I have just got to slow down, get my head on straight, and do
better, because I’m getting on my own nerves! Lately (well, it’s
nothing new, but it seems to be more excessive lately), I am mak
ing the biggest messes that are causing me lots more messes.
For example, last night, 1 had a school board meeting on my
schedule. I work late on Monday nights, anyway, so just a little
while before the meeting, I ordered a hamburger and some lem
onade. (Mam always cooked supper for me on Monday and Tues
day nights—just one of'the many, many things 1 miss since she
joined the saints in Heaven a few months ago. Also, I know you
don’t give a rip about what 1 had for supper last night, but it’s
sort of relevant to this story. )
Anyway, I became absorbed in work, was running late picking
up my ordered food, and was cutting it dose to the start of the
meeting. After 1 picked up the food, I was rushing to get inside,
eat, and get to the meeting. So, as I was getting out of the car, 1
was carrying way too much stuff', because I didn’t want to waste
time making another trip from the car to the office (which is about
ten feet). I was holding a stack of mail that I picked up on the
way to the restaurant, my food, a styrofoam cup oflemonade,
two sets of keys, and my camera.
When I got to the office door, of course, the door key waa in the
wrong hand, underneath all that stuff! So, I tucked the cup of
lemonade between my arm and my chest and finally got to the
key. While I was turning the key, 1 accidentally squeezed the
styrofoam cup, and lemonade went all over my shirt. That startled
me (and ticked me off), causing me to drop and scatter all that
mail and the other set of keys. (Thankfully, the camera was on
my shoulder) 1 was wet and mail was lying on the ground out
side the olfice--in the spilled lemonade* What a mess!
Since 1 now live about 10 miles out of town, I didn't have time to
go home and change clothes. Plus, 1 no longer had time to eat,
since 1 had to clean up that mess.
In an attempt to save time, I lost a lot of time! I should have
just taken the ten extra steps and made two trips in the first
place. And, this is merely one of many, many examples.
So, 1 slunk into the meeting, looking more haphazard than usual
and tried to lower my anxiety. Well, it’s now another day. I’m
calm right now, and nothing extraordinary has happened, so far,
but it's really early in the day. Oh, boy!

Cultural Cleansing
“To study history is to study change.. .Historians use a wide
range of sources to weave individual lives and collective
actions into narratives that bring critical perspectives on
both our past and our present. Studying history helps us
understand and grapple with complex questions and dilem
mas by examining how the past has shaped (and continues
to shape) global, national, and local relationships between
societies and people.
“Because history gives us the tools to analyze and explain
problems in the past, it positions us to see patterns that
might otherwise be invisible in the present - thus providing
a crucial perspective for understanding (and solving!) cur
rent and future problems,” History Department, University
of Wisconsin.

Rewrite the History of World War I.”
He wrote, “Soldiers were not the only causalities of the
Great War (World War 1], Some memorials honored civil
ians who had been deliberately killed by German forces
during the invasion of Belgium and France in 1914. Facing
international outrage, Germany vehemently denounced
accusations of atrocities committed by its troops as Allied
propaganda. In August 1936, it condemned a national monu
ment “to the memory of 23,700 civilian martyrs of Belgium.”
inaugurated that month in the town of Dinant, as a “hate
monument.” German foreign ministry officials objected in
particular to the memorial's provocative inscription, “Furore
Teutonico” (Teutonic fury), which blamed the civilian mas
sacres on German rage.
“In May 1940, when German forces invaded Belgium and
France, they took their revenge, razing Furore Teutonico
and other troublesome war monuments. Beyond historical
revisionism, this willful destruction of war memorials con
stituted psychological warfare-in essence, an act of killing
the dead.”
German combat engineers pulverized that Belgian monu
ment and others.

Irina Bokova, Director General of the United Nations Edu

condemn in the strongest possible manner the destruction
of the archaeological site of Nimrud in Iraq. This is yet an
other attack against the Iraqi people, reminding us that
nothing is safe from the cultural cleansing underway in the
country: it targets human lives, minorities, and is marked
by the systematic destruction of humanity’s ancient heri

“We cannot remain silent, The deliberate destruction of
cultural heritage constitutes a war crime. I call on all po

remind everyone that there is absolutely no political or reli

heritage.
“I call on all of those who can, especially youth, in Iraq and
elsewhere, to do everything possible to protect this heri
tage, to claim it as their own, and as the heritage of the
whole of humanity.”
June 14, 2021, news provider Reuters released an inter
esting three-line report: “French President Emmanuel Ma
cron said on Sunday fighting racism should not lead to a
“hateful” re-writing of history following worldwide protests
over the killing of George Floyd, a black man, by a police
officer in the United States.
“Some protesters in the United States and elsewhere have
targeted statues of historic figures associated with slavery
or other past human rights abuses.
“T will be very clear tonight, compatriots: The Republic
won’t erase any name from its history It will forget none of
its artworks, it won’t take down statues,’ he said in a tele

Americans tolerated the destruction or removal of more
than two hundred monuments and have renamed places
and things erasing American history.
It is sad commentary when the United Nations and France
are stronger and more courageous than we are!

The Folly
Of Questioning
God
By Billy Po well
Job is one of the oldest books in the Bible— written ap
proximately two thousand years before Christ by an un
known author. The book attempts to explain why God per
mits human suffering. Job was a wealthy man living in the
land of Uz—probably Edom. Having ten children and own
ing large flocks and herds, Job was a righteous man. One
day, God boasted to Satan about Job’s goodness, but Satan
countered that Job was good because God had protected him.
Satan challenged God to remove His ‘hedge of protection’
and that Job would curse Him. God allowed Satan to tor
ment Job, but forbad Satan from taking Joh's life.
Job’s torment began when his livestock and farm workers
were taken by marauding invaders. Then his ten children
died when a violent windstorm collapsed their home. After
hearing this, Job tore his clothes and shaved his head, but
he still blessed God. Subsequently, God allowed Satan one
more con cession—to touch Job’s body, which became afflicted
with painful skin sores. Job’s wife, seeing his predicament,
urged Job to curse God and die, but he refused, struggling
to accept his circumstances.
Soon, three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar came to
visit Job. They sat with Job in silence for nearly a week, but
on the seventh day, each man shared his thoughts on Job’s
afflictions. All believed that Job’s agony was due to sin.
Highly irritated, Job called his friends “worthless physicians
who whitewash their advice with lies.” Job did not try to
defend himself, hut pleaded his case to God, Job believed
there was a “Redeemer” in Heaven who would vouch for his
innocence (19:25).
The constant upbraiding by bis friends proved too much
for Job. He lamented that God lets wicked people prosper
while he and other innocent people suffer. (Evil-doers seem
to prosper for a while, but their sins always catch up with
them). Then, Elihu came to visit Job. Elihu claimed that
Job’s excessive talking was a rebellion against God... that
Job spent too much energy vindicating himself rather than
God, Elihu added that physical suffering provided the suf
ferer an opportunity to recognize God’s love and forgive
ness when he was well again.
Suddenly, God called from a whirlwind and confounded
Job with His questions (chs 38-41). The Supreme Creator
asked Job this rhetorical question: “Where were you when 1
laid the foundations of the earth?” After hearing His won
ders of creation. Job acknowledged the unlimited power of
God and conceded the limitations of human knowledge. This
pleased God, yet He was still upset with Eliphaz, Bildad,
and Zophar for spouting theologically unsound advice. Job
interceded on their behalf and God forgave them. God ac
cepted Elihu’s testimony. In the end, God returned Job's
health, provided him with twice as much property and pos
sessions, gave him ten new children, and granted him a
long life.
It is folly to question God. His thinking is beyond human
understanding, Isaiah wrote that ‘God’s ways are not our
ways.’ Jeremiah said that humans cannot question the Cre
ator who ‘formed us in our mother’s womb.’ Romans 9: 21
says it best: “the clay (or pottery) cannot talk back to the
Potter.”
