MACON, G^A.
Jo! fiol ? Who finally has ever recreated him
• off betttr in any public carden than iu the
park** of Madrid ? Yes, the parks of Madrid.
C befe are lhr*--e of these public walks, the to-
Prado, nearly two mile* in length, from
north to south, on the eastern outskirts of
■ ho city, with superb and regular rows of
'.ree-J uod »cver.tl fountains of surpass
ing beatify ; the Pasos - de las Pelicia.s,
-’or.^ the banks of the Manzanares, op tue
w< st side of the city, and the Buen Retiro
.mrdwBo to the east, beyond the Prado. With
out these tnree gardens, it fe safe to assert,
:te iu Mad) id would almost be intolerable :
tod none of the monarebs of the unfortunate
:bemn peninsula, not even those who seemed
*o take a special delight in oppressing their
people, ever ventured t> iuteifere with the
Inhabitants oi Madrid, enjoying themselves
a their pc cul'ftr manner in these three pub-
do resorts. But these guldens you must
never visit iu the day time. Then cvery-
bing looks deserted, the trees and plants
hftDg their leaves under the depress
ing influence <f a pitiless sun;
vho very grass on the lawns
looks yellow ana droopiDg, and in the ponds
ha water, receding as it is alwajs, is covered
with a green film, indicative of sluggishness
a ad stagnation Pedestrians you do not meet
anywhere; only now and then a lazy waiter
lolling in front of a restaurant, whom you
must call five times before be will answer jon
with a “Si, Sew!'* At the end of a fifteen
minutes’ walk, you will ask youvsAf in sur
prise, * Is this the famous Prado? ’ He who
would dare to compare it with the Parisian
Lois de Boulogne, with Hyde Park in Lon
don, thi Prater iu Vienna, or the Thiergar-
ten in Berlin, would absolutely appear to
yon an idiot. But wait until the bells of
he innumerable churches of Madrid have
rung their vespers, and wait until tho fiery
;un has sunk behind the bleak crests of the
Sierra Guadaiama, and until tbc myriads of
skirs. with wonderful clearness, sparkle in
tho deep bluo southern sky; wait until then,
und you will find a new, a most enchanting
and fascinating life in the Prado. The balmy
.light air seems to iufas-e fresh vitality into
‘he sluggish blood of the hidalgos. They
hasten to their beloved park, and long brfore
.) o’clock it is thronged with the beauty and
fashion cf the capital. Poets have often
tiling of the charms of the lair daughters of
Madrid. If you want to admire them in all
ibeir surpassing grace, if you want to bask your
♦.yes in the dark depths cf orbs lustrous
and unfathomable, and niched with magnifi
cent brows, just saunter through those alleys
9f the Prado, and lookar.d listen, such sylph-
like forms, such faultless contours, such
sweet accents of one of the- noblest tongues
that Providence has given to mankind. But
do not believe that only the aristocracy of
Madrid is to ba found of evenings in the
dark, delightful recesses of the Prado. The
plebians are there likewise, and the beautiful
and characteristic costumes ol the working
girls, who still adhere to the mantilla aud the
reboze, lend a special charm to the ani
mated scene. Aud O the delights of
i.ho great pond! No city in the woild
if: more destitute of water tbau Madrid, and
the pleasures of yatehiog aud sailing are
unknown to the Madrilenos. It is only the
mirmr-like surface of the grand pond of the
Prado that they can cr.joy a boat*ride of over I
1,000 yards in length. It costs money to |
outer one of the famous baiqnes, and those j
whose poverty prevents them trom riding on I
the watery deep can buy, lor a penny or two,
nseat on the estrade, where hundreds ol
spectators least their eyes upon tbo>>e who,
more fortunate than themselves, navigate on
the only decent sheet of water iu New Castile.
For three or four hours the scene in the
Prado is animated. The rich and the poor
congregate there as if the society’ of Madrid
vero the most democratic in the world. That
old gentleman, with n lovely blonde gill on
his arm, ia the Maiquis de Medina-Sidoni, in
whose viens flows thi blood alike of the an
cient grandees of Spain and of the Moorish
kings of Granada. The handsome young
fellow who passes him is Senor Escnv.az, the
president ol the International of Madrid.
At that round table siis General Daniel
Sickles, the ambassador of the United States.
The tall, bald gentleman, who jokes
with him, and who for the world looks
like grim old Bismarck, is no other than
Emilio Caste liar, the foremost orator of Eu
rope, and the noblest patriot of his own
country. And then there is music, not Span-
