A busy day was spent by the tennis
players at the Southern championship
Thursday. In the singles the event was
narrowed down within part of one
match of the seml-flnals. Cowan Rodg
ers met defeat at the hands of Little,
Bates beat Orima and B. M. Grant de
feated Howell. The other semi-flnallst
Is the winner of the Day-Thornton
match, which whs called on account of
darkness.
In the doubles Norton and Cornelius
reached the seml-flnals and met the
winner of the Crawford-Vau Gilder vs.
Howell and C. Smith match, which was
not completed Thursday night. The
Rodgers brothers defeated Scott and
Williams and are finalists.
The Anal round In tne ladles* singles
was played and Miss Minor, of New
Orleans, won, after a bitterly contested
match.
In the mtxed doubles one match was
played. Miss Jackson and B. M. Grant
downed Miss Janvier and William
Grant, 6-2, 6-0.

Arrest Barney Oldfield
Portland, Ore.,. July B.-^-Charged with
obtaining money under false pretenses
by conducting a fake automobile speed
contest, Barney Oldfield, the famous
automobile racer, was placed under ar
rest yesterday. The complaint was
made by a locAl paper, which asserts
that yesterday’s contests In this city
were not legitimate.
Oldfield’s business manager, T. A.
Morse, Is being sought by the police.
In its issue last night, the paper as
serts that Oidfleld and his manager
used the name of a local automobile
club for the purpose of gaining pres
tige without the sanction of the club,
and that tho promoters of the race
meet offered a card of races when they
knew none of the entries listed Intended
to participate. .

At Nelson, Ga.
The M. Kuts team, of The Georgian's
Commercial League, played two games
in Nelson July 4. losing the first, 10 to
0, and winning the second, 1 to 0.
The Nelson team hammered the fa
mous N. Sullivan nil over the lot, and
out of the lot, In the first two Innings.
Although after the first two Innings ,
Sullivan settled down and pitched.mas

wonderful Crelg Day, the Tech star.
