phenomenon which has eet the tonguei

place In a Pickens county cemetery re
cently.
In 1863, Barslllal Boggs, a young
lieutenant in Hampton's Legion, I
skirmish at Williamsburg, Va., was
killed and his body burled In old Brew-
erton cemetery, near the battlefield.
At his borne In Pickens county, 8. C.,
he left a wife and six children. Twen
ty years since Mrs. Boggs died, as did
also two years afterward two of her
sons. They were burled In the Pickens
cemetery, and a monument erected
over their graves, and on this monu-
msnt, on May 4, a fanner passing the
cemetery noticed the outline of n face
on the monument just above the In
scription bearing the young soldier's
name. He spread news of the phe
nomenon. Within the next few days
It Is said that thousands of people have
visited the little burying ground t<> see
the strange face, which bears a strlk-

on the Improvement of the Chatta
hoochee river between this city nnd
Eufaula will begin June 18 by the river
Improvement fleet of government boats
the engineer. The. continuation of
series of jetties along the river will be
kept up down as far as Eufaula In or
der to give a channel that will afford
sufficient depth for steamers at all
seasons of the year.

Balnbrldge, Ga.. May 18.—All prepar
ations for the entertainment of the
Grand Lodge of Georgia Knights of
Pythias, which meets In convention
here on May 20-32, are complete.
Homes have been secured for all visit
ing knights and their wives. The de
tails of the several pleasure trips for
the knights have been arranged. All
the business houses and a large number
of private residences and the hotels will
be decorated with the K. of P. colors.
On Monday night Mrs. Flork L. Hall,
of Savannnh, state organiser of the
Pythian Sisters, will Install a chapter
here, to be known as Georgia No. 8.
On Tuesday night Jemlah Temple No.
129, Knights of Khorassan, will give a
street parade nnd hold special cere
monies In the hall later.

Columbus, Ga., May 16.—The Mus
cogee county grand Jury has returned
a true bill against W. D. Langston, the
young man who claims hit; home Is In
Atlanta, and that he la the son of a
deceased minister.
A bill was also returned against B.
W. Wilson, ex-agent of tbe Standard
Trust Company, of Birmingham, who
Is charged with larceny after trust.
Eight murder cases are on the crimi
nal docket, whieh wll! be taken up
when the court meets In June.

Newberry. 8. C., May 18.—After re
maining out for twenty hours, th* Jury
In the Wash Hunter case, charged with
the murder of Elbert. Copeland a year
ago, reported to th# court that It was
Impossible for them to reach a verdict,
and a mistrial was ordered.
Mill Employees Get Increase.
Lynchburg, Va., May 18.—The Lynch
burg Cotton Mill Company has an
nounced another Increase In wages for
Its 700 employees of 71-2 per cent, the
raise being effective next Monday. The
company gave a 10 per cent Increase
last August.
