know’d
a long time that Joe Sharp was right after
Kate ; and I hated him wus than a hog hates
to fiud the way out of a tater patch; but I
didn’t let on. Sharp had on white britches
and fine shoes, and broadcloth coat, but ev
erybody know’d he wasn’t worth a red cent.
He walked with Kale, and you ought to
seen the airs lie put on. It was Miss Katy
this, and Miss Katy that, and all such non-
senee. After u while we came to a slough
whar wc had to cross on a log—I'd a notion
to pitch the sassy good for nuthing into the
water.
Why didn’t you, 1 asked, sympathizing
with the narrator.
Stop, never mind, said Ben, giving me a
nudge. Providence done all that up brown.
Nothing would do but Joe Sharp must lead
Miss Kato across first. He jumped on ths
log in high glee, and took Kate's hand and
•ff they put. Jist as they got half way a-
I'Ajhs, a tarnation big bull frog jumped off
<( ? the water—you know how they holler—
Vt'nake I screamed the blasted fool, and jump-
'rd back and knocked Kate off up to her waist
in the nasty, black, muddy water. And
what d’ye think ho done ? Why run back- '
srds and forards a hollering for a pole to help j
Kato out of the water. Kate looked at me
and I couldn’t stand it no longer. C’urelmg! j
1 lit ten foot from the bank at the first jump, I
and had Kate out of thar in no time. And j
d'ye think the scamp didn’t come up allot,
we'd got out, and sav'd ; Ar you hurt Miss
Katy t
My dandor was up. I e -uldn't stand in.
I cotch him by the seat of his white hrilvhcc
and hie coat collar and o,n a loan. Maybe
he didn't go clear under when he hit the
water. I didn’t see him out. Me and Kato
put for the house. When we started off
Hate and t l
Ben, jist let me hold on to your arm, my
knees feel sorter week.
Gepeat jemmy! I felt so quar when she tuck
bold. I tried to say something nice, but my
dratted mouth wouldn’t go off no bow. But I
was strong as an elephant, and helped Kate a-
long. Bimhy Knteflftid:
Ben, that Joo Sharp’s a good for nothing t
sneakin, cowardly nobody; and ef he ever putt
bis bead inside oar house again I'll souse him 1
with dish water sure.
I tried to say something again, but cubs the
luck, I couldn’t say nothing, but squeezed
Kate's bond and Bigbed like a cranky belhis.
We’d got clean out of sight of the others,
and Kata Bays:
Ben, I fell that you’ro my protect or, and I
believe daddy's right when be says you're
worth all the rest of the boys in tbe neighbor
hood.
Ben Purtle, says I, this is u grea* day for
you,' and I made a tremendous effort to get
my inouth off again, and out it popped sure
enough:
Kate, says I, tembling ail over, I love you
to distraction, and no w istake. I've loved j ou
long aud bard. My heart's beon almost broke
for two years; and now I want you to 6ay right
straight up and down whether you're going to
have me or not?
Kate hung down her bead and didn't gay
uothing. but I feit encouraged, for she kiuder
sighed. Says 1, Kate, ef you're gwinc to have
me, say so and ef you don’t want to say so, jist
squeeze my band.
Well, she squeezed my baud right off.—
Lordy, how I did feel. 1 felt jist tike a stream
of warm water or saasafac tea sweetened with |
molasses, was running through my bones! aud ,
jist cotch her in my arms, and kissed her right I
in tbe inouth and she never tried tbe first time I
to get loose.
Ben was so overcome with this narration of
his courtship, that a pauso for breath was ne
cesiary.
How long alter that, said I, before you were
married!
Old Sammy was mighty proud, aud so waa
the old 'omen, about the thing and wc married
next fall after the muscadine scrape.
Do yon think your wife loves you ytt ’ I
asked
'Why, lordy, yes. She thinks I’m the pur-
ticstaud best feller in the world. I tell you,
sir, it’s no use talking; high falutin airs, and
quality dressing and colone and such things
ain't a gwine to go down with sensible gals
sure.
