young women of AtlanU and presented
by amateurs at tbe Grand Friday even
ing, might easily, with a little technical
polish and under experienced stage dl
recti on. prove a success on the profes
sional stage. As presented for the first
time. It waa a distinct success for com'
poser and playwright and for evsry
member of the company.
Mlaa Mary Brent Whiteside and Miss
Nannie B. Stephens, who collaborated
in writing the opera, deserve all the
congratulations they received after tho
first production. The lyrics are espe
cially clever, their music bright and
tuneful and their words more than
usually good. Especially worth noting
were the solos, "When Dreaming." "The
Song of tha Soup," and the nursery
rhyme fantasia, "Little Bo-Peep and
Her Fiddlers Three." .Some clever lines
In the book brought rounds of applause,
especially one epigram, "When a wom
an discourses she talks science, of
which she knows little. When ahe
merely talks, she talks scandal, of
which she knows much.”
While, as In every amateur produo.
tlon, there were a few stage walU and
several moments when the action
dragged, the opera was presented In a
way which leaves no room for criti
cism. A number of singers who bed
gained experience through professional
work were In the coat, ana their confi

Mlaa Lucile Dennis, In the leading
role, charmed her audience by the
warmth and sweetness of her voice and
by her beauty In the costume of Queen
Caprice. Her voice was shown to best
advantage, perhaps. In her "Slumber
lend" song. Miss Hattie Hunter ns
Gabrlelle, gave a pleasing and fln
rendition of an Important role.
Frank Pearson. In the tending coi
role, wee easily the best actor, his lank
professional experience showing Itself
In his work, end In his stage direction
as well. Marl oh Hood, as the Trouba
dour, has a splendid voice end waa
given several opportunities to make the
beat of It. Oil* Nix was very clever In
a light comedy role, and Carfledge
Campbell, as the Inn-keeper, showed n
gift for comedy. Albert Breltenbucher,
as the king, gave a splendid rendition,
though his voice waa not at 1U best rfs a
result of a cold.
Mrs. Lester Fossick, Charles Hoke.
Miss Elisabeth Adair, Miss Ella Dar-
gan, Mrs. Charles Sheldon and Miss
Louise Norman deserve especial men
tlon for their work. The entire 'coni'
pony gave a performance which left lit'
tie tp be desired, and only lack of apace
prevents more extended Individual men
tlon.
The costumes, designed by Mias Lou
ise Ilnrlne, were smonfc ;ho most beau
tiful ever seen In an amateur produc
tion here. The entire production Is well
worth seeing. It will be repeated Sat
urday afurnoon and night.
