Correspondence of the Courier-Journal.

There is much sympathy in Tennessee po

and all accumulated honestly. Forty years
in the public service, and never stole any

mostly saved from his salary of twenty-five
thousand a year. He did not entertain nig

personal expenses; and the fact that he could
save sixteen or eighteen thousand a year from
his salary, gives the lie to the assertions of
the partisans of President Grant that a man
can not live comtortably in the Presidential
office on a salary of twenty-five thousand a
year. It should be remembered, too, that
the “contingent expenses” of the White House
are about twenty thousaud a year higher un

He can never reach the desired goal, for no
Legislature that can be elected in Tennes

Senate. Neither do I believe that by any
possibility he cao be elected to the Governor-

MEETING TO-NIGHT.
But can the Democrats be brought to the
support of Johnson, yon may ask, sufficiently
to give him the nomination? They can; for
without the Johnson men, no Democrat can
be elected to a general office in Tennessee.
They hold the balance of power. They dem-

THE SENATORIAL RACE.
There will be a great straggle over the Sen-
atorship next year. There will bo about a
dozen aspirants, each one with some chances
of success. The Johnaon men will, of course,
be cn hand with*“their man,” and he may be
the long pole that will knock tbe persimmons
although the chances are against him. Tbe
only way he could be elected would be for
the Johnson men arid Republicans to unite.
On that plan they might put A. J. through.
