s THE DAILY OPINION. SUNDAY MORNING; ::SEPT. 29. TTap I ent life-til Who Starts Fashions ?—The New York World And Times are disputing about the ladies’ fashions. The Times proposes a ®< v»ngre*3«f American women to decide erhai style of dress American women shall Wear.*’ The World says: We hare no sort of objection to such a Congreos ourselves; but it is certainly a d« l ; ghtful fancy that its members would ever agree upon anything.” Then, again, the World says; The French fashions, which all the world Continues to pattern alter, are now. and for A long time have been set by the dtmi- msom-te—the wane than demi-monde—of the French capital. The short dresses, all the latest and most extraordinary novelties of street and drawing room costume, were originated by one or a conclave of the Pa risian lorettes. But all this, according to the Times “is C re nonsense.” The “French fashions” ve no such origin, though it is very common for men who know nothing about the subject to say they have. It would be te well and as wise to say that the fashions and the novelties in male costume are in vented by blacklegs. The fact is that the ‘•French fashions.” which America and all ti-« world copy after, are the inventions of r fessional artiste* in Paris, and especially Berlin—artistes who, as such, having nothing whatever to do with the demi- and who do not. even as a rule, get their ktrlw adopted through that quarter. By far tne greater part of the novelties in ladies' dress really have their origin in Berlin, with the skillful, ingenious and fertile artiste of the Bazaar. The Parisian governors of style take up some of these and invent others, and. by the facilities which they possess, establish them through out the civilized world. The demi-monde doubtless adopt them as well as the haut- w.',«rie; but it is more to the patronage of the latter than the former that their uni- . vcrsal currency is due. Bonnets.—Bonnets, according to the New York Evening Post, will be worn a little larger this fall, with flat, broad crowns. On the early fill styles there is a lavish sprinkling of gold. Amber has gone out. Diadems will be extensively worn, either with a close-fitting shape, or witli a shape allowing the wearing of a wide tiandeau. trimmed with flower sprays, Katin or velvet. The prettiest ornaments worn on the head will be imitations of the familiar forms and tints of the season. Among the novelties is a hat of brown velvet with a broad band of pheasant’s leathers across the crown, and another of crimson velvet, trimmed in front with clusters of fall leaves and berries. A fall of black lace on the diadem forms a veil, and the crown is bound with red satin. A ** I.agrange” bonnet embroidered with a jet weeping willow; a white royal vel vet hat. diadem front, ornamented with a tulle scarf, liutnuiin" bird and tuft of mara- hout; a hat called “Xe Monsquetaire de la Reine.” of drab velvet, trimmed with brow n satin, and behind with strings of black lace; a “Charlotte Cordav” hat, trimmed with white satin, gold cord fringe, black lace and ostrich plume, are exhibit ed. Besides other fresh styles, there are several new modifications of the favorite - Fanchon,” as well as of the round hats. Of the latter, the “ Pare pa ” bids fair to be the favorite. In coiffures the novelties of a Catalan, whose principal ornament is a cluster of cactus leaves, and a “ Lucretia Borgia." ornamented with a golden palm leaf. Madame Demorest’s “Drusilia,” a curious compromise between a cap and a bonnet, is highly praised. It is of a pe culiar shape, a deep point on the forehead, three inches back a basque front, and a fiat crown. Garibaldi was arrested at Sienna early this morning, and brought to this city un- «ler guard in a special train. He was ta ken prisoner while crossing the Roman frontier. GEORGIA, Gordon County.
