ATLANTA, AUGUST 13,1857.
The LH|«I Blent In the World.
Some weeks ago we gave a few facts in re
gard to the weight and dimensions of Miles
Darden, who died in Tennessee, and was
•aid to be the largest man in the world. The
Jackson IF/it'g has the following additional
particulars of the deceased, fnrnished by Rev.
John Brooks :
“Lie was twice married. His children are
very large, but probably none of them will
ever lie more thau half the weight of their fa
ther. He was quite active and lively, and la
bored until about four years ago, when lie be
came so fleshy that he was compelled to stay
at home, or be hauled about in a two horse
waggon.
“In 1829 he made a contract with a tailor
to furnish him a suit of clothes for fifty dol
lars—the cloth was to cost five dollars per
yard. Upon measurement it took twelve
yards of cloth. So the tailor lost ten dollars
, end the making. The tailor states that three
men, each weighing over two hundred pounds,
put the coat on, buttoned it around them and
w#Iked across the square at Lexington. In
i855 it took tb 'teen and onc-half yards of
flax-cloth, yard wide, to make him a coat. It
took sixteen yards of cambric for his shroud ;
twenty-four yards of black velvet to cover the
sides and lid of his coffin; one hundred and
twenty-five feet of plank to make his coftin.
“His coffin was eight feet long ; across the
breast thirty-two inches; across the head
eighteen inches; across the foot fourteen inch
es : ita depth thirty-five inches. He weighed
in 1844 eight hundred and seventy-one pounds.
His height was seven feet six inches, llis
weight when he died, as nearly as could be as
certained, was a fraction over one thousand
pounds.”
A Dutch Jutlicc.— 1 May it please the court,’
said a Yankee lawyer before a Dutch Jus
tice the other day, 1 this ia a case of great
importance; while the American eagle
whose sleepless eye watches over the wel
fare of this mighty republic, and whoso
wings extend from the Alleglianies to the
Rocky chain of the West, was rejoicing in
his pride of palace—'
‘Shotpdare! 1 say, vat has dis suit to
do mit eagles 1 Dis line notion to do niit de
wild bird. It is von sheep.’ exclaimed the
justice.
‘ True, your honor; but my client has
rights.’
‘ Yer glient has no right to de eagle.’
‘ Of course not: but the laws of lan
guage—’
‘ What cares I for de laws of language,
eh ! I understand de laws of de State, and
dat ish enough for me. Confine -our talk j
to de case.’
‘Well, then, my client, the defendant in 1
this case, is charged with stealing a sheep,
and—’
‘ Dat vil do! dat vil do! Youa glient,
charged mit stealing a sheep, jes nine shil-
lin. The gourt vil adjourn."
Touching Incident or Fraternal
Love,
We have never read a more touchingly
beautiful incident than the following, which
occurred a short timi since in one of the
French courts. The natural nobility of the
brother, and the affectionate faith of the sis
ter, arc examples worthy to be followed by
the unfortunate youth of our own, or any other
country, as an evidence that however dark the
the day, an honest heart and a firm resolve
will overcome the greatest obstacles.
A French paper says that Lucille Rome, a
pretty girl, with blue eyes and fair hair, poorly
but neatly clad, was under the charge of va
grancy.
"Does any one claim you? asked the mag
istrate.
Ah I my good sirsaid she, hi have no
longer any friends; my father and mother are
dead—I have only my brother James, but he
is as young os 1 am. Oh, sir! what can he
do for me V
"The Court must send you to the House of
Correction.’
“Here 1 am sister; here 1 am do not fear !"
ried a childish voice from the other end of
he Court. And at the same instant a little
*ioy with lively countcnence started forth
} from amid the crowd, and stood before the j
Judge. ;
“Who are yon ?’’ said he.
!'James Rome, the brother of litis poor lit- |
tie girl." v |
“Your age?"
“Thirteen."
“And what do you want?"
“I come to claim my Lucille.”
But have you the means of providiug for
her
“Yesterday I had none, but now 1 hare.
Don't be afraid."
•'O, how good you are, James 1”
"Well, let ns see, my boy," said the magis
trate. “The Oourt is disposed to do all that
it can for your sister, but you mint, give us
some explanation." '
“About a fortnight ago, Sir," exclaimed
tlwUsy," my pwr uigtlicr died of a Dad
cough, for it was very cold at home. We
were in great trouble. Then I said to my
self, 1 will become an artisan, and when I
know a good trade I will support my sister.
I went apprentice to a brush maker. Every
day I used to carry her half of my dinner, and
at night I took her secretly to my room, and
she slept on my bed, while 1 slept on the loor.
But it appears that she had not enough to eat.
One day she begged on the Boulevard, and
was taken up. Whoa I heard that I said to
myself’ come, my boy, thingB cannot last so;
you must find something better. 1 soon found
a good place where I am fed and clothed, and
have twenty francs a month. I have also
found a good woman who, for these francs
will take care of Lucille, and teach her nce-
d lework. I claim my Bister.’
“My boy, ’ said the Judge, “your conduct
is very honorable. However, your sister can
not lie set at liberty till to morrow.’’
“Never mind, Lucille," said the boy."!
will come and fetch you early to morrow ’ I
may kiss her,may 1 not, Sir?"
He then threw himself into the arms of his
sister, and both wept warm tears of alTeciion.
Negro Di/uaUti/.—The Ohio Stale Jour
nal is in favor of
Letting negroes vote I
Letting them sit onjurie I
Letting them hold offices !
And in favor of negro equality I
In a recent article, The Journal shadows
the future position of the ‘ Republican’ par
ty on the question of negro equality and so
cial privileges ; it says:
1 We believe the negro is human—he has
a soul I—lie has an intellect—and so far as
the right of suffrage, or any other right of
citizenship is concerned, he should be placed
on an equality with the rest of mankind.’
The faith of the Journal is apparently
strong, hut unfortunately for its stability it
is not fully supported either by scienco, his
tory or revelation.
Poisoned Whiskey.—The Lebanon Ohio
•Star records the death of four men from
drinking whiskey with stryvehnine in it.
It also says that tens of thousands of fish
in the stream below tire distillery have died.
Two tons of dead fish have been taken out,
a mill race being literally choked with them,
