organization of ils kind In America
An urgent Invitation was sent Thurs
day to the body, which Is In session In
Washington', by the Atlanta Chamber
of Commerce, at the Instance of repre
sentatives of a number of scientific
societies of-the city who met at the
University club.
Hut one other city has made a formal
hid for tills convention—Toronto—and
It Is believed that the claims of the
Canadian city will be sidetracked 111
favor of Atlanta, an many members of
the association have expressed their de
sire to hold a convention In the South
land. The association met six years
ago In New Orleans, and the treatment
accorded them while there has made
those who attended that meeting
anxious to return to Dixie.
The meeting at the University club
Thursday wo* attended by members of
the Chamber of Commerce and repre
sentatives from the Georgia School of
Technology, and many local sclentlflc
organizations.
Immediately after the meeting Sec
retary Cooper, of the Chamber of Com

POSTOFFICE BOX RENTS
GO UP WITH PROSPERITY
The announcement by the postoffice
department that private box rents at
the local postofTIce would be raised at
the flrat of the year has caused much
adverse comment In Atlanta. Evident
ly believing that the scheme to advance
the rates had originated here, Post
master McKee has received many let
ters fioin Atlantans upbraiding hint for
raising the rates and accusing him of
taking advantage of a monopoly.
If these writers would refer to the
book of regulations, published by the
postofllee department at Washington,
they would see that the local postolflce
authorities have absolutely no Jurisdic

lower rates, which Atlantans have en

the annual receipts at the local office,
which were then between 31.000,000 and
33.000,009. As this year the receipts
will be neuier 98,000,009, the box rent
rates will be raised accordingly, as per
official regulations.
