Boston, Mass., Dec. 20.—Goods val
ued at $100,000, obtained by a gang of
alleged swindlers from Anns nil over
the country, are believed by poatofllco
Inspectors to be stored in various ware
houses throughout the city. . If the al
legations of the Inspectors are correct
the case presents one, of the cleverest
swindles ever practiced upon business
men of the United States.
Six men have been arrested nnd five
of them are out on hall awaiting the
action of the grand Jury on the tech
ideal charge of using the malls for
fraudulent purposes. Their names arn

Printing Company's establishment in
the building owned by Judge George

the Maddox-Rucker Banking Company.

Judge Hlllyer’a building, the former
facing on Alabama, the latter

A negro porter opened the rear door
of tbs barber shop and a great rush of
amoks deluged the shop. The alarm
was given and barbers nnd hnlf-ehaved,
coutlett, collarless and vestless men
rushed nut Into the street and Into the
cold night air.
After considerable trouble, the fire
department managed to get a position
of advantage from which to fight the
flames, and soon the fire was checked.
The damage to. the printing plant will
probably reach $15,000. It Is only part,
ly covered by Insurance.
It was stated Thursday night that
the fire was of Incendiary origin, but
Mr. I.aHtlte stated Friday morning
that he hnd no reason to believe this
to be true, as he knew of no one who
would wish fo burn up the plant.
It was while finishing up the work
on the printing plant that another cen
tral alarm came In, this one from the
Klkln-Watson corner, at Peachtree and
Marietta.
The second lire was not hearty »o
disastrous as the first In the wny of
the destruction of goods, but in the
seednd Jesse Neville, a boy about J5
yearn of age, was severely burned.
The firs originated In that part qf
the basement of the Elkln-Watson
drug store which Is Just beneath the
Majestic Electric Theater. The cross
ing of wires caused the fire.
Young Neville first detected the
smoke from the basement and he went
down Into the basement to ascertain
where the fire was, In trying to pro
vent the Igniting of some alcohol near
the blaze, his hands nnd arms were
burned. Ho was taken' to his home.
Friday 11 was reported that he would
be able to return to work In a few days.
The fire department managed to ex
tinguish the flnmes after a short
struggle. Mont of the damage was suf
fered by the 17. N. Tumlln Cigar Com
pany, whose clgara were stored In this
K art of the basement. The damage
ardly exceeds $400.
A third alarm came In from 53 Au-
burn-ave., where about $200 damage
was suffered by a etvam dyeing nnd
cleaning company.
CARPENTER FALLS
DOWN ELEVATOR
Badly disfigured and In a serious con
dition, J. J. Heavy, a carpenter In the
employ of Donaldson 4k Persons, con
tractors, is lying In Grady hospital as
tht result of falling down an elevator
ehaft Thuraday afternoon. When first
taken to the hospital it was bellefed
he was fatally Injured, but Inquiry at
the hoepltal Friday morning developed
that he was Improving.
The accident occurred In Flfth-et.,
near Peachtree, In an apartment house
In the course of construction. Other
workmen were attracted to the Jxittoin
of the elevator shaft by groans, atpi
found the unfortunate mun unconscious
with the elevator on top of him. No
one saw the accident, end It le believed
Mr. Peavy wae struck white leaning
over the shaft nnd knocked to the bot
tom by the descending elevator. The
Injured man Is a brother of William O.
Peavy. of the firm of Scott & Peavy.

This was a part of I he letter that
came to the Home for the Friendless
Friday morning from a family in Dal
las, Ga. It followed the pictures In last
Tuesday's Georgian, a row of seven
bnbles, with the Invitation:
"How’d You Like to Have a Baby for
Your Christmas Present ?'*
Miss Mitchell, the matron—the little
girl was named for her, by the way-
read the letter, which gave references
showing the excellent standing of the
fumlly In Dallas, and Its ability to pro
vide a real home for the little one. But
she couldn't send the baby to Dallas
Friday, for little Margaret has devel
oped un attack of pneumonia and has
been sent to the children's ward at
Grady Hospital until she Is recovered.
But In a little while. If the baby rounds
out her battle with the disease, she
may be dressed In a new white dress
and sent to Dallas to make a home hap
py and be a Christinas present for al
ways nnd always.

travel.

posed Incendiary fires have occurred
here recently, and much astonishment
was caused yesterday by the discovery
of the firebug, as claimed. In John
Hollmnn, son of a prominent citizen.
Ed Vincent and Herman Quest stated
that Holiman confessed to them that
he burned Ebenexer High Hchool and
the Baptist ahorcb last Sunday night.
Holiman was sent to JaiL

and C. R. James, two prominent citi
zens of Dougherty county, are to face
Judge Emory Speer In the United
Staten court here Monday, In contempt
proceedings.
They are at present under- bonds of

set down (or Monday. The charges
came ont of proceedings In the bank
ruptcy case of Rouse & Williams before
Referee Jones in Albany.
BUZZARD GIVES BATTLE
TO ENGINEER IN CAB.

Valdosta, Ga., Dec. 20.—While his
train on the Georgia Southern and
Florida railroad was rushing along at
a rapid rate on Its way to Palatka, a
buzzard flew Into Engineer McNabb's
cab and hit him squarely In the face.
The bussard. badly frightened, showed
fight, and clawed and bit the engineer’s
face frantically. Engineer McNabb
finally managed to get the buzzard out
of the window. i

neral of Mrs. W. A. Lewis, of Atlnnta,
was held hero yesterday at the Meth
odist church. Mfn. Lewis had a large
number of relatives at her old homo
here, and the funeral was attended by a
number of friends from Atlanta and
eliewhoro. She leaves one son and one
daughter, Dr. B. L. Lewis,\»f-Dublin,
and Mrs. J. H. Phllpnt, of Atlanta.
