Washington, June IS.—Japaneao Am-

Unless Governor Terrell Interferes,
and lt> Is hardly probablo that he will
do so. Will Johnson will be hanged In
the Fulton county tower Friday.
The prison commission declined to
commute the sentence to life Impris
onment Thursday morning, and the
paper was immediately transmitted to
the governor, who arrived from
Jamestown at S o'clock Thursday
morning.
Shortly aftorwarda Attorney Alex
Stephens consulted with the governor,
and nguln naked a respite for Johnson.
Governor Terrell did not stnta whnt his
action would be, but said that he de
sired to consult with Judge J. S. Tur
ner, chairman of the prison commis
sion, before passing Anally on the csss.
This consultation will bo held Thurs.
day afternoon, after which the govern
or will announce hla decision. The
prison commission has given this esse
close attention, and have secured every
posslblo fact that would bear on the
case.
Mrs. Hembree's final assertion Tues
day that Johnson was unquestionably
her assailant on the flftconth of last
August, probably decided the commis
sion In declining to Interfere.
Tho commission has aiso declined to
commute the sentence of Willie Rogers,
a whlto man who killed his wife In Sa
vannah last year. Rogers will hang on
June 20.
Prepared for Execution.
At the Tower preparations are being
made for the execution of Johnson. A
ropo has been hung from the gallows
In the death chamber on the fifth floor,
next to "Murderers’ Row," and a heavy
ba-e of sand Is suspended to Insure It
against stretching. Sheriff Nelms will
spring the trap between the hours of 10
and 13 o'clock Friday, unless the gov
ernor grants a respite or commutation.
The execution probably will take place
close to 11 o'clock.
The last victim of the gallows In the
Tower was Jim Walker, a negro, who
was hpnged over a year ago for assault
upon a Mrs. Moore, on Peachtree road.
The crime for which Will Johnson will
pay the penalty was closely similar to
Walker's offense.
