J p you will set tlie children to
making Blrnplo little girts
while you arc fashioning fluf
fy, frilly do-dads, all lace and
ribbons, It will not only be the
valunbfe means of keeping
,bem busy, bu. It will Infuse them with
tbe spirit of giving, which we are
nfflty apt to monopolize these days,
forfeiting that in our own generosity
„ e are likely to make the children
■teedy little gift-takers, robbed of tho
rtry essence of the Christmas spirit
Small son will think, first of all of
JiMy. perhaps, to whom he should
Ike to present some small gift, as man
to nun. By winding a stick about
twelve Inches long—the handle of a
email broom would answer nicely—
with red ribbon about three-quarters of
uj | D cb wide, which Is securely tacked
It each end, and finishing It at each
end with bows and a loop to suspend
It by, be can make a necktie rack that
will be a real convenience.
If be Is old enough to whittle, even
erudely, with a little help he'could
male a doll's cradle for sister, from a
oonplc of cigar bores, one with the
cover removed, serving as the cradle,
ttr oilier being used for the rockers,
A clipping case Is easily made with
six Manila envelopes. Through the two
bottom corners of the envelopes holes
must be punched largo enough to pas3
a ribbon through, which Is tied In n
little bow on the upper side. Suspen
sion rings should be attached to tbe
outer envelopes nt tbe top near the
edge, nnd ribbon run through these to
bold tbe envelopes In tbo place.
Book marjes may be made in infinite
vnrlety, with tlje help of postcards
bearing some sort of animal head. Wa
ter color paper, or thin cardboard
should be cut in strips four tnenes long,
rounding Into a bait circle at tbo top
about an Inch and a half In diameter
(smaller, of course, If tbe heads to bo
used are small, because tbe bead must
cover all of this portion) and tapdrlng
down to rounded corners at the bot
tom.
Tho animal’s head cut from tho
postcard Is pasted over tbe top, and a
triangular slit cut Just below It, point
down, so that It will slip over tbe page
of a book easily.
A dozen blotters with a calendar for
each month pasted In tbe corner would
be a very acceptable accessory for the
desk. An eye-glass polisher of chamois
pieces about tbe size of a tumbler bot
tom, pinked about tbe edges with sharp
scissors, and fastened throAgh the cen
ter with a bow of holly ribbon could
be made by the smallest Augers.
Sister will love to make a dainty
sachet of fringed rlbbop, nnd bit of
Dresden ribbon* may be whipped to
gether about the edges by her tiny awk
ward fingers that will delight some
fond aunt, even If the sachet all leaks
out.
Many handy llttlp articles may be
made after a paper pattern of a Christ
mas bell—blotters, the top one of leath
erette, tied at the top with bright rib
bon—match scratchers of sand' paper,
that may be tied with ribbon or laced
about tbe edges with raffia, leaving a
loop at the top to bang the hell up by
and needle books with flannel leaves
nnd silk covers. An older child, may
make a telephone pad by covering a
heavy piece of cardboard with' canvas
or cretonne, allowing enough around
the edges so that tho material may be
turned over for half an Inch and glued
dowm The back sHonld then be covered
with wrapping paper, neatly pasted on,
a pencil attached to the comer by a rib
bon, nnd a ruled sheet or card posted
in the center of the board for the num-

Dressing Up the Christmas Packages
Copyright toll by l J. Robinson.
•pr-TTTf-j-, avf. yon over received a
gift that wan wrapped op In
wrinkled tisane paper,
bit soiled—or even, per
haps, a ragged piece of jet
low wrapping paper—fast-
enoUTwith a pin, or tied once through
the middle with a stringy smltcb of rib
bon and Into a discouraged one-loop
bow? Do yon remember that there
flnsbed Into your mind a vision of tbo
giver, slamming tho gift Into the paper
In a manner that suggested strongly her
thoughts at tbo time? ‘There, thank
goodness, that’s done and out of tbe
way. I simply couldn't get oat of
sending her something, but It’s snch a
nuisance when I’m bo busy with other
more Important things."
If yon have ever received one of these
packages that was simply wrapped up
and cot dressed up, you kDow that tbe
wrappings often proclaim tbe spirit of
the giver far loader than tbo g|ft Itself.
It Is not necessary to smother a pack
age with ribbons and holly and flatter
ing cards, but Immaculate neatness and
tasteful color combinations are possible
to the leanest purse.
Nothing bas quite tbe Cbrlstmasy
look of a trim package done up care^
fully in white tissue paper and tied
wlfh red baby ribbon, wltb a llttlo
spray of holly tucked beneath the In
tersection of the ribbon. Rome prefer
to use wbtte ribbon, with a carnation,
br a bit of mistletoe and boliy com
bined, to add tbe touch of colqr. The
gummed strips such as are used for
framing small picture*, la gold or •oar-
let,'may be used with very attractive
results on a boxed package, little CSirUt-
maa stickers sealing It neatly where the
stripe cross. Gold cord Is very pretty
also, and rafia nsed for tying up certain
arts and crafts articles is most appro
priate. Green tissue paper tn place of
white may be used by way of variety.
Tissue paper napkins in a holly de
sign may be used successfully for small
gifts, or If you do not Insist upon car
rying ont tbe holiday colors some of the
pretty floral designs are very; dainty
and artistic when tied with harmonis
ing ribbon. The g*ft may be placed la
tbo center of tho napkin, and.the four
corners drawn together while the rils
bon Is tied around like a draw string,
and then pulled out like petals.
If one Is sending a tiny gift like a
bit of Jewelry, a clever Idea la to get a
good sized doll’s stocking, and tuck the
llttlo gift In tho very Up of the scar
let toe, filling the rest of It with candles
and laying It in a box on a bed of holly.
Often ono wishes to send money as
a gin, but does not wish It to appear
as though the giving -of It were tbe
easiest way out of a difficulty. Snug
gle a crisp bill In tbe heart of an artl-
fldal rose, and Me your Christmas cart
to the stem of It Or get a little Japa
nese umbrella, tuck the bill beneath tbs
slender ribs and print on the top of It
"Good fur a Itniuy Day.” A lltUe doll
with a gingham dress and floppy sun-
bonnet could wear with grace an apron
consisting of a green-back, or be pro
tected from wlntery blasts by a crack
ling green shawl about her shoulders.
One of the little animals found tilled
with candy In the candy shops would
also be an amusthg repository for a bill.
Oao woman solved tbe problem In s
unique way by suspending bright new
dimes by scarlet ribbons from the
branches of n tittle potted plant The
effect when the wrapping* of scarlet
tlssnc paper fell away from the twink
ling plant was that of a gayly decked
miniature Christmas tree.
If the gift hasn't far to travel It may
be secret ed In a scooped-out orange, the
top of which Is replaced, and held In
place by encircling ribbons of green. Or
Imagine the surprise of opening a box
lA which, on a mica sprinkled bed of
cotton rested a huge potato neatly tied
around and around with holly ribbon I
When tho ribbon Is removed tbe potato
falls open In two parts that have boor
hollowed ont as much as possible, nnd
In the moist little compartment ta dls
closed a tiny buttonhole boquet quite ai
fresh as when It was placed tn the od<
little nest.
