Macon, Ga., Dec. 2T.—All previous
records were broken Monday and Tues
day by the Macott postofllce. The
stamp sales on Monday amounted
31,000, and the Increase of tho money
order business over lost year was about
60 per cent. Nearly 3,000 money or
ders were cashed on Monday, and 3,600
on Tuesday. The registry business Is
about double what It was one year
ago. The contractors for the new
postofllco building have promised to
have It In readiness for occupation by
the government by the first of April.
The new poatofnee Is built of white
marble, at n cost of 3460,000. Post
master Harry 8. Edwards Is the reclp-
lent of many congratulations upon the
general Increase of business and the
efilrlefit service rendered the public
during the Christmas holidays.

around a bonfire with a number of his
playmates, young John Hamlin received
a bullet In his leg from a rafle In the
hands of some unknown person. Two
shots were tired. The first bullet miss
ed, but shortly afterwards the Injured
youth fell with a bullet In his leg.

Macon, Go., Dec. 27.—Christmas
Macon was characterized by the best
order that the city has enjoyed In
number of years. Many of the older
citizens have testified that drunkenness
was less frequent than ever before In
tho history of the city so far os they
could remember. The splendid order
Is attributed by some to the Improve
ments In the police department, follow
ing the activity of the new city olll-
data.
SAYS WIFE THREATENED
TO END OWN LIFE,

Macon, Ga., Dec. 27.—John Watts,
husband of the. woman found dead on
the banks of the Ocmulgee Wednesday
morning, Is stilt held In the county jail,
awaiting further developments. Watts
says he feels sure of being exonerated,
and was sorry the authorities would not
allow him to attend his wife's funer
al. Watts stated that his wife hod
frequently threatened suicide. He said
that his wife had attempted to burn
herself a month ago, and that he was
little surprised to learn of her death
Wednesday morning. He says he Is
sure he will be set at liberty when
given a hearing.

doing of William F. Walker, the defaulting
treasurer of the New Britain (Conn.) Sav
ings bank, who Is under arrest at Rnsen-
eda, Mexico, where he Is fighting extradi
tion, Is told by William L. Hose, a detec
tive. He says. In part:
“William F. Walker had already lost
more than $200,000 In speculation In Wall-at.

Leesburg, Ga., Dec. 27.—B. W. Ad-
kinn, an employee of The Lee County
Journal, wan peppered with bird ahot
In front of the home of Deputy Clerk
J. \V. Morgan, a prominent citizen of
thin county. It l« claimed the ehootlng
was the result of a planned elopement
by Adkins and Miss Nona Morgan.
As Adkins drove up In front of the
house, the shot was fired. It was pre
ceded by a warning cry from Miss
Morgan. Tho shot took effect In the
face, neck and shoulders of Adkins. He
returned the fire with a rifle, but his
shots were without effect.
It Is not known who tired tho shot
as It- came from out tho darkness.

gold and silver coin to the amount of half a
million dollars were scattered about the
corner of LaSalle and Adams-sts. for a

A United States Express Company wagon
with a load of specie, guarded by Barney
Terbeck and Henry Kerkes, and driven by
W. II. Sipltb, was struck by a street car.
Terbeck and Kerkes were thrown to the
street and the bags of speclo on ton of
them. Terbeck received a fracture of the
skull and Kerkes was badly bruised by the
henry bags of money falling on him.

Hotel here, valued at 310,000. was com
pletely destroyed by fire yesterday. The
cause of the fire Is unknown. The

REFUSES TO LICENSE
GEORGIA MUTUAL
Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 27.—State Insur
ance Commissioner Folk has refused to re
new the llcenso of the Btate Mutual Life
Insurance Company of Georgia to operate
Tennessee. Mr. Folk, construing the
Tennessee statute, recently held that the
offer of special privilege* to policyholders
as an Inducement for busluesa wn* unfair.
It was alleged that tbo company had
adopted this method In some other states.

lockjaw expert, died of that disease last
night, nfter begging the physicians to end

Several Important changea In the
achedulee of roads entering the union
depot are now being contemplated and
orders to this effect will probably soon
be leaued, the changes to become ef
fective January 6.

Important changea will be made on the
Seaboard Air Line and the Loulerilte

While no official announcement has
yet been made, It la said the night train
for the East over the Seaboard Air
Line, which now leaves at 10 o'clock,
will bo changed to leave at 7:46 o'clock
at night Instead. This change will be
necessitated because of the Inaugura
tion of the Florida limited train on that
rood, of solid Pullman, from New York
to 8t. Augustine. . The change will alio
permit of connection! at Baltimore by
boat for many point. In the vicinity.

Nashville will change the leaving time
of the train to Cincinnati from 4 o’clock

Charlottesville. Va., Dec. 27.—Presi
dent and Mrs. Roosevelt. Kennlt, Ar
chie nnd Quentin Roosevelt, accom
panied by Miss Carewe, sister of Mrs.
Roosevelt and by Surgeon General
Rlxey nnd Joseph Wllmer. arrived late
yesterday afternoon at Pine Knot. The
trip of ten miles was made over roads
almost hub deep In mud In places.
On descending from the train ‘here
the president greeted the crowd at tho
station, saying: "How do you do, gen
tlemen? I am very glad to ho back
here again.”
The bird season has closed, but this
will not work a hardship, for President
Roosevelt has never attempted quail
shooting. The turkey season, however.
Is still on and the president expects to
make a raid on the turkey runs on
Green mountain as soon as he rests u
