coast, stood on a corner In this sun-baked
t-aaelMlI erased town and lookod ui»on any
thing but a refreshing sight. In the dls-
turn** came the sound of rolling drums and
"Con's" stalwart figure turned to the up-
preaching rumble and au ample bnuuer,
(tearing the foregone legend, greeted hla
eyes. Ami then be saw a negro drum corps,
marching to the martial music aod carrying
the lianner aloft, approaching nearer, pans
him and swing onward up the street. He
turned on hla heel and walked away.
Just what i(trutliera thought on the Im

but with a true ring of sportsmanship, he
laughed at the Incident later, when sw

of tlie Virginia league, who apparently saw
pictures of their finish In the smoke,
“Con" succeeded In unloading any of bis

He plans to dump hla unprofitable IJms

the lianner of resentment with disfavor,
who hope chat he will be successful.

The New Orleans Tliues-democrat says;
"Birmingham and Atlanta continue to
talk about New Orleans having lost out nn
the first team In the Houtbern League.
Various hints are made that Atlanta and
Birmingham could easily drop New Or
leans and Shreveport out of the league and
be better off. When the dropping subject
comes up, n Southwestern league, with
Galveston, Houston, Dallas and Fort
Worth taking the places of Atlanta, Bir

would prove something of a blow to the
blowers. Atlanta would soon find herself
In the South Atlantic league, with Bir

they have a habit of supporting a losing

CAPITOL AVENUE 11,
WESLEY MEMORIAL 10
Th, South,m lawn tonnl, champion
ship, given by the Southern Lawn Ten
nis Association and played on the
courta of tha Atlanta Athletic Club at
East Lake, began Tuesday afternoon.
With the pick of the tennis player,
of lha South and a liberal sprinkling
of Northern.ra and Westerners, th,
flr.t real championship ever h.ld In
Atlanta has begun.
Players poured In on all trains Tues
day morning and the club house of tho
Atlanta Athletic Club was a busy spot
throughout the morning hours.
At noon the work of arranging the
entries and drawing for opponents In
the singlet and doubles was done by
the tennis commute* of the club.
As soon as the drawings were finish
ed the contestant, made a quick run
for lunch and they started for East
Lake In the early cars.
The entries In singles numbered 94
and In doubles there were 21 pairs.
The roll call of the various delega
tion, showed mady disappointing ab
sences. The Augusta delegation waa
notably light and two star players for
Nashville did not arrive with the Ten
nessee team. Taken all In all, however,
the class of the entries was the highest
ever known In a Southern champion
ship and tho matches promise to be
unusually hard fought and well played.
Day began Tuesday afternoon, at
I o'clock and will continue until night
fall. It wilt ba resumed again on

throughout the country relative to the sum
mer baseball rule. There has lieen eon-
atiemhle agitation among the colleges over
allowing college hall player* to participate
lu aeml-profcsalonal games during the
summer notion. The colleges hold that
once a man srrspts msoey for his serv

a professional, and It no longer eligible
for college athletics. Regardless of thin.
It Is n well-known fact that college base-

Cornell, In s spasm of broad-mindedness,
proposed that It would be lietter to openly
allow the baseball players to play during
