Nashville, Tenn., June 8.- Suit waa
Instituted before the trustees of Grun
dy county today by Rtate Revenue
Agent James R. Jetton to reaseess
property of the Tennessee Coal, Iron
and Railroad Company, ln this state,
for 1902, 1904, 1906 and 1906. Accord
ing to the contention of the state, this
company Is liable for tax assemment
for the yeara mentioned at not less
than $10,060,000 per annum, no part of

Under the Tennessee laws the method
of arriving at the value of the prop-

lvalue which should be assessed for tax
ation. It Is claimed by the state that
since 1994 the average assessment upon
the Intangible property of the corpor
ation has not been over $27,000 per
annum, whereas the company, prior to
January 1. had a capitalisation of over
$22,000,000 and. outstanding bonds of
more than $16,000,000. Flnce January
l the capital stock has been $30,000,-
000. This stock Is quoted In New York
at 166.
Should the stnte establish Ha conten
tion that $10,000,000 of property has
annually escaped taxation, the corpora
tion will be liable for nearly $600,000
In Interest, taxes, penalty and costs.
