We understand that Wm. C. Micoc, Esq. has
been appointed Postmaster in this City, m place
of James Frassr, Esq. esigned.
FRANKLIN COLLEGE.
.‘ Our corvcsponclent slates as a fact, that "each
student when he enters is compelled lo make,
not simply a promt/e, which is all that the law
non that sulijoet requires—but a solemn oath lo
keep every jot and tittle of the laws, which oath
is administered hy the President with more so
lemnity, more form and ceremony, At an 1 ever
witnessed in a Con tof Justice.” d ins is wrong
and should bo corrected. Oaths are too com
mon in our country, and it is clearly had policy
to urge them upon the young and inexperienced.
It were belter lo rely upon the honor of our in
genuous youth, than to bind their consciences
liv solemn obligations lo infract which there are
so many inducements and temptations.”
We copy tho above aragraph from an article
in the Constitutionalist es yesloiday, common
ting on an offered article of a correspondent, in
relation to Franklin College ! and do so for the
nurpose of expressing our decided npprobatiuti
ol the entiarenta expressed by the editor on tho
yu*’i'i tof administering o Hu to the slndei.ts. —
‘‘O phs arc," indeed, "too common in this coun

tant, when they will he ahohshed ahogethor, ns
'inconsistent with good solicy and sound morali
ty. Os tins, however, wc will speak more lolly
nt a future lime; and fo r the present, confine
ourselves to a c.uaHiioiil on the Sound doctiineol
our contemporary, that "it. is clearly had policy
To mge them upon the young and iucxpeiienc
cd.” The oaths alluded to are of a prospective
nature, and therefore infinitely the more dan
gerous and impolitic. Ono may swear with
ramie degree of safety as to the past , hut who
iiha’l mark down his unseen -pathway through
the f dare, & swear to adhere toit,hy that Being
xvh’i.-e exclusive ullnhutcs ho thoughtlessly as
suines ! The past and the present only, belong
to man—the future to God; and who shall pre-
Tumptuously attempt totako from Him,that pow
er which belongs lo Him alone ? Can even the
ngod, the wise, the prudent, temperate, cool
headed, and considerate, say what a single day
will bring forth! and if not, how can tho enthu
siastic, hot-headed, wild, and inexperienced
youth,he expected lo do this—and to sweat upon
such a principle —perhaps, even hcfoic he tally
comprehends the true nature of an oath, in its
Various relations tu society, lohimsidt, and to his
■Creator? —If the fact be, as staled in the Consti
tutionalist, it is indeed "urong, and should ho
corrected."

Sieep in a certain room that had remained unoc

who was reported to have been murdered in
that room some years before.—“ Very well,”
® said tho man, “Em not afraid of ghosts; take
care of my horse and got ntc some supper."—
„*! After having refreshed himself, he enquired of
j die landlord how, and in what manner, the room,
in which ho was to lodge, was haunted. The
'f A landlord replied, that those who had lodged in
il the room, stated that shortly after they had re
_ tired to rest, an unknown voice was hoard,-in a
jj trembling and protracted accent, saying, "Do
.r you ica-ri-n-l to be sha-a-ted?” “Well,” repli
ed the men, “ if he conics, he may shave me.”
- lie then requested to he shown to the apart

,1 a largo room, where were seated a great num
ber of persons at a gambling table. —Feeling a
curiosity, which almost every ono possesses,
j* after having heard ghost stories, ho carefully
searched every corner of his room, but could
discover nothing hufthu usual furniture of the
i apartment. Ho then laid down, but did
[ not close his eyes to sleep immediately, and In a
- few minutes, he imagined ho heard a voice say
ing, “ Do you w-a-a-n-t lo he s/ta-a-red ?”—He
1 arose fiom his bed, and searched every part of
■ the oom, hut could discover nothing, lie again
. went lo bed, hut no sooner had he began to com
pose himselftu sice.-, than the question was re
pealed. He again arose and went lo tho win
dow, the sound appearing to proceed from that
quarter, and stood for a while, silent After a
few moments of anxious sus. ense, he again
heard the sound distinctly, and convinced that
it was from without, he opened the window,
when tlic question was repeated full lo Ins cur,
which startled him not a Utile. Upon a minute
ex limitation, however, he observed that the
limb of a large china tree which stood under
ins window, j injected so near to the house, us,
on every breath of wind, to grate against the
shingles, creating a sound, to a lively imagina
tion, esemhhng the interrogation, “Do you
ica-a nt to be sha-a-red?"
Having satisfied himself that this ghost was
nothing more or less than the limb of a tree com
ing in contact with tho house, ho again wont to
hod, and ullcm led tu gel asleep; lint was now |
interrupted hy peals of laughter, and an occa
sional volley of oaths and curses, from the room !
where the gambler;, wore assembled. Think
ing that lie conlil turn the late discovery to his
own advantage, he look a sheet from vhe iio.l,
and wrapped it round him, and taking the Wash
basin in his hand and throwing a too. cl ovur his
arm, proceeded to the loom of the gamblers,
and sudden!) throwing the door open, stalked in, 1
exclaiming in « tremulous voice, “Do you
ira-a-n-t to he sha-n-u-ted?" Terrified at this
sudden appearance of the ghost, the gamblers
were thrown into the greatest confusion in at
tempting to escape fiom tho room, some jump
ing through the windows, and others tumbling
head and heels over others down the stairs. —( htr
ghost taking advantage of a clear room, delibe
rately swept a large ..imnmt of money from the
’ table into his basin, and retired, unseen, to his
room.
The next morning he found the house in the
utmost confusion. He was immediately asked
if lie rested well. He replied in the affirmative.
“Well, no wonde ,” said the landlord, “for tho
- ghost, instead of going to his own room, made a
i mistake, and came to our’s, frightened us all
oat of the room, and took away every dollar of
our money. The guest without being in the
least suspected, quietly ate his breakfast, and
departed, many hundieds of dollars richer, for
this adventure. 8.
