cided to build an electric line up Look
out Mountain and will begin work on It
soon. The new line will follow the
route of the old broad-gauge steam

Amerlous, aa, April S.—An Investi
gation of the Sumter county chalngang
may be made as result of a dramatic
scene which occurred In the court while
Judge Crisp was placing an additional
sentence on Gus Nelson, an escaped
state convict and also an escape from
the county chalngang.
The negro broke Into tears and made
statement which muy result In an
official investigation of the Sumter
county chalngang, from which to many
escapes have recently been made.
Nelson declared that the recent nu
merous escapes were Ibo result of al
leged cruelty practiced upon the con
victs. He slated that pick bandies and
other slmilnr Instruments were used to
bent the prisoners, ami stated that tho
chalngang was ten 'lines worse than
the stale penitentiary.
Immediately letters were nddressed
by Judge Crisp to the county commis
sioners requesting linpsrtlel and com
plete investigation ot he method of
treating misdemeanor convicts.

on good authority that the Toxaway
Hotel Company will not this year op
erate the string of famous hotels In the
Sapphire country on which they had a
ten-year lease at 130,000 a year, eight
years of which lease was yet to run.
The Toxaway Company, the owners of
the hotels, will, It is understood, them
selves operate the hotels,

Panama Missionary,
Rev. J. L. Wise, missionary of th*
Southern Baptist convention to Pana
ma. passed through Atlanta Friday
afternoon en route to his hom* In New
Orleans. During his brief stay here
he visited the church headquarters in
the Austell building and chatted with
several of the leading Baptists of the
city. Mr. Wise has been In Panama
over two years, and talked most In

stated that 32,000 men were at work on

Lucian Cocke Promoted.
Word has reached this city of the
promotion of Lucian H. Cocke from
consulting attorney to general attorney
for the Norfolk and Western railway,
with headquarters at Roanoke. Mr.
Cocke Is well-known In Atlanta, having
visited here several times and having
married Mrs. Sarah J. Hagan, of this
city.

Alderman J. Sid Holland will make
the race for council from the Third
ward to succeed Councilman G. L.
Chose wood. Alderman Holland's term
expires at the close of thlB year, and
he has decided to make the race for
council from hts ward. C. P. Bentley Is
also a candidate and there Is talk of J.
. Harrison and W. W. Gaines.

There will probably be no election
for the members of the county police
force. Instead, Chief Turner and his
men will retain their offlees as long
as the present county commissioners
are In office. In fact, they will prac
tleally b* under a civil service sys
tem.
Although there has been no law
passed to this effect. It Is understood
that this policy has been adopted by
the commissioners, and that Chief Tur
ner and his men will remain In office
without the formality of being re-
eltced every year. In other words,
their Jobs are cinched while the pres
ent commissioners are In office and
as long as their present efficient work
continues.

Brunswick. Ga., April (.—The tug
Iris, which has recently bean over
hauled and put In first class condition,
has been sold and sailed yesterday’for
a port In Cuba, where she will be en
gaged In towing. Captain Frank B.
Avery, of Jacksonville, took charge of
the Iris.
Sues for His Fee.
Balt has been filed In the city court
by Judge B. H. Hill against L. E. Fain
for 1160. It Is claimed by Judge Hill
that this amount represents tbo balance
due of a 2200 fee for representing Fain
when he was tried for shooting a negro
In the September riot.

Cedartown, Ga., April 6.—Cedartown
will be host on the 15th and 16th of
May, when the annual meeting of the
North Georgia and Alabama Volunteer
Firemen's Association will be held here.
This association Is composed of the
departments from Cedartown, Rome,
Dalton, Cartcrsvllle, Calhoun and Grlf.
fin, Ga., and Gadsden, Anniston, Pratt
City and Talladega, Ala.
These ten cities will gather at the
annual tournament In Muy to compete
for several hundred dollars In prizes
offered by the Cedartown Fire Depart
ment. There will bo several hundred
volunteer firemen from theso. cities,
besides thousands of visitors In Ce
dartown at this affair, and the cltlsens
of this city, through Its firemen, will
give the visitors a great time. The so
cial feature of the tournament will bo
notable, and tho sponsors und their
maids from the various places will be
elaborately entertained while here.
Cedartown has Just closed tho con
test for queen of tho tournament, In
which Miss Helen Good, the charming
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Good,
wns chosen after a heated and Inter
esting race between several of Cedar-
town’s most popular young ladles. The
neat sum of |(35 was raised for tho
entertainment fund In this queenshlp
contest.
TWO AMERICANS ARE KILLED
IN MEXICO TRAIN WRECK
Vera Crus, Mexico, April (.—fn a
collision between two frolght trains on
the, Mexican railway (Old Vera Cruz),
between the stations of Rlnconada and
Tamarindo, yesterday seven men lost
their lives and traffic was completely
blocked. The dead Include both en
gineers, Americans. The others are
Mexicans.
