I'm a huge TV junkie! I use TV to get me going in the morning
and to wind me down at night. I have a TV in just about every
room ofthe house—I just have to have the noise. But, I also re
ally enjoy the shows (and some of the commercials—my daugh
ters think it’s funny that I like commercials, but some of them
are really good). And, I really like streaming. It’s so cool that
you can watch just about anything you want-at any time. No
more waiting for a certain time for your favorite show to come
on!
I like all sorts of shows. 1 enjoy HGTV, soapy dramas, and espe
cially sitcoms. My all-time favorite TV show is “Friends”. As if
you didn’t already know...Friends was a sitcom that aired from
1994-2004. It is an ensemble cast, and there’s really no star. It
takes all six of the friends to make the show, and every one of
them is hilarious! The friends became my friends! I bet I’ve seen
all 10 seasons dozens of times—1 can almost recite the lines—and
I never get tired of it! If I’m in a bad mood—Friends will make
me laugh and get me out of it!
I once thought that my attraction to the show was because the
friends are about my age, and I can relate to them. But, that
theory went bust when I realized that my daughters and their
friends also love the show.
Well, I got a big treat over the weekend. The Friends Reunion
show was released. It’s called “The One Where They Get Back
Together,” and it was wonderful! It was like “coming home!” It
was also a little depressing. Like I mentioned, the friends are
about my age-they have all aged very well, and most of them
look about the same-well, I don't-oh well!
I hope Friends will always be streamed somewhere! The Friends
theme song says, *TU he there for you.,.” They have surely been
there for me—and according to the show’s ratings, Tm not the
only one!

Others to Endure
This past weekend we celebrated Memorial Day 2021.
Some of us Americans during the federal government sanctioned
three-day legal holiday spent a few seconds (or minutes) think
ing about the people that died prosecuting our nation’s wars.
ln the days of youth all tins pundit's adult mentors were veter
ans of World War II or Korea. None of those soldiers, sailors,
airmen, and Marines talked about friends that died from wounds.
None ofthe combat veterans ever talked about their days “on the
line.”
None of this pundit’s family from the American Revolution
through the current War on Islamic Terror died in any of those
wars. None of his service buddies died in combat.
Only a tiny fraction of living Americans today had a family
member or friend that died in combat.
A few of us that served in the military may recall the name of
an American that died fighting America’s enemies.
A smaller percentage of us might recall the name of a commu
nity member that died in any war. That, this pundit can do, US
Army Green Beret Captain Phil Thbb of Colquitt, Georgia (1966).
In summary only a few of us Americans today understand the
true cost of American citizenship: Other people died so we can
moan and complain.
Outside of tribal slaughter, politicians make war, and they send
ordinary citizens either voluntarily or by edict into combat to do
the fighting, suffering, and dying to achieve a political triumph.
War is a fascinating human endeavor.
It is something many of us experience only through the movies,
archived newsreels, or literature.
It is a political event with a political goal.
Memorial Day is for many an abstract thought or as Vice Presi
dent Harris noted, just a “long weekend.’’
Montevallo College professor Eugene B. Sledge wrote a memoir
of his time as a combat Marine in World War II. He titled it, With
the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa. He wrote, “War is brut
ish, inglorious, and a terrible waste... The only redeeming fac
tors were my comrades' incredible bravery and their devotion to
each other. Marine Corps training taught us to kill efficiently
and to try to survive. But it also taught us loyalty to each other -
and love. That espirit de corps sustained us.”
He wrote ofthe carnage, “1 asked God “Why, why, why?’I turned
my face away and wished that I were imagining it all. I had tasted
the bit terest essence of wan the sight of helpless comrades being
slaughtered, and it filled me with disgust.”
Sledge opined, “To the non-combatants and those on the periph
ery of action, the war meant only boredom or occasional excite
ment, but to those who entered the meat grinder itself the war
was a netherworld of horror from which escape seemed less and
less likely as casualties mounted and the fighting dragged on
and on. Time had no meaning, life had no meaning. The fierce
struggle for survival in the abyss of Peleliu had eroded the ve
neer of civilization and made savages of us all,”
He however was eloquent and insightful writing, “‘Until the mil
lennium arrives and countries cease trying to enslave others, it
will be necessary to accept one’s responsibilities and be willing to
make sacrifices for one’s country - as my comrades did. As the
troops used to say, If the country is good enough to live in, it’s
good enough to fight for ’With privilege goes responsibility.”
All Americans today should revisit that bit of wisdom.
Sadly, we have a w hole generation of “w oke" Americans that do
not appreciate other people died so they could revise history and
demand “justice.”
World War II US Army General George S. Patton said of com-

but, “It’s better to fight for something in life than to die for noth
ing.” Vice President Harris and her ilk do not understand that.
Patton saluted troops’ headstones and poignantly said of
America’s war dead, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men
who died Rather we should thank God such men lived.”
That is what this pundit reminded himself of more than once
last weekend and several times on Memorial Day.
PFC Eugene Sledge, later Professor Sledge, PhD astutely noted
this: “Something in me died at Peleliu. Perhaps it was the child
ish innocence that accepted as faith the claim that Man is basi
cally good. Possibly I lost faith that politicians in high places,
who do not have to endure war’s savagery, will ever stop blun
dering and sending others to endure it.”

Are 5.6
Billion People
Lost?
By Billy Powell
The Holy Bible contains 66 books (39 in Old Testament,
27 for New Testament). It includes 66 books, 1189 chap
ters, 31,103 verses, and 807,361 words. The Bible repre
sents God's inspired word, II Timothy 3:16 declares: “All
Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
Peter 1:20-21 appended: “No prophecy was ever made by
an act of human will, but by men influenced by the Holy
Spirit’s guidance.'’ God did not write the Bible per se, but
He “superintended” the writing of its authors.
The world’s population currently stands at approximately
8 billion people (7,794,788,739). Its major religions are
Christianity (31 percent of population), Islam (25 percent),
Hinduism (15 percent), and Buddhism (5 percent). Agnos
tics and atheists account for an appalling 16 percent— the
top atheistic nation being China. Other major religions are
Judaism, Taoism, Sikhism, Jainism, Baha'i, Shinto, Zoro
astrianism, etc. There are over four thousand different re
ligions.
Islam believes in one God named Allah. Jesus is consid
ered a prophet and great teacher but not God in the flesh
(John 1:14). Hinduism has many gods, but three supreme
Gods: Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver) and Shiva
(transformer/destroyer). Hindus believe in a continuous
cycle of reincarnation (life... death., .rebirth). Based on pre
vious life, a person could be reincarnated as either a hu
man or an animal. Buddhism has no God. It is an Indian
religion based on the teachings of Gautama Buddha (563-
480 BC). Buddhism seeks to eliminate the individual self
through the attainment of Nirvana (cessation of bad
karma). Only three religions believe in one God: Chris
tianity, Islam and Judaism.
All major religions possess a Holy Writ. Christianity has
its ‘Holy Bible' (Old and New Testaments), Islam follows
the ‘Quran,’ Hinduism is based on the ‘Vedas,’ Buddhism
has the Taipitaka,’ and Judaism adheres to the ’Old Tbs-
tamenf—but rejects the New Testament.
Since ‘non-Christian religions’ do not fulfill the prerequi
site of believing in Jesus as Savior, does this mean that
nearly 70 percent of the world’s population (5.6 trillion
people) is lost. For those who reject Jesus, 1 John 5:12
states that, “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does
not have the Son of God does not have life.”
Why are there so many religions on earth? Romans 1:20-
21 provides the best explanation, To paraphrase, God’s
identity and character can he seen in His creation, but its
people do not wish to believe in a God who demands righ
teousness and morality. So they invent a God who accepts
people into heaven if they have completed certain steps,
followed certain rules, and obeyed certain laws, The exist
ence of so many religions demonstrates humanity 3 rejec
tion of the one true God,
Undergirding the Christian doctrine are two declarations
by Jesus: “I am the way, the truth, and the life...No one
comes to the Father except through Me” and “Whosoever
believes in Me shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
