Wc continually hear tho question asked, by

attention is strongly nnd anxiously directed to

, dependent of those brilliant stars in the consld
lations of Thalia and Melpomene, the sprightly
i and fascinating Miss Rock, and the brilliant, tin

not have an opportunity of seeing these highly
- popular actresses in uur city, ore they depart
i' from the South?

“The greatest actress of tho day,” and eke,
“the greatest wonderoflhu age," “herolei han

; smallest actor, Master Burki, arc “astonishing
the natives” in N. York,—the latter at tho Park

she made her first appearance in that city, on
tho 10th wist, “with rapturous mid astounding

Was.” Let actors and actresses generally,
(particularly the latter) “hide their diminished
heads” before their great rival, “this gifted fe
male” and “accomplished actress,” who infi

everything hut speak.” Our quotations are from
the “hill us the play.”

Lawless pecking.
The reader is not to infer fiom the peculiarity
ofthe above head, that it alludes to anything
like /wnlatioii; tho' our contemporary of the
Macon Telegraph, intimates that tho Vick case,
to which it alludes, will probably cost the nation
a bushel of money; and others think it quite a
/.airless affair, on both sides—without moaning,
however, that both aides have acted unlawfully.
But tho pertinacity with which the ptckntr at
Vfth contend that in; is guilty of s moot peccant
oilenCc, and are answered that it is a ntcr* per
i> addlo, arising from the ytcreabilily of human na
ture, and that its author is shielded by the j tec
-1 toral of integrity, sufficiently indicates that it is a
vo y prr/.able question—one which both parties
may peek at even longer yet, without reaching
, the tuc core, ami which may he decided at last,
by very unfair measure. For our own pari, how
, ever Ltielcssjt may seem lo say so, wo think
! the measure under examination was a very
had one; and thu' it may he all-sufficient lo mete
out unto others, the measure they mote unto ns,
, yet in this case wo would pay Hta oflendcrhl his
! own coin, and return it twofold. And yet, lest
i by giving an inch lo such lawless measurers of
j the law, they should he caller lake an ell, wo
1 would have him confined closely to short moa
, i su «, fir a long time, not only for the purpose
, of laying down a standard for the use of others,
I but to take the scales from his eyes, and shew
