IMPORTANT FACTORS IN ROME’S MATERIAL PROGRESS
LANHAM & SONS COMPANY
GREAT DEPARTMENT STORE
Nothing more significantly or con
spicuously stamps Rome's progressive-
nets than her Imposing business houses,
lVlth every old landmark obliterated,
the Hill City takes another step for
ward toward building the commercial,
and the city beautiful.
The transformation scene at the old
Norton corner Is a gratifying town top-
|c, and Mr. J. II. Lanham Is dally con
gratulated upon the handsome building
he has so successfully erected and
equipped. .
There can not be found In the South
a more commodious, convenient or mod
ern store house than the splendid new
home of Lanham & Sons Co., eorner of
Broad street and Fourth avenue. It Is
up to date In every respect, broad, light,
well ventilated as to the building quali
ties, and by way of the stock carried, Is
a model department store, where all
things needful In merchandise can be
purchased reasonably. \
To give some Idea of the size of this
emporium that covers 64x132 feet, there
Is nearly 30,060 square feet of floor
space In three stories and between the
aisle outlined with Iw show cases a
vast Influx of peopl" can easily be
handled.
There are no dark corners, for from
transom windows of Prism glass on the
two ends and one side of the building, a
perfect flood of light radiates and Is re
flected against the spotless steel celling,
even to the I'emotest part of the store.
By night great arc lights cast electric
rays there, whoso whiteness rival the
sunlight In brilliancy.
A point well considered by the care
ful builder In the erection of this spa
cious bulldTng Is, It Is absolutely fire
proof. Indeed, the structure MORIS
than measured up to the exacting re
quirement of the Southern Tariff Asso
ciation.
In modem equipment the store .is par
excellence and every convenience for the
trading public and method to expedite
shopping—which Is sometimes Irksome
—la a part of the admirable equlppage.
An electric elevator In the rear of the
store operates from floor to floor, and
ono of the greatest conveniences of the
age is the pneumatic cash system put
In, with three stations on the first floor,
two on the second floor, and
ohe on the third, steam makes the
building as balmy as spring on crisp
winter days, and electric fans create a
breeze as coo) as autumn zephyrs,
For those who have^ grown weary
with much shopping there is a cozy
rest room above stairs furnished with
rocking chairs and a comfortable
lounge, to which all patrons are wel
come. Meeting another condition of
tired nature, the thirsty can appease
their thirst at the fount, where all sorts
of refreshing drinks flavored and tent
pered Just to the "queen's taste” ore
nicely served; In Its setting the fount
Is a thing of beauty, with a great elec
trolier of pond lilies beaming In the
opaline tints, altogether the finest soda
fountain In the city.
The view on first entering this capa
cious department store Is pleasing and
inviting. Well to the right is a splendid
display of dress fabrics, silks, laces,
organdies, nets, trimmings, embroider
ies, and m^ny charming accessories.
Down the center aisles on either side
are low display cases, showing the
whole gamut ol' notions, shopping bags,
combs, fans, gloves, hose, handker
chiefs. ,
On the extrema left is the haber
dashery, where every notion that,lends
color to gentlemen's dress can be found
In the .latest tones and cub Beyond this
comes well filled shelves of Zeigler
Bros', shoes; complate In stock, for
ladles, misses and children.
The balcony, which commands a
view of the broad lower flbor, Is the
office space, where the head of the firm
can nlcaly sit at his desk and direct the
affairs of the busy house. There are
fifty clerks kept Ss busy os clock »work
serving an exacting public courteously
and promptly. \
The second floor Is a vast millinery
parlor, where on the opening day 356
exquisite pattern hats were easily dis
played In plate glass cases lining the
walls, to say nothing of the ready-to-
wear hats that crowded the different
counters. Forty-three Gage hats were
in stock on opening dayr and none re
mains. Gorgeous flowers, exquisite as It
culled from Nature's gardens, arranged
In a cose with beautiful ribbons, re
flected much credit upon the artistic
taste of the decorator. Fruits, grain
and foliage all llnd favor In this rich
assortment bought with great care to
please a large and discriminating clien
tele. Stylish millinery, courteous and
accommodated salesladies, have united
in making this department of Lanham
& Sons Co. a prime favorite.
On the right front the ready-to-wear
department required much space, as tha
costly lingerie gowns, silk and satin,
tailored voiles and linen gowns in many
shades, aro sufficient and varied enough
to meet the requirements of milady.
These range in price from 313.60 to 340
per suit. Then there are waists galore,
silks, nets, mulls and lawn anywhere
from 31 to 312.60. "Pay your money
and take your choice."
One counter is devoted to fine em
broidery, and as a drawing card Mr.
Lanham during opening days had an
artistic Instructress to give free lessons
In silk embroidery.
Here you purchase your centerpieces,
waists or any desired article stamped —
or If the stamped goods don't meet tha
requirement, the lady in walling ran
stamp any design you select from a lot
of special patterns—then back to the
cosy rest room and Instructions are
given in the method of working the ar
ticle. Now, lent that getting your
money's worth? A beautiful line of
Mexican drawn work at astonishingly
little cost Is found In this stock.
To attend to this department eleven
salesladies are constantly busy, while
fourteen are equally as much occupied
in the work room.
The third floor is given over to hand
some rugs, lace curtains, trunks, etc.
There, too. is the wholesale department
and gents’ furnishings.
Such Is the Interior of the latest
building that quite adorns Broad street.
From the exterior there Is a view that
tempts one within. The display win-
dot^ on either side of the front en
trance appeal to the masculine and
feminine public, for the one Is filled
with things that set the feminine fancy
Wild with longing, while the other die
plays toggery that pleases men.
With the deep concrete pavement
completed around the building. Indeed
and In truth, Lanham & Sons Co.’s cor
ner is a substantial ornament to Broad
street.
The visitors whom Rome so gladly
welcome ire cordially Invited to Inspect
this splendid department store of Lan
ham & Sons Co.
