Watermelons & Old Ford Pickups
1 bought a watermelon from David Renfroe’s roadside produce
stand in Butler the other day. It was delicious! 1 knew it would
be, but what struck me as odd was the fact that the cost of a
w atermelon has not inflated since I was a child-anti that was a
very long time ago!
There’s a reason I remember this, and that reason is because
this involves one of the most amazing men who has ever lived,
my Pa, Grady Averett.
I was young, I’m guessing maybe five or six-I couldn’t have
been much younger, because 1 wouldn’t remember this. I spent a
good portion of every summer in Butler with Mammie and Pa.
(We lived in Warner Robins and North Georgia when I was a
child, and 1 called Mam “Mammie” until I was a teenager. Then,
1 shortened it to Mam, and it stuck for the rest of her life.)
Anyway, it was a summer day in Butler, and I wanted a water
melon. I had seen some in town earlier in the day. So, l told Pa
what I wanted. As we were getting in his truck (a 70s model,
light green Ford that I adored, because I got to ride on the hack if
1 sat down and Pa drove slowly--that was legal back then), he
said, “I am NOT going to pay $4 for a watermelon! " But, we went
to town, anyway.
Mam said she could hear me yelling as we arrived back home.
She ran outside to see what I was yelling about. I was yelling,
“Mammie, Mammie, Pa didn’t pay $4 for the watermelon-he paid
FIVE!" And, that is exactly what I paid for the watermelon the
other day!
This memory brought back lots more—On Mam and Pa’s brick-
floored patio that led to the carport, there was a very old refrig
erator fit was even old way back then). After we cut the water
melon and ate what we wanted, Mam cut the watermelon into
pieces and put it in a Tupperware, which w ent into the old refrig
erator. That was the coldest refrigerator I ever remember, and
growing up, I, lots of the time, had my head stuck in that refrig
erator eating almost frozen watermelon!
I also wonder what happened to Pa's old Ford truck, I remem
ber when he traded it for an El Camino. Do you remember those
ugly things—they were like a car with a truck bed! Ugh! I re
member not being very happy about that. Mam says that I pitched
such a fit that Pa tried to get the truck back, but it was too late!
fPa spoiled me just a tad!) I know- where the El Camino went, it
went to my Uncle John in Alabama, hut I have no idea where the
Ford truck went!
It really doesn’t matter—it probably wouldn’t run today, any
way, but Pa and I sure made some wonderful memories in that
old Ford!

Revival of 1863
The Vienna News in 1905 reported the August 29 death of Arabi
resident John J. Hyman.
J. Wiliian Jones wrote regarding the 1861-62 Confederate army
resisting the invasion from the North, “...in the army many
wicked men are massed together, and many of the restraints to
sin-such as the family, the society of children and females, the
Sunday-school and Church- are largely removed, so that the
sin, which was in the heart before, which is in the hearts of
those at home, is simply developed. If the world is the theatre
where God is showing the universe what sin is, war is one of
the scenes where the illustration is most perfect.”
The February, 1906 edition of the Confederate Veterans Maga
zine reported: “Hyman.- At the ripe age of seventy-three years,
J. J. Hyman died at his home, near Arabi, Ga., on August 2191.
He entered the Confederate service as a member of the 49th
Georgia in March, 1862, and served faithfully throughout the
war. He returned home and assisted materially in rebuilding
that which had been torn down by the ravages of war. He stood
high in Masonic circles.”
In the November 12, 1902, Vienna newspaper is an interest
ing story titled, 72nd SESSION OF THE BAPTIST ASSOCIA
TION.
It reads in part, “The Houston Baptist Association met in sev
enty-second session at Ebenezer church near Raines, GA.,
Wednesday, Nov 5th. Ebenezer church is located in a fine sec
tion of country and the church has 220 members and has eight
comers to the building, situated in a beautiful pine grove...The
Houston Association originally was composed largely of churches
located in Houston County, but she has traveled southward until
not a single church in Houston is a member of that body.
“The Piedmont Association was originally organized at the foot
of the mountains as the name indicates, but she has traveled
southward until now the churches along the seashore around
Brunswick compose that body.
‘The only reason we know why these Baptist associations are
moving south toward the gulf and the ocean, is that there is
much -water there.”
Raised as a Baptist, this pundit can attest to that fact: Bap
tists do love water!
Back to that article: “...Rev. J. J, Hyman was elected president
of the Houston Sunday School Convention, Brother Hyman is
not only a Confederate veteran, but a noble veteran of the Cross.”
Hum, if the army was a den of iniquity, there must be a story
here involving John Hyman.
In J, Wiliian Jones’ hook, Christ in the camp, or religion in
Lee’s army is this passage: “I may say here that Brother Hyman,
who was commissioned chaplain on the 1st of May, 1862, after
serving for a time as private in the ranks of the Forty-ninth
Georgia Regiment, was one of the most faithful and successful
men we had, and though laid aside for a time by sickness
(brought on by over-work), had the privilege of baptizing 238
soldiers, seeing 500 others profess conversion in connection with
his labors, preaching about 500 sermons, besides many exhor-

talions, lectures, etc., and distributing thousands of pages of

on high.”’
Jones recorded, “One of the most powerful revivals at this
period was in Thomas’s Georgia Brigade, which began about
the 1st of February, 1863, under the labors of Rev. J. J. Hyman,
chaplain of the Forty-ninth Georgia Regiment, who preached
from four to six times every day <to meet the demands of the
scattered regiments of his brigade), and was about to break
down, when Rev, E. B. Barrett came to his help and was soon
after commissioned chaplain of the Forty-fifth Georgia Regi
ment. There were a large number of professions of conversion;
Brother Hyman (and Brother Barrett, after he came) admin
istered the ordinance of baptism almost daily, and when or
ders came for the command to march on the Gettysburg cam
paign, Brother Hyman was in the water baptizing forty-eight
converts.”
Wow!
It gets better.
On July 4-5, 1863, the Confederate Army withdrew from
Gettysburg. Reverend Hyman continued the work of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ while on the march-
Jones wrote: “I have told how the work went on, and have
described the touching baptismal scene in the Antietam [ Creek |
near Hagerstown.”
On the move Reverend Hyman took time to baptize new Chris
tians: What a marvelous testament to that disciple of Christ
and Georgian, Reverend John J. Hyman!

The Important
Work Of
Deacons
After the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, the
Christian church began to grow so fast that some believers,
especially widows, were neglected in the daily distribution
of food and alms. Specifically, the Greek members com
plained that Greek widows were being denied their fair
share of food. Since the twelve disciples had their hands
full caring for the spiritual needs of the church, they de
cided to appoint seven leaders to tend to the physical and
administrative needs of the church.
Chosen were Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon,
Parmenas, and Nicolaus. The disciples then prayed and
placed their hands on the seven men. (Acts 6: 1-6). These
men became the forerunners to the deacons that later man
aged the daily activities of the church. This freed up the
elders to concentrate on their duties to teach and preach
the Word.
The term deacon comes from the Greek word “diakonos”
whose English equivalent is “servant.” The qualifications
of deacon are detailed in I Timothy 3: 8-13. To summarize,
a deacon must be reverent, cannot be double-tongued, not
given to wine and strong drink, not greedy, or a lover of
money, and one who is strong in the Christian faith. They
must exercise self-control and be faithful in everything they
do. A married deacon should be the husband of one wife
and manage his children and household well. Likewise,
the wives of deacons should be reverent, temperate, faith
ful, not slanderous, and demonstrate model character. Two
women, Phoebe and Priscilla, became prominent leaders
in the early church (Romans 16: 1-3). Some protestant
churches have a deaconess board that compliments the role
of deacons.
Deacons play a prominent role in the Baptist Church. Other
Protestant denominations such as Methodists, Presbyteri
ans, Episcopalians, Lutherans, etc. do not have deacon
boards per se due to d ifferenl organizational structures, but
accomplish ‘diaconal’ through other means. In the early
church, a clear distinction existed between ‘deacon’ and ‘el
der.'The significant work of deacons freed up the elders (pas
tors) so they could focus on preaching and teaching. So, it is
today.
The first deacon, Stephen, w p as summoned before the Jew
ish Sanhedrin (Acts 7: 1-53) to explain trumped-up charges
of speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.
Stephen’s long speech extended from the call of Abraham to
Isaac, then Jacob, followed by the 12 tribes of Israel. Stephen
continued with Moses and progressed through the Exodus,
then to King David and King Solomon. He ended with the
Jews’ rejection and murder of Christ. Highly enraged, his
accusers stoned Stephen to death. Before dying, he “called
upon God” and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
Acts 8: 1 describes Saul (became known as Paul the Apostle)
as “consenting” to the death of Stephen. Saul wreaked havoc
on the fledging Christian church and jailed its members
(verse 3). Then something big happened. Traveling on the
Damascus road to arrest Christians, the ‘Risen Lord’ ap
peared to Paul in a blinding light (Acts 9). Paul was changed
from the ‘greatest persecutor of Christians’ to the ‘greatest
Spokesman for Christ’ the world has ever known.
