BUYS NEW STREET FL USHER
TO WASH FACE OF A TLANTA;
WILL ARRIVE NEXT MONTH
Washington, Aug. 27.—Statistic*
covering tho cost of operation by the
Southern railway In North Carolina
were supplied today by A. H. Plant,
comptroller for th* Southern, at the
hearing In the North Carolina rate case.
Mr. Plant was formerly auditor for the
company, and the position of comp
troller was created for him. He will
probably be on the stand all of today
and tomorrow.
During the morning cession Mr.
Plant was subjected to a long series
of questions by Captain Thom, of coun
sel for the road. In which he brought
out the fact that the cost of operating
local trains In North Carolina was
much greater than that of through
trains. Mr. Plant gave for example
a stretch of road of 160 miles, which
would be covered by one through train,
but would require three locals, covering
an average distance of 60 mites. "Three
crews would be required In the latter
case, while only one w-ould serve in the
former.
Mr. Plant outlined the method of the
company In aggregating Its earnings
and expenses, explained the manner In
which the entire road Is divided, the
plan followed In recording Its passenger
,nnd freight service, the mileage cover
ed by the Southern generally, whlclrl
ho gave as 7.615 miles, and In Nortt\
Carolina, which he stated to be 1,456
miles.

Colorado Spring*. Colo., Aug. 27.—
The street cleaning system ot Atlanta
Is to be materially Improved during the
next few weeks.
While In Ht. Louis, on hla way to
Colorado Springs to attend the meeting
of the Imperial Palace, Kliorassans,
Chief John Jentxen. of the sanitary de
partment, purchased n snnltary auto
matic Hushing machine, said to be tho
finest apparatus of Its kind ever put In
use. It cost 11,000.
In appearance, the mnchlne Is simi
lar to the presefit street sprinkling
wagons, but It Is operated differently.
The flushing apparatus consists of a
system of valves, arranged at the rear
of the wagon, anil operated by means
of 45 pounds of air pressure. This
pressure forces the water out In fan
shape on each side of the street, u|
entire pavement and throws It Into
the gutters. Under the present street
sprinkling system, the streets are gen
erally left In a muddy, sluelty condi
tion.
The mnchlne Is scheduled to arrive
In Atlanta the flrst week In September.
An expert will be sent to Atlanta from
8t. Louis to get It In good working
condition. This machine Is now- In use
In a number of the larger cities, and
there is also one In Asheville, N. C„
the only one In the South.
Chief Jentzen says the machine will
make the biggest Improvement ever
made In tho Atlanta street cleaning de
partment.
WHAT IT IS
Composition of the Famous Food.
A widespread Interest has been cre
ated among good livers, us tu the com
position of Grape-Nut., the food that
haa become popular and famous the
world over.
It hsa long been known to phy
sicians, chemists and food experts,
that the starchy portion ot entire
wheat and barley flours Is transformed
Into a true end very choice sugar, by
the act of Intestinal digestion In the
human body. This sugar ta identical
with, and Is known as grape-sugar,
and It Is In condition for Immediate
transformation Into blood and th* nec.
essary structure from which the deli
cate nerve centers are built up.
A food expert followed a line of ex
periments until he produced the food
called Grape-Nuts, of which grape-
sugar forms the principal part, and It
Is produced by following Nature's pro
cesses. In a mechanical way. That Is.
heat, moisture, and time are the meth
ods employed and directed by scien
tific facts gained In research.
Grape-Nuts food Is probably entitled
, the claim of being the moot perfect
ly adapted food for hum.ua needs In
existence, t'ertnln It Is that the user's
delight In the flavor and the perfect
action of Intestinal digestion during
the use of Grape-Nuts Is satisfying,
