Progress of the California End-of
the "Pacific Railroad.—A writer in
speaking of the progress of the work on
the Central Pacific, says :
A gentleman who had occasion to travel
along the line of the Pacific Railroad be
yond the summit recently, Informs us that
a vast amount of work has, and is being
done the present season. He estimates the
working force at not less than ten thou
sand men. Between Ciseo - aad^Cobnrn’s
Station, a distance of twenty-one miies is
embraced the heaviest work yet encoun
tered. including the long tunnel at the
summit, besides seven or eight of shorter
length. The summit tunnel is far ad
vanced toward completion—some five hunj
dred and fifty feet of bottom only remain
ing to be taken out. The other tunnels
are finished, or nearly so; and from the
summit down the eastern slope, as far as
Coburn’s, it is believed the track will he
graded this season, if the winter does not
close in earlier than usual. From Co
burn’s. eastward, down the Truckee toward
Crystal Peek, the track is graded and
ready for the rails, a distance of twenty-
five miles. For this portion of the road
the rails have been hauled by wagons from
Cteco to Coburn’s, aiid are being laid down.
An engine and construction train is at
work, and already about nine miles of track
have been laid down from Coburn’s east
ward—the rails being laid dowh at the rate
of half a mile per aiem—and the entire
tweritjr-Ave miles will be in Tunning order
before many days. From Cisco to the sum
mit the work of construction is of the
heaviest character — the rock Tibbed
mountains forming a formidable har
rier to the construction of a rail
road ; but the work is prosecuted as
energetically as possible in view of the ob
stacles to be overcome. It is not believed
that this division of the road can be com
pleted this season, and as the deep snows
of mid-winter will compel a suspension of
the work upon it. which will not melt away
before the summer of the next year, it is
considered safe to say the connection of
rail will not he made over the summit be
fore the first of July, 1868. This accom
plished. the company can. forthe first time,
make distance rapidly in the construction
of the road, and at the close ot the
next year it confidently believed the loco
motive will be one hundred and fitly miles
beyond the Truckee. This is certainly en
couraging for a ride by rail to the Eastern
States in the year 1870.

Raw Bone Super-Phosphate.
The following testimony in reference to
the above fertilizer, by one well known in
this community and State, will be read
with interest:
TESTIMONY OFCHAS. W. THOMAS)
Rector St. Philip’s Church, Atlhnta, Ga.,
A. K. Seago. Esq.: Sir—In answer to
your question respecting Baugh’s Raw-
Bone Super-Phosphate I send you the fol
lowing facts:
I prepared in my garden, at West End,
three squares for Irish potatoes; on the
first I put nothing; on the second, Guano
at the rate of two hundred and fifty pounds
per acre; on the third, your Bone Dust at
the rate of three hundred pounds per acre.
As you are not interested in the quality, I
give no particulars of soil or mode of cul
ture, further than to say that in these re-
f
spects, and in time of planting the squares |
were equal. The square manured with i
Guano yielded forty per cent, over the un
manured square; and that manured with
Baugh’s Raw Bone Super-Phosphate
seventy-five per cent, over the unmanured
A
square. It may be that the Guano was not
a pure article. I bought it, however, for
Peruvian, and from a reliable house, and
at the same rate per pound as the Bone
