JOINERS CORNER....

“JOE LOUIS - ROUND 3”
Don’t be alarmed by the title. Joe Louis’ storyline isn’t expected to last 15 rounds. This is probably my final musing on the great
boxer, but 1 wasn’t quite finished with, “You can run but you can’t hide." I also found a few other quotes he reportedly made which
pack some potent punches, One 1 especially like is, ’‘Everyone has a plan until they’ve been hit."
Whether the latter quote should be credited to Louis is debatable, A similar statement was documented as early as 1871 and
attributed to Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, a Prussian military strategist. Other notable figures, including Ike Eisenhower, have
expressed that same line of thought.
Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson made a parallel quote in 1987 which was widely reported and often repeated. When
asked about an opponent’s strategy that might prove troublesome, Tyson said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the
mouth." People who earn their living between the ropes seem to have a penchant for catchy phrases. Mohammed Ali comes to mind
and every professional wrestler who has slammed an opponent with a folding chair.
All of that introductory material is to let you know I have no idea who first expressed something that captured the essence of the
quotes were perusing today. Their origins may go all the way back to the Garden of Eden,
After the first couple disobeyed God, they tried to hide among the trees He had made for their enjoyment. “Where are you?" God
asked, although He already knew’. Satan had convinced Adam and Eve that eating the one forbidden fruit would make them like the
One who had created it. The plan seemed simple enough and had great appeal. Until they got hit.
Another example is found in the next generation. The apple apparently didn’t fall far from the tree, Cain was jealous of his brother,
Able, and killed him, thinking his sin would not be discovered, When God asked Cain where Able was, he said, “I don’t know. Am I
my brother’s keeper?" Cain thought he could hide. Until he got hit.
In Noah’s day the people were so corrupt God decided to destroy the whole earth and give mankind a fresh start. Noah, however,
was a righteous man, so he and his family were spared by following God s instructions. Building an enormous ark on dry land surely
must have subjected him to taunts and ceaseless ridicule. I’ve often wondered how he fared within his own family.
“Seriously, Noah," his wife may have asked, “do you really need to spend all your time building a monstrosity of a boat with no
water in sight?"
The people went about living however they wanted. They thought everything was fine. Then rain began falling like never before
and there were no hills left to climb. They followed a plan of their own choosing, which seemed to be working well. Until they got hit,
Jonah took a boat toward Tarsus instead of going to Nineveh as God directed. He didn’t like God’s plan, so he came up wit h his own,
then ended up in the belly of a fish for three days and nights. Jonah tried to hide by running away. His plan seemed rather clever.
Until he got hit.
Ill close by mentioning Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior who seemed unstoppable. Yet a boy named David met him in battle and
slung a rock which struck him between the eyes. Goliath wasn’t hiding from anyone, but maybe he should have been. He had a plan
that looked solid. Until lie got hit.
Some things never change, 1 suppose. Countless people, including myself, tend to make our plans and tailor them to suit our
preferences. When life is going well, it’s especially easy to neglect seeking direction from above. Et’s tempting to focus more on the
here rather than the hereafter.
Christmas is barely over, its joyous celebration of that Bethlehem night still warming our hearts. But Easter is not far away, a time
to reflect less on how Jesus came to earth than why. Even among Christians, our ideas about life and faith are quite varied. There
are two things, however, perhaps we can all agree on.
You can run but you can’t hide. Everyone has a plan until they get hit.

About the time that God was

in Exodus, Chapters 3-14), He
sent Moses and Aaron to
Pharoah, King of Egypt, with
what Pharoah thought was a
request, but in reality was a
demand. The DEMAND was
“Thus saith the Lord God of Is
rael, LET MY PEOPLE GO,
that they may hold a feast unto
Me in the wilderness," (Exodus
5:1). Well, Pharoah was not
accustomed to being told what
to do, and he made the follow
ing reply: “Who is the LORD
that I should obey his voice.,,”
I know not the LORD, neither
will I let Israel go/’ (Exodus
5:2).
NOTHING takes God by sur
prise, and He fully expected
that Pharoah would not ini
tial ly let Israel go. In fact. He
told Moses that BEFORE
Moses went back to Egypt.

At this point, Pharoah tries to

making the tasks of the Israel
ites, God’s people at that time,
more burdensome than they
already were and thereby try
to discourage them. In re
sponse to this, God starts to
send some grievous plagues
upon the Egyptians while, at
the same time, protecting His
people. The plagues become so
grievous that Pharoah, even in
his stubbornness, is forced to
make an ACKNOWLEDG
MENT. During the plague of
the hail, he made this declara
tion: “I have sinned this time:
the LORD is righteous, and I
and my people are wicked,”
(Exodus 9:27). However, it
takes three more plagues be
fore Pharoah agrees to let Is
rael go.
But Pharoah’s heart had be
come so hard that even after he
“lets" them go, he THREAT
ENS to go after them and bring
them back to Egypt.
At this point, God makes a
FINAL decree upon Pharoah
and his army and drowns them
all in the Red Sea.
As we look back on this story,
we can see a pattern develop:
(1) Pharoah denies God
(2 ) He fights against God
(3) God answers back
(4) He acknowledges God’s su
periority
(5) He threatens God’s people
(6) GOD DESTROYS him and
his army.
However, this pattern did not
start on Earth with Pharoah,
but it started in Heaven with a
fellow named Lucifer whose
name today is Satan, We can
see this pattern in his actions:
(1) He disavowed God’s position
and power (Isaiah 14:12)
(2) He FOUGHT against God
(Revelation 12:7)
(3) God answered his attack
(Revelation 12:7-9)
(4) He acknowledges God to an
extent (Philippians 2:10 & 11)
(5) He threatens God s people
(Revelation 12:17)
(6) God FINALLY DESTROYS
HIM (Revelation 20:10)

Until the late 19th century.
Creation was taught in nearly
all schools in the United States.
Lawsuits then begin to be
brought against educators of
that time by people who were
gaining power who believed
they and their fellow humans
were not created, but were only
evolving monkeys. The law
suits resulted in “Truth” of
Creation being replaced with
the untruth of “Theory,” which
has resulted in America's youth
being indoctrinated with the
idea they are evolving mon
keys!
People such as Thomas
Huxley, known as “Darwin’s
bulldog,” popularized Darwin’s
theory of evolution, which is
basically the curriculum that
state mandates be taught, well
only a small portion of that
theory, leaving out the part
about the darker one’s skin the
less evolved, more monkey like
one is!
The fact is, those who de
manded public schools replace
the Creator of mankind with
the Monkey, in reality, have
made monkeys out of not only
themselves but also out of their
children, and any parent and
any state politician who sup
ports that theory being taught,
are they not doing the same?
I now propose a question to
those in power who claim to be
passing or supporting laws, etc.

(3) God responds to this by al
lowing calamities to come upon
this world (Matthew 24:8-12;
Luke 21:25 & 26)
(4) They acknowledge God, but
they won’t obey Him (Matthew
15: 7 & 8)
(5) They will threaten God’s
people with death (Revelation
13:15)
(6) God will finally DESTROY
all wickedness (Revelation 20:

Recycling Your
Christmas Tree
I know that Christmas is not over, but it is not too early to think
about what you are going to do with your tree once ail the gifts
are unwrapped, and all of the ornaments have been returned to
the attic. For many people, it is as easy as returning it to the
storage box and shoving it back in the attic. For those of you who
still purchase real trees, there are several options that don’t in
clude the landfill.
First of all, many of the large chain stores that sell trees will
also have tree drop-off sites for you to take your tree. At these
sites the trees w ill either be hauled off and chipped up, but often
times, they are chipped on site and the chips can be picked up to
use as mulch. If you are fortunate to have your own chipper, you
can do the same thing with your tree. The chips make good mulch
for flowers and shrubs.
I know that there are plenty of fisherman and tons of private
ponds in the county. This is another option for tree disposal,
One or several trees bound together and sunk in a pond create
great structure and provide habitat for bait fish. The bait fish
and the structure attract your large game species and voila! You
have just created a “Honey Hole” in your favorite pond. Just he
careful who you tell about this secret spot.
Another use for these spent trees is as erosion control. They
can be used the same way the hay or straw bales are used in new
road construction. The dense branching and needles make them
excellent at holding soil (sand in most parts of the county) in
place. If you have areas that are prone to severe washing, these
trees do a good job at slowing the process.
If you have a neighbor with some land or know people with
ponds, contact them. They might be glad to take a tree off your
hands, and it will be better than leaving it on the curb for the
garbage men to deal with, or having it accidentally roll off the
back of your pickup down some county road. If you have ques
tions or comments, contact me at 1478) 862-5496, (478) 825-6466,
