The utilities bill bos been adopted by the
Ilcpuhl<?nn8 and likely to go through with
out amendments.
Brarish activity will probably lie cen
tral earnings lu April was responsible for
the late strength.
New York Financial Bureau: The news
on tbe utility bill this morning may cause
some selling of tbe traction stocks. Union
Pacific Is finding support around 164. Amal
gamated la in demand toward 93. Good
buying appeara In Smelting Just around 131.
Atrblnoou held between 94 and 96. Great
Northern preferred la su]
136, and this stock should
covery. 8t Paul aupportea toward 134.
New York Central continues to be sold on
firm spots /or small profits by professionals.
Northern Pacific should be bought whenever
soft. Pennsylvania seems to meet better
buying on soft spots now. It is In aym
patby with New York Central and Reading,
supported now around 111. Southern Pa
cific well bought toward 84. If support la
withdrawn professionals will sell aggres
sively juat below limits named.
Town Topics: Sentiment of the trade Is
•till bearish, and they will be Inclined to
resist further efforta to advance tbe market
In view of tomorrow’a crop report, and the
poor bank statement outlook. We would,
however, take advantage of weak apota to
day to buy the lietter class of stock gen
erally. as the abort Interest la extensive
and the amonut of liquidation hanging over
th'e market Is small euough to be Ignored.
April railroad earnings Indicate record-
breaking business, ana operations generally
are being carried on under much more fa-
forable conditions, so far os weather and
rate# are concerned* so that monthly state
ments coming out should be a continuing
cause of bullish confidence. On all reces
sions we advise buying Atlantic Coast Line,
Louisville and Nashville, Union Pacific,
Northern Pacific, Houthern Pacific, Great
Northern preferred and Smeltera.
Walt for a reaction before buying cotton.
Buy wheat on wott spots.
The New York Commercial: Attempts to
feature some of tbe smaller railroad* have
not met with much success of late. Both
the Chesapeuko and Ohio and tho Norfolk
and Western were taken up. but It waa not
possible to create Interest in them. Union
Pacific occupies the center of the stage
now, and nothing can displace It. It prac
tically has been the market for several
talk on No York Central, those jn
charge of tbo operations In It do not seem
able to put It up. lu fact, whenever It ap
pears firm some one comes along with a
block of It for rale, and this tends to up
set previous arrangements. As the diges
tive capacity of tbe market la not large at
tbe present time anything In the nature of
good selling has a bad effect.
Wall street would .like to know what
form of financing the capital requirements
of the Union Pacific will take, and how
much money will be needed. Thla Informa
tion would relieve many anxious mluda. It
Is a question Whether the stock of thla
company la being put up for tho purpose Of
assisting In the flotation of an Issue of
bonds. That tbe Union Pacific really la In
need of cash, probably from $50,000,000 to
$75,000,000, generally la recognized, and tho
advance In the price of the stock baa served
to restore confidence In the earning power
of the property.
Paris still la greedy for gold, and takes
•11 of the metal from London It can lay
Its hands on. It la the Impression In the
financial district that, sooner or later, it
will be getting gold from here, It being
the Idea of the managers of the Bank or
France to strengthen Its reserves as much
as possible.
The demand for ateel for export pur
poses continues unabated, reaching a new
high record, and the Iron and steel mills
have orders ahead for the remainder of
this year. This does not look like a
let-up lu one Industrial condition, at least
