We all know that it feels pretty good to be “right” every now
and then. But, sometimes, it’s just not the best thing to be
“right”!
Saturday afternoon, Todd and I were at the pool-not enjoy
ing the day at the pool, but working. Well, Todd was work*
ing, and, basically, I was watching. He told me to mix up
about five pounds of chlorine, so 1 did. I was standing next to
the pool stirring the bucket of chlorine (for a long time). He
saw me, and said, “The chlorine isn’t doing any good in that
bucket!” Well, I knew that, and I also knew he wanted me to
pour the chlorine into the skimmer But, rather than being
agreeable, I said, “I'm not going to open that skimmer—there
might be a snake in there!” (Remember my very irrational,
horrible fear of snakes!)
Todd said, “There's no snake in there. This is chlorine wa
ter!” Seeing that there was nothing he could say to make me
open that skimmer, he came over to do the job, while I con
tinued to watch. You see, there was a time when I would
open the skimmer, but after I found a few frogs, lizards, mice,
etc. in there, it dawned on me that if those critters could get
in there—a snake could also get in there! (I’m not afraid of
the frogs and lizards, etc., but just the thought that a snake
could be in there, stopped me from ever opening that skim*
mer again.)
So, Todd, confident in the fact that a snake could not be in
there, came over and took the lid off the skimmer, and yelled,
“Snake!” I took off, and he was laughing at me! There was
no snake--he was just aggravating me. So 1 went back to the
pool after I had run halfway across the yard, from the snake
that wasn’t really there.
After you remove the lid from the skimmer (which is the
scary part, to me), you have to remove the basket and dean
out the debris. As I watched, Todd picked up the basket and
turned to dump the debris. I started yelling and running,
again! Guess what was underneath the hasket! You got it-
a water snake! By the time Todd realized what was going
on, T was down the hill and sitting in the car, shaking all
over!
I yelled from the car, “See, there is a snake in there, I told
you! That’s why I won’t open that skimmer!” There was
nothing he could say! I was right!
Admittedly, it was a very small snake. Todd said maybe six
inches long would be stretching it. But, to me, that doesn’t
even register. A snake is a snake is a snake!
I was right, for once, but I would have rather been wrong!
Sometimes, it’s just not a good thing to be right! But, I can
promise you, that sealed the deal with me not opening the
skimmer!

No Friends
Hannah Frishberg writing for the New York Post on Au
gust 2, 2019, posted an interesting story titled, 1 in 5
millennials are lonely and have £ no friends’: survey.
Millennials arc people between 24 and 40-years old.
Twenty percent of those Americans have no friends.
That is sad.
It is no mystery why they are rioting in cities, tearing
down monuments, and living in chaos. Twenty percent of
them are lonely and without friends!
Merriam-Webstefs first definition of friend is: one at
tached to another by affection or esteem.
That same lexicon defines affection as: a feeling ofliking
and caring for someone or something: tender attachment.
It makes sense that people that do not like or care for
other people would be feral.
That same book defines the verb form of esteem as: to set
a high value on.
Undomesticated people do not value the lives or property
of industrious people.
Friends have always played a significant role in the life
of this pundit. Friends truly made life worth living and
make life grand today,
A friend once employed me as a Special Assistant. The
job was one of liaising with federal, state, and local agen
cies and with the Congressman’s constituents. The work
involved myriad functions and proved intriguing. During
one extended action-packed week that required many miles
of weary travel, there was an extended period of silence
between us late at night while we motored down life’s high
way. Jack broke that stillness by saying, “Bob, one sign of
a good friendship is two people can go extended periods of
time without having to say anything.”
We continued another 40 minutes in silence.
Pulling to a stop outside his home he asked, “What time
do you want me to meet you at the airport for tomorrow’s
trip to Savannah?"
“Five,” was the response.
“Bye,” and the door closed.
French writer and winner of the 1957 Nobel Prize for Lit
erature, Albert Camus, penned a poignant statement that
resonates with this pundit: Camus said, “Don’t walk in
front of me, I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me, I may
not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”
Quite often, just being in the company of friends made
the difference between happiness and sadness, success and
failure, hope and despair.
Publication Psychology Today tells us, “Strong friendships
are a critical aspect of most people’s emotional well-being.

Research indicates that close friendships are associated
with greater happiness, self-esteem, and sense of purpose.
Consider this: The Bible tells us in Proverbs: “A friend
loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adver
sity.”
Brother in context there refers to membership in the fam
ily of God, In that regard, this pundit has many “brothers
and sisters” because of our faith that Jesus by his sacrifice
on that cross at Golgotha redeemed, us from our sins and
thus his father, God, adopted us into His family.
We attest to that fact because in our “time of adversity”
that began on April 13, 2021, when a sudden infection of
Brynda’s knee forced doctors to remove that joint, we had
brothers and sisters that came along side us. They prayed
for us during our confinement of nine days, eighteen hours,
and 8 minutes in a small hospital room. They lifted Brynda
up to our redeemer, and Jesus healed her body.
After our return home, for eight weeks, they delivered
meals to us three and four days a week; we never experi
enced hunger!
Friends also came along side us doing scores of “little
things.” They lifted our spirits and encouraged us daily
We therefore cannot empathize with those people writer
Frishberg wrote about. We have never been lonely for lack
of a friend.
On the day of this column’s publication (July 29, 2021),
Brynda will undergo another surgery to install a new pros
thetic knee. It will restore her mobility and make her whole
again!
That day, brothers and sisters will be praying for another
successful surgery. We ask our friends that do not pray
but cross their fingers and hope for good things to happen;
cross your fingers and hope surgery goes well. Our friends
that ululate while holding sunward crystals bought in
Sedona, Arizona, we ask you to wail away asking for the
same thing.
While you are at it Thursday, please join with us as we
are praying for two dear friends, Tom and Rilene Eubanks,
Please help us lift them up to the Lord asking for grace
and mercy.

Never
Thirst Again
Nineteenth century poet Samuel Coleridge (1772-1834)
authored his famous poem about the Ancient Mariner
thirsting for water while marooned at sea. The poem reads:
“Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink.”
Coleridge’s poem exemplifies the distribution of water on
the earth-97 percent of the earth’s supply is the undrink
able, salty variety found in the oceans and seas while the
remaining 3 percent is located on dry land and is acces
sible to drink.
The chemical symbol for water is H20. This means a com
pound of water contains two atoms of hydrogen for every
atom of oxygen. These two elements bond like magnets
attracting one another. Hydrogen is the most abundant
element in the universe and oxygen is essential for human
and animal life, A human can live almost a month without
food, but only a week without water. One of the greatest
luxuries we have for a thirsty body is a cool drink of clean,
germ-free water. The amount of water on earth has not
diminished since the days of Abraham. The ‘water cycle’
designed by the Supreme Creator is responsible for main
taining a consistent level of water. Our planet, when cre
ated, was placed in the “Goldie Locks” zone of the universe
where H20 exists. This wasn’t by happenstance.
In our country, the average American uses 160 gallons of
water every day. Much of this goes into sewage as humans
must cook, wash dishes, brush teeth, bathe, flush toilets,
etc. However, some undeveloped countries do not have safe
drinking water. We can thank our local utility companies
for maintaining safe and dean drinking water.
In 1945. Louis Zamperin and Russell Philips survived at
sea in a life raft for 47 days. The search aircraft they were
aboard went down in the Pacific Ocean. They survived and
boarded a raft. Their sun-parched bodies thirsted for wa
ter, but no drinkable water was available. Then God sent
a storm. This allowed them to catch rain water. For food,
they wrestled small sharks into their raft.
Water is mentioned in the scriptures. In the Old Testa
ment, God formed the earth by separating the land masses
from the water, the great flood in Noah’s day, Moses strik
ing the rock for water in the desert, and the fleeing Israel
ites crossing the Red Sea. In the New Testament we read
that Jesus turned water into wine, Jesus walking on the
water, and Jesus calming a storm at sea.
When Jesus met the Samaritan women at the well, she
asked if He would give her a drink of water. Jesus said to
her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give will become a fount of water spring
ing up to eternal life.”
More than a thirsty man in the desert needs a cool drink
of water, we all need the ‘water of eternal life’ that only Jesus
provides. Drink this water and you will never thirst again!
