THE ST. LOUIS MUTUAL LIFE.
Toihk Enrron* or the Herald:
We are very much surprised st the dispatch in this
morning’s Herald from your agent at Macon, stating
that the 8t. Louis Mutual Life Insurance Company
was broke, and sundry policy holders at Macon would
lose what they had paid, Ac., when in your paper tS
the 10th inst. we published a dispatch from Mr. Lewis,
the President, in reply to one to him, that the Com
pany was solvent, and that injunction would be re
moved. Does your agent st Macon know more about
the Company than Die President and Directors ? Is
asking an injunction which was temporarily granted
any evidence that a company is bankrupt? It is time
enough when the injunction is granted permanently,
and a redever appointed to assert the company is broke,
not before, and should the company resume business,
aa we believe it will, your agent will luve asserted what
was not true, and will have damaged, so far as he and
yonr paper could a company that Las paid over two bun*
dred and fifty thousand dollars at this agency to wid
ows and orphans. Knowing you aa well as we do, we
do not suppose for a moment you would bend your*
selves to such work with the intention of doing ua or
the company we represent an injury, and hope you
will call the attention of your agent and onr policy
holders to o:r card in your paper of the 10th inst.
Very respectfully,
Ja*. E. Godfrey k .Son,
State Agents.
As your coli ran > tre ever open to the cause of right
and you are evi r willing to bear an honest expression
of opinion in all matters pertaining to the best inter
ests of the people, I desire, in the interest of a ma
jority cf the working men, to speak a word in behalf
of oar generous and popular candidate from the Fifth
Ward, Mr. M. T. Simmons.
Tc say that Mr. Simmons Is thoroughly qualified
would be but a mild argument in bis behalf, as many,
and in fact, nearly all, the gentlemen whose names are
before us, possess enough of mother wit to fill the
position creditably; but if we are to be i overned by
other and more requisite qualities, such as a thorough
identity with the best interests cf the city, possessing
a knowledge sufficient to bring his feelings and Lis
aid to bear in onr behalf, a generosity and manliness
in business; that will insure unanimity, and a broad
charity tLat would give to all without any stingy ward
provisions, then we claim for Mr. Simmons.

The following poetry was written by request, and

There was a little girl,
And she ha I a little curl.
Right in the middle of her forehead;
When ehe was good.
She was very, very good,
And when &ke was l*ad she war horrid.
She went up stairs,
And her parent, unawares,
Was looking out of the window:
She stood on her head,
in her little trundle-bed.
And nobody nigh to hinder.
Her mother heard the noise,
And she thought it was the boys
A playing in the empty attic:
But she ran up stairs,
And caught her unawares.
And spanked her most emphatic.

It was said that the engine which killed Mr. Green
was going backward at a rate of speed not less than
three or four miles an hour—much too fast and reck
less, in our opinion, for the welfare of our citizens.
This statement was made to us by Mr. Buchart, who
happened to be on the ground and wUneseed the ac

he denies this, aniP says that they were not going
