THE DAILY OPINION.
THURSDAY MORHIHG:: OCTOBER 24.
Ah Insane Nkgko Captured—Police
OjUer Stabbed, dtc.—Yesterday morning
an insane negro named Isaac, who has been
employed on the Arrington plantation,
commenced an assault upon a younj? lady
named Fraser, with a knife. Conscious of
her danger, she sprang through an open
gate and escaped. The boy then met a
youth named John Thomas Cahill, and
asked him who he belonged to, at the same
time making a thrust at him with a knife.
The boy, thinking he was in Joke, respond
ed by stating that he was a tree man, upon
which the negro asked him if he was a
rebel or a Yankee. The boy made no re
ply, when the negro became very much
excited, and made fresh demonstrations,
exclaiming, “I’m bound to kill you, by
G—d! ” It was with the utmost aiffienlty
that Master Cahill was enabled to escape
uninjured.
l*olice officer Keating, apprised of the
above facta, attempted to arrest the negro,
and caught him by the arm for the pur
pose of conveying him to the calaboose.
The boy attacked the officer with his knife,
making severe wounds in the right thigh—
upon which the policeman drew bis re-'
volver and fired four ttmes, three of the
shots taking effect, one behind the groin,
cne in the back of the neck, and one in the
arm. By this time the lunatic thought it
best to give up the contest, and was taken
to the guardhouse, where, after chloro
form baa been administered, the balls were
carefully extracted by Dr. Walter C. Jack-
son, the City Physician. The patient has
not received any permanent injury, and
will, we presume. De conveyed forthwith
to the lunatic asylum. When asked why
he had attempted to take the life of Miss
Fraser and Master Cahill, his reply was:
‘•The Yankees told me to do it.”—Montgom
ery Sentinel.
Impudence vs. Modesty.—The impu
dent man, like the poet, is born—not made.
As Lever well says: u An impudent man
can simulate modesty; but it is impossible
for a modest man to simulate impudence.”
Yet, although the most perfect “check”
must be a natural gift, great proficiency in
this line may be had by practice, and it is
faculty that may be much improved. For
to achieve impudence a man nas not only
to acquire self-confidence, but to get rid of
self-distrust. lie only is bashful who is
distrustful and uncertain of his own pow
er to act well his part” in the emergency
that is upon him.
As a rule, men judge a man at first sight
by his own opinion of himself, as manifes
ted in his mien. If he be shrinking, timid,
inclined to make way for others, and prone
to be subordinate, the place they will as
sign him will be proportoined to his claims.
If he be loud, self-asserting, inclined to
jostle liis neighbors, instead of making
room for them, they will set him down as
one w lio has a title to the position he
claims, and in most cases that positition
will be quietly yielded to htm.
