recently announced, write ns as follows:
Our trip so far as weather was concerned,
was a remarkably favorable one, the cctton
crop orery where is an aver.ge good one.
But few planters are dissatisfied with the
yield, bat fewer still, notwithstanding that,
have a disposition to sell ro ton at present
rates. In every instmee where it is possible,
they will nnqaestionably bold on lor better
oricee. Merchants, however, to whom plan-
te.a hro (three-fourths at any rate of them)
indebted to, wbi s'- s ill willing as in
the past to accommodate them, are
not lorgetfal of their own obligations
to the manufacturer or dealer to whom he
may bo indebted, and no matter what the
price of cotton, be has to have money to meet
his liabilities, and after extending all reason
able accommodation to tbe producer, wheu
the demands on him becooio pressing and
numerous, he is no longer going to interpose
the planter's plea of two loo prices for cotton.
.Ho, no. He is going to collect, even if he is
necessitated to inoar costs, and in addition
sacrifice tbe patronage of the planter. This
he must do of necessity, in order to maintuin
his oan credit and commercial standing.
To the planter this may appear rather a se
vers line Of argument; bnt unless they dis
pose ot at least as much cotton as will pay
their debts, they will find it only too true.
Besides, for one moment let them consider
that withholding that out of which.they are
bound to pay tbeir just .obligati one amounts
to repudiation to a sufficient txient to pro
duce a general want of confidence, and the
time is not far distant when one conld hardly
trust his neit door neighbor, should they not
do as they have agreed to. There appears to
be but oa? alternative, viz: for the producer to
sell at least as much cotton as wilt liquidate
bis Iiabilit.es, and if he prefers not tu incur
further obligations in the|tmure, as mocb for
cash as will insure him i.idepemleuce by buy
ing such goods as he may require until next
cotton season wherever he chooses for cash.
This eonrse he won hi fiud in one year, not
only n rrnre independent but a more advan
tageous one. for who does not know that the
rule is, to be able to bny ch-ap-r for ca-b
than on credit, beddes there are but few mfr-
chants who would hesitate abont a lowing
pretty good discount for oush, instead of which
under the preseut system of “plan.ers fb.an
cierinj," the planter is generally necessitated
to pay rather a higher raie of interest on
every dollar of credit he takes.
Borne planters say in reply to snch au argu
ment that such a course could not be pm sued,
from tbo very fact that if they were to sell
their cotton at present prices, in order to pay
their debts, the cotton would not reauze
enough to do ih Such men might cons st-
cn*tyt»e considered simply “cumbertrs of the
ground," nnd their response only proves the
fact that they have either too much land un
cultivated, or, that they do not display suffi
cient industry in tilling that which is in prop
er state of cultivation. Poveriy then is the
only plea, and to such, io a word, let it be
whispered, that indcstbx paoDOcss wevlt h
