J. O. Jelks & Bro., lost about 310.800

W. B. Steele, cotton buyer, lost about

Daniel Pihodes lost his house and

Masonic Hull was worth about §5,000.
The public library was a total loss al

About 800 baler ,cf cotton were burned
a good lot belonging to Houston conn-

eleven bales which Judge Bozeman was
just trjing to sell when the fire was dis

G. J. Brown lost ten bales. The loss
by merchants moving their goods was
heavy.
The cause of the’ fire is not: known,

doubtless reopen in other quarters.
TheMacon fire-men did good work in

Edilorr Hume Journal.
A married daughter of Mr. S. L.
empson, Mrs. Rebecca Mathews
been for some time .iaborirg. under
severe affliction of the mind, 1 o much
so, nj times, that the family were com*
pelled to keep her every action under
the closest surveillance to prevent her
from doing, herself in jury. This morn-
it so happened that this nnfoitunate la
dy was left for a few-minutes alone in
the house; her step-mother being in the
kitchen attending her domestic duties,
and her father and one of her brothers
in the horse-lot fixing a trough. At
tracted by an unusual'noise towards
the dwelling, Mrs, Thomson ran
.to the door just in time to see
MrS. Mathews issuing from the back
door of the dwelling, with her hands
clasped over her kness, and her gar
ments smoking as she, in a stooping
posture, leaped out of the door, and rap
idly ran in the direction of the well
situated only a few ynrds distant. Mrs,
Thompson divining her intention,
sprang towards her, at the same time
screaming, to the top of her yoice to
stop, but.she made no halt and reaching
the well before Mrs. Thompson could
get to her, she sprang at once head
foremost into its depths. - Her father
and brother came, to the well as soon sis
they could get there, expecting nothing
less than to find her lying at the bottom
dead, as the well is forty feet deep; and
there is a barrel at the bottom, stand
ing seveial inches, out of -the water,
greatly increasing the danger of the fall.
She was not dead, however, and as soon
as they conld procure a rope and assis
tance, she was placed secnfily in a bas.-
ket, and drawn out, aud earned into
the house.
Several of the neighboring ladies had,
by this time, gathered, and they put
dry clothes upon her immediately, and
placed her iu bed. As far as they
could tell, there were no bones broken
and wonderful to relate, no severe ex
ternal bruises; Her left knee, and the
inside of her right hand were terribly
binned, and since her clothing was but
slightly burned, even over her knees,
it is conjectured that in a fit of mental
aberration, the placcujbe Jiving glow
ing coals of fire on the naked flesh,
wr.d held them there with her hands,
until moved by the excruciating pain,
she started upon her awful race. Her
only child was drowned some rime ago,
and she has often expressed a desire to
miet the tame death,.so that she might
be with ln'm; and there is little doubt,
that the entire transaction was pre
meditated upon her part. If she recov
ers, and there is good prospect, of her
doing so; it is the purpose of the family
to carry hi r to the asylum, where she
now wishes to be* and which is certain
ly the proper place for her.
Most Respectfully. &6.
