According to city detectives, Walter
Graham, the young man held prisoner
In the Tower on the charge of murder
Ing George Richardson on the night of
December 22, 1806, made a daring es
cape from revenue officers In Gwinnett
county, about four years ago, by swkn-
mlng across a river after having been
cornered by th* •■revenue*.'’ !
Graham formerly resided In Gwin
nett county, prior to coming tn Atlanta,
and while there Is said to have been
accused of operating an Illicit still. De
tectives say that revenue officers mfcdc
a raid on the piece and chased Graham
for some distance, finally running him
to the river bank and cornering him.
It looked so though the fugitive had
been run to earth, but sa the pursuers
were rloalng In on hint, It Is stated, he
deliberately rushed to the water's
edge, leaped headlong Into the stream
and began to swim vigorously for the
opposite bank. The startled officers
were foiled by this unexpected and
daring move and before they could hit
on a plan of pursuit the fugitive swim
mer had reached the opposite bank and
disappeared.
The detectives say they are not posi
tive ae to whether Graham was ever
caught, but are of the opinion he was
not.
Arnold to Defend Graham.
Graham has engaged Attorney Reu
ben R. Arnold to defend him and will
make it strong fight to save his neck.

tains a clause which demands proof

the Civil war. If this was true, it
would, of course, bar a large number

Judge Martin, however, declare* that
no such clause Is In the McCumber
bill, end that no veteran of the Mexican
