GENERAL PRESENTMENTS
Op the Grand Jury for the May Teem

We the Grand Jurors for the county
of Houston, selected and'sworn for the
1st week of the May Term, 1879, res
pectfully submit these, otrr general pre
sentments. We, through appropriate
committees, have examined into the af
fairs bf ottr County, and report as fol
lows:
ROADS AND -BRIDGES.
We find the roads and bridges in
good order, with the following excep
tions:
The rbad leading from Henderson to
Hawkinsville at Big creek, known as
Brown’s Hill, is in a dangerous and al
most impassable condition, and we
again call the attention of our commis
sioners to it.
The bridges at Houston Factory.
Limestone creek, Slappey’s Mill and
crooked bridge at Dry creek (or vibe
versa,) hre needing repairs; also, the
fords at Thurmond’s as well as Gray’s
mill, and the causeway at West bridge;
to all of which we call the attention of
our commissioners, and urge them to
attend to tflfese repairs without dtelay
■ PUBLIC PROPERTY.
We find the Court House in good re
pair, the jail in good condition, cleanly
kept, and the prisoners well provided
for; but would recommend that it be
ceiled overhead. The Poor House is
in good repair and the inmates well
cared for by the keeper.
RECORDS AND FINANCES.
We have examined the records of the
county officers, a toll find them all neat
ly and correctly kept:
The Justices of the Peace bf the 769,
887, 928, 619, 500, 970, 542, 541, and
432 districts failed to hand in their
dockets as the law required. Also, all
the Notaries Public nud Ex-Offibio Jus
tices of the Peace, cicept that of the
771st district.
The County Treasurer’s books show
a cash balauce on hand of (§5,228 14.)
five thousand two hundred and twenty-
eight dollars aud fourteen cents, and
the county out of debt. • In view of
this flattering state of the county’s iinnu
cial affairs, we recommend that the tax
es be reduced so as to cover only the
necessary i xpenses of the conntv.
The Tax Collector reports $539 15
collected on tax executions of 1877, and
he Las paid out the same as follows:
To County School Com’r. $205.00
* * State 185.63

Present—J. M. Davis, J. W. Wimber
ly, J. M, Walden, W. M. Gordon and
J. G Brown, presiding.
Minutes of lust meeting read and
confirmed.
The committee appointed last meet
ing consisting of W. M. Gordon and E.
Jackson, made their report as request
ed,—said report received and ordered
filed away.
Ordered that the following commit
tee, consisting of J. M. Davis, J. M.
Walden, W, M. Gordon, J. M. Culpep
per, J. M. Gray, and Elbert Fengan, be
appointed to investigate the' building of
a bridge at Gray’s mill, near Fort
Yalley, with power to act in the premi
ses, and that this board approve their
action.
The publication of the notice for ap
plication to the General Assembly to
pass a local or special bill to authorize
the County Commissioners of said coun
ty to purchase property sold for state
and county taSeS,- and for other pur
poses, is approved by this board.
Ordered that the petition to open i
church and school road, commencing at
the Alfred Gliett ford, on the' Travel
ler’s Rest road, and rufrntng 21 miles
to Providence Church, be granted, pro
viding there is no objection made and
no expense to tbe county; and it is or
dered that G. J. Mtfrray, S. W. J. Har
ris, W. E. Boler, B. M. Gurr and Dr.-
E. Y. Steadman, be appointed review
ers to investigate and mark out the

day in July next
Ordered that that the resignation of
M. A. Edwards/ as road commissioner
of the 492d district,- G. M., be accept
ed, and that James M. McKenzie be
appointed in his place.
Grdered that W. M. Gordon and E.
Jackson be appointed to have a notice
published in accordance with the act of
the General Assembly, approved' Dec.
3, 1878, to apply to the Legislature for
an'act to authorize and empower the
County Commissioners of said county
to let out- the building and .repairing of.
bridges in said county for lb years,- and'
>r other purposes therein named.
Rid. to credit- of county; 819.00
Leaving of Ins salary to tie paid by
the county $381.00. In commou with
many others of our citizens we had
been led to suppose that the civil Costs
accrueing to the Judge of this cohrl
were much greater than they really are,
the whole sum of theso costs collected
is only $218.00, while ot those uncol
lected not more than $100 are upon sol
vent parties. Taking this fact into
^consideration, and believing that this
court results in great saving to the
county, under the law ns it is, we fix
the salary at twelve hundred dollars, as
it has beoi heretofore.

IN MEMORIAM.
Died in Houston county od the 30th
of December last, Mrs. LucretiaBrown,
relict of Williams Brown, late of said
county deceased. She was born on the
13th of May 1813, afid was therefore in
her 66th year. She joined the M. E.
Church in 1834, and was a consistent
member till death. She had great
Christian faith, and under a sense of
God’s superintending provideiicfe, was
habitually resigned to His will. Her
children, Who knew her best, while they
sificerdy mourn her loss, show the pow
er of a mother’s exafnple and a inoth-
er’s care. Frofn infancy she had in
stilled into thfeir mifids ■ correct princi
ples rnd gave them the power of a

She was twice married: onfie to Da
vid Clark, Septeinber 3rd/ 1S28, and
last to Williams Browif, DeeeiBber 31st,
1S54. Her last husband’s death, whieh
Oeourred a few years before her own,
was the Occasron-bf her Spirital improve
ment, and tended to prepare her for her
own end. She told tlie writer then, at
the time of his burial, that she felt it a
call to her, and that'she would seek to
be ready when her time should come.
She was a kind neighbor, firm friend,
and well beloved by aH who knew her.
She was one of tnb few remaining links
which connected the present with the
past generation; and afforded an excel
lent example of the sterling integrity
aDd true benevolence, which the age in
