Hebert Austin and his family lived on a
farm on the Waconda prairie. This farm was ] —
owned by Mrs. Austin, purchased from her
brother, out cf money inherited from her J
iather’s estate. Austin, it is said, desired to
possess himself of this farm, and used all en-
«i»'f»vors to have it transferred to his name.
Airs. Austin resisted, expressing her belief
that Austin would desert her and the children
if she consented. The statement goes oa to
.harge, that failing to attain his ends in
*hi3 particular, Austin determined to
murder his wife and so obtain possession of
the land in that way. His leaving home on
Friday to go to the Fair was merely a pre-

thi; point, there is no conflict between
the two statements, but Irom this the two
reports are wide as the poles apart
.lijah Haley was a young man whom Austin
had employed to superintend the farm during
".ir absence. Hearing the noise cf Austin’s
entrance, by the ontside door, which was evi
dently not the nsnil mode ot entrance, Haley
arose from his own bed in an adjoining room
and passed into Mrs. Austin’s bed chamber,
where Austin was concealed in the darkness,

Haley reached the centre of the room, Austin
Voce and fired three shots. A moment after- .
-.r.is, Mrs. Austin, dreadfully shattered and i
. ;rn in a vital part lay, dreadfully dying, I
and Elijah Haley, the young farm superin-;
tendent, lay stone dead, with a load of shot j
in him. The statement has it that Austin im-.
mediately sent for the relatives of his I
dying wife, and his neighbors, and “assumed
the role of the injured husband.” He at-1
tended closely by the dying woman, who I
mast have suffered exernciationg agony for j
those five lingering hours of life, and frus-1
(rated all opportunity oa her part to make a
statement. A11 that she said was, just before
slie died, “Ob, Mr. Austin, why didn’t you
kill me outright and save me this awlul ago-
uy?” Well might she say so ! In any event,
whichever of these two statements may be
correct, well may she have said, “Why not
kill me ontright to save me this awful agony ?”
Mrs. Austin is reported by this statement
to have been devotedly attached to her bus-
hind, but opposed to his possessing himself
of the property, for the reasons previously
given. She is also repo: ted to have expressed
a fear that Austin would kill her about it.

The Rf.vexge of the Bakings.—The Bar
ings, unless men cl very superior mold, must
have taken grim satisfaction in the failure of
the two bankers to which our government
recently committed the business which their
own house had done for eighty years. The
American community, however, cannot be
expected to see anything very entertaining in
tbe spectacle. It not only does not help the
national credit, but it does tend to bring the
national mode of doing business into disre
pute, to see the houses chosen deliberately by
the administration for the transaction tor its
foreign business go rattling down among the
very foremost in a stock panic. As we
pointed out at the time it was made, in terms
which many people thought too severe, the
change was.’certainly as regards Mr. Clews, a
political job. Mr. Clews appeared on the
surface as a banker only nine or ten years
ago, an 1 he has always been as much of a
' ’worker” us a banker.
It was to reward him for his political ser
vices that the government business was given
him, or.in other words, instead of the bankers’
credit drawing the government balance the
balance was given to help the credit, and the
natnral result has followed. It was carious
and illustrative that Tom Murphy should
have appeared on the scene immediately after
the failure, and announced that “be would
not have had it happened for $5,000,” and
that Senator Morton should have declared
that “Henry's failure was tbe hardest blow
(he President had had yet." We trust it was
very hard; would that it might confine every
politician in the country to his bed for two
j—■jibs, and that it might induce “Henry" to
let “th e party” alone, and occupy him-
bis private business.—77,t Nation.
