To Advertisers.—Advertisements to
eecure insertion the same day, must be
banded in by 12 o’clock noon.
Qttj Subscribers.—W• fear that in some
rises our City subscribers are neglected by
tbs carriers for this office. Those who
fril to receive the Opinion regularly will
oblige us if they will notify ns promptly.
Lecture.—We are gratified to learn that
that popular lecture, thorough scholar and
eminent divine, Rev. Father Ryan, will
deliver a lecture in this city the incoming
WC ek. The admirers of a high degree of
Intellectual culture and splendid oratory
will thus have an opportunity of a rare
feast.
liF.LUiiocs.—Religious services will be
In-Kl to-morrow night at the school house
on I.uckie (the building occupied by Miss
Craighead as a free school) near Marietta
street. The sendees will be continued
from night to night as long as it seems
to serve the best interests of those who at
tend. The services will bo conducted by
i:, v. Mr. Spilinan, Pastor of the M. K.
< Lurch of this city. The citizens gener
ally, and strangers visiting the city, are
ronlially invited to attend. t
Theatrical.—Davis’ Hail will be open
to-night, at which time the comedy of the
-Widow of Palermo, or the Lady in Black”
will be introduced. The performance of
tin* Farce last night fs said to have been a
complete success. We suppose that the
play to-night will be equally so.
N'kaklt a Runaway.—This morning the
•pledid pair of steeds attached to Jack's
‘ Kscelsior” bread wagon took fright at a
train passing, and came very near making
a ranaway scrape of it. The driver, how
ever, succeeded in managing them, and a
general “smash up” was averted.
Beat him Good.—Last night the west
ern portion of the city was the scene of
rather a personal affair. A soldier who
is said to be “in” liquor, (or rather the
liquor was in him) was sitting near the
m;td-side, and fired a pistol. Soon after
the report was heard, some one fell upon
him w it i a club and beat him thoroughly,
the soldier halloing, at the top of his
voice, “murder! murder! 1 murder!!! The
police hearing the excitement hastened to
the scene of action, but ere they reached it
a squad of soldiers arrived and took pos
session of their inebriated comrade, and
-walked” him oft* to his quarters. Ills as
sailant made his escape.

Condition of Mr, Hayes.
The Messrs. Hopkins, who eommlted the
murderous assault upon Mr. Hayes, on Sat
urday night last, were not placed in Jail
on Sunday night, but were held in custody
at the United States barracks until yester
day morning. Application wag made to
Justice P. M. Russell, that they be admit
ted to bail. The Justice addressed a note to
Dr. King, inquiring as to Mr. Hayes’ con
dition, to which answer was returned that
it was extremely critical and dangerous.
In view of the circumstances, the Justice
refused bail, and a writ of habeas corpus
was sued out before Judge Levi S. Bussell.
It was argued at five o’clock in the after
noon, by Hon. W. S.-Chialom, and Judge
Wm. Law for the defence and S. Yates
Levy, Esq., and D. Hair Bice, Esq, for the
prosecution. The defense asked jbr a dis
missal, on the ground of illegality of the
second arrest. The motion was denied by
the Judge, who remanded the prisoners
back to jail, to await a hearing at ten
o’clock, on Wednesday morning. This de
cision was afterwards reversed, and they
were admitted to bail, in the sum of $4J)00
each. The court decided that the second
arrest was a legal one.
Mr. Hayes’ condition last evening grew
more alarming. He was again seized with
convulsions, and was worse than he has
been since the attack was first made.—Re
publican, \lth.

Strictly Personal.—From a poster to
be seen at the post office corner, we judge
that there is, or has been, a personal affair
between two of our citizens, and from the
manner in which the poster speaks of the
posted, we incline to the opinion that he
means to be decidedly personal in his re
marks about the posted gentleman.
communicated.)
Things Must Get Right.—I might give
you many reasons why the people of At
lanta are almost ruined, outside of the con-
vqueaces of the war, but I will merely
mention one cause, that of enormous rents,
which have lieen exacted from the mer
chant and the laboring classes generally.
Houses, which would have rented before
the war for *25 per month, are now renting
from $120 to *125 and even $150 per month.
Things must get right There is no money,
no credit and laws in existence by which
men can evade the payment of debts, and
it must be apparent to every reflecting
mind tiiat it would be much better that
landlords put their rents at such prices as
would enable their tenants to pay readily
and punctually, than to ask such fabulous
prices as to be beyond the reach of any
who might be the occupant of their prem
ises. Rents in every city in Georgia have
gone and are going down; but in Atlanta,
enormous and almost unpardonable prices
are persisted in. Think of it; a house
which could now be built for $4,000 rent
ing for $1,800 per annum—over 40 per cent,
upon the capital expended—and that
monthly, in advance. Such cannot con
tinue—rents must fall in proportion to the
scarcity of money and the fall in every
thing else; if those who are owning houses
expect to rent them, and are unwilling to
share in the misfortunes of the people con
sequent upon the condition of the country,
let them keep their premises until they are
soldered down to a realization of existing
facts.
In conclusion, I must be permitted to
say, that I pity the man, or set of men
w ho would close their houses against the
wants and demands of the community,
merely from the fact that such prices for
rents are demanded that the people
cannot pay them. While on the other
hand, if rents were reasonable and right,
they would be punctually, met and all par
ties satisfied. Justice.

Cotton opened this morning at lOalO^a
10%c. Receipts for the day probably 150
bales. The market was active.
The Grocery and Provision trade this
morning was decidedly brisk, there being
a great many persons in the city from the
rural districts laying in their supplies for
the holidays.
Dealers in clothing, fancy and staple
goods, were driving a lively trade, the same
motive, no doubt, actuating their custom
ers that does the purchasers of provisions
and groceries. The greater part of the peo
ple being on the qui vive for the a pproach-

generally, is brisk. There are few changes

Raw Bone Super-Phosphate.
Tlie followlnji testimony in reference to
the above fertilizer, by one well known in
this community and State will be read
with interest:
TESTIMONY OF THAN. W. THOMAS,
Rector 8t. Philip's Church, Atlhnta, Ga.,
A. K. Seaoo, Esq. . Sir—In answer to
your question respecting Baugh’s Raw
Bone Super-Phosphate I send you the fol
lowing facts:
I prepared in my garden, at West End,
three squares for Irish potatoes; on the
first I put nothing; on the second. Guano
at tbe rate of two hundred and fifty pounds
per acre; on the third, your Bone Dust at
the rate of three hundred pounds per acre.
As you are not interested In the quality, I
give no particulars of soil or mode ol cul
ture, further than to say that in these re
spects, and in time of planting the squares
were equal. The square manured with
Guano yielded forty per cent, over the nn-
mannred square; and that manured with
Baugh’s Raw Bone 8upcr-Fl. o.phate
seventy-five per cent, over the unmanured
square. It may be that the Guano was not
a pure article. I bought it, however, for
i >
Peruvian, and from a reliable house, and
at tbe same rate per pound as tbe Bone
Dust CHAS. W. THOMAS
